STARTER CORP. FILES FOR CHAPTER 11 BANKRUPTCY TOUGH SPORTS LICENSING BUSINESS BLAMED FOR FIRM'S DEMISE.

NEW YORK -- Starter Corp., succumbing to a brutal sports licensing market, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware listed assets of $118.1 million and liabilities of $120.5 million.
Among the 20 largest unsecured creditors were: NBA Properties, $1.8 million; Major League Baseball Properties, $1.6 million; NFL Properties, $1.2 million; and NHL Enterprises, $903,000. Other creditors included Fox Broadcasting, Player's Inc., Madison Square Garden, Vibe magazine and Olympia Entertainment.
The New Haven, Conn.-based activewear maker said it had been unable to find new equity investors or to renegotiate its $160 million credit line with BankBoston and Citibank.
