Totally eliminating sugar from your diet. Or, at least, eliminated all added sugar from your diet. Is this possible? Has anyone ever tried this? If so, how did you do it and how did you feel while doing it?

completely? tried it and failed miserably - easily the hardest addiction to totally beat for me as that shit is virtually everywhere...was able to keep my refined consumption a lot lower due to being conscious of everything tho

YES!!

It's called a "Ketogenic Diet". I cut out all sugars AND carbs. The body goes into, whats called, ketogenesis. This means the body begins using your body fat stores for energy and fuel. The fat comes off QUICK!

I made a thread on it a while ago.

I did, but I'm too addicted to powdered Iced Tea mix. That and Welch's fruit snacks are my weaknesses.

After going without any(added) sugar for a week, I ate some fruit snacks and felt bliss unlike any other.

I tried it, but fell off the wagon hard! I made it about 3 weeks... I had headaches for the first few days, but after that I was fine, I just gave in to the cravings.

Gotta have your mind right to try that.

Doesn't this affect your brain and cognitive skills though?

tried and failed twice. @ this point im cool w/ moderation.

notice how this thread looks like a damn online narcotics anonymous meeting.

sugar, nicotine, alcohol are prolly harder to kick than a coke habit... and prolly do more damage to the body too.

I'd say it depends on the person. I felt slightly sharper after my body began to uptake fats for fuel, instead of sugars and carbs. But I did experience some slight short term weakness during the transition as well.

It does, it's makes you feel a hell of a lot more smarter, aware, and alive!

I do keto 5 days a week then have 2 cheat days.

If you don't mentally prepare yourself for it, you will fail quickly.

This sounds similar to the anabolic diet, where you consume high fat/protein and very low carbs during the week and load on the carbs heavily during the weekend. How is this working out for you?

I'm on day 5 a high protein,no carb or sugar diet...

Not really hungry, but feeling crappy...might go take a donut hostage.

easy for me to do once i became a vegan.

eliminated many sweets (ice cream, pies, cakes, cookies, etc.).

i only add sucanat (dried brown sugar cane juice) to my oatmeal whenever i prepare it.

You got discipline, sugar's worse than crack.

I always hated sweets for most of my life so i spent at least 25 to 30 years with no sugar other than the occasional piece of fruit. Then I got this adrenal gland condition, got super scrawny(size zero) and all of a sudden had massive craving for cake, pie, ice cream, things I never ate. That was for a year and change and now my body naturally adjusted back to its usual ways; no sweets or sweet drinks. Is really not so hard living sugar free at all its easy.

Great! I lost 11.5lbs the first month. First 2 weeks were very tough tho. My muscles were very sore as if I was an old man. Even standing up was really hard at times. I was told I wasn't getting enough magnesium. Also I was super on edge, the smallest thing would make me flip the fuck out like I was roid raging.

Weightlifting wise, I did medium to high reps with low to medium weights. After 2 weeks I was back to power lifting.

I stopped eating successfully for 4 months staight.its been 8 months now and I still rarely eat sugar. I noticed that my immune system was really weak and I was close to getting pneumonia last year. I was catching everything that came along and with every cold i caught I was sick for over 2 weeks.

I stopped drinking soda completely years ago. Friend's wife got a job as a dental hygenist and told me that soda is the worst possible thing you can put in your mouth so I stopped completely. But I was a candy bar and snack cake junky. With the job I had at the time I was coming across a lot of vending machines, but the vending machine was the first thing I promised myself I would quit, so I would empty my pockets the night before and no longer carried dollars or change. I didnt quit cold turkey, but I started by eliminating snack cakes as they are the bigger threat because of the hydrogenated oil they contain.

There are 50 different names for sugar when you look at the nutrition labels on the back of products. I quit eating as many as applied to what I ate every day, including fruit. Here is a list.

50 Names for Sugar

Day 1.. Sucked....everything was fine until after dinner when I usually have something sweet.

Day 3... Motivation kept me moving past the point that im starting to fiend a little for something sweet. Anger is starting to set in at this point. DO yourself a favor and let people know what youre doing. Itll save your friendships because you WILL yell at people

Week 2... Anger is intense. It was my first realization of how a junkie or alcoholic must feel. I WANNNNNNNNNNNNTTTT IT!!!!.. The same receptors in the brain effected when doing through sugar widthdrawals are the same as the receptors for cocaine withdrawals. You ARE a drug addict in rehab at this point. DOnt take this statement lightly.

Week 3... Anger begins to boil over and becomes uncontrollable. I became short tempered with everyone around... Treated every little thing that happened like it was the end of the world. Personal items with sacrificed during a daily rage. But dont do anything stupid like put a hole through your flatscreen or throw the XBOX at the dog.

1 month... Started calming down...Anger levels began to recede.

2 months.. Started noticing positive changes... Anger under control, nerves settled. Not only did I sleepthough the night, I woke up in the morning with so much energy that Id literally pop out of bed like  ready to get my day started. Clear thoughts. Most people dont know what this means.. but once it happens you will notice the difference. Everything just seems more relaxed and its easy to think about something without your mind drifting or feeling rushed to do everything.

4 months... i succeeded in what I set out to do. I went though the entire winter around sick people and germy ass kids yetmstayed healthy the entire 4 months. I got sick for about a day but recovered quickly. Sugar turns your immune system off.

My first taste of sugar was a shock to the system. FOr the first time in my life I could take a bite of something sweet and be satisfied with just one bite or was so overwhelmed that I didnt want to continue. After dinner, I can literally have a 1/8 of a teaspoon of raw honey and be done.

Tips on sticking to it...

Really take the time to understand why sugar is so bad and the many problems and diseases it is responsible for. Everyone is aware of the relationship between diabetes and sugar, but did you know Heart attacks have more to do with sugar and hydrogenated oils found in cookies and cakes, than saturated fat from red meat? Sugar is also the primary fuel for the cancer of mutation cells. So think about that chemotherapy offices that has the diet soda and bowls of candy

Give up watching regular and cable tv. Ive been watching netflix and hulu for 6 years now. Recently watched a lot of cable when i moved and found it hard to stick to my diet. All the commercials are for stuff that is horrible for you to eat and it all contains sugar. Once youve broken that sugar habit, its easier to see how much programming your TV set is actually doing to you.

Dont overload on fruit. Fruit is the junkfood of the health world. Vegetables are for maintaining your daily body, fruit should only be eaten sparingly. ORanges dont contain nearly as much vitamin C as a red pepper or spinach.

Throughout your adventure of giving up sugar, you must study. We are taught health in school, but we are not taught good nutrition in school. You need a good understanding of WHY you are doing this so that your goals are strong and clear. If you dont build up your mind you will fail in less than a week. But if you can do it, the benefits are easy to see what you have actually been feeling like shit for all these years and its like a whole new person. You taste bud take a few months to change. There are a lot of things you might not like right now in terms of vegetables and stuff, that you might find yourself liking with your new appetite. I went from eating all junk to eating nothing but meat and vegetables in a matter of 4 months.

Word of warning..When you try to go back to eating junk food, your body lets you know really quick that thats not happening.

Ive lost 45 lbs this year. And that wasnt the hardest thing to do. The hardest thing to do was cutting sugar out of my diet. I found out that cutting out sugar will make you cheat on your diet faster than any thing. Shit is a lot harder than I thought.

I lost 45 lbs the past year as well but was due to illness and was MUCH too much, I only needed to lose 10. I have managed to gain back 14 by eating lots of cake and ice cream and stuff I never usually have and even with that has been a struggle.
