Any Plex users here ?

Im thinking about starting a 4k library again , i did this last year but then deleted them
ill just get my favorite movies in 4k , and not let friends see this folder in plex
4k movies 4-6GB in size
ill still keep the 1080p for everyone
after making this post i went on a 4k download spree, i now have 195 4k movies in plex ,
all of them are under 5gb except for a few like avatar and interstellar, my 4k folder size is at 650GB
im not a big baller shot caller like xplosive and big tex with 50gb files
sinners in 4k is 3GB and looks great to my old eyes , so im going to keep getting the movies i like in small 4k
im still keeping the 1080p x265 files for the remote streamers to my servers for now

There’s an encode group people really like “QxR” that upload 1080p 5-10GB
and 4k 15-25GB

To the 60gb 4k downloaders I’m curious if we do a blind test will you be able to tell the difference between a 20gb 4k and a 60gb 4k

I saw on the news Comcast is doing away with data caps
Yeah they are bleeding customers with more fiber rolling out at cheaper prices so they are losing their monopoly. I couldn't WAIT to ditch them when ATT rolled that fiber to my block. And I'd been with them almost 30yrs. Service had gotten crappy, bill went up every year, and the data cap was the last straw.

I can tell the difference on my 120" projector screen, but I find the biggest improvement is actually the audio rather than the picture quality.

Me too bra. I bought one of these last year

Its gonna take a min to get 6 24tb Hard drives.
Just to let everyone know this is on sale on Walmart website for $122 I just bought it
Thanks

If you plan to get a das or Nas enclosure, don’t make the mistake I did And get a 2 bay
Get 5/6/8 bay from the start

How I plan to use this bay das for plex

2 bays
2 18tb drives just for movies
One will back up the other
I think my total movie folder is 11tb right now

2 bays
2 8tb drives just for tv shows
Again one drive will backup the other
My total tv show folder is 3tb right now
I don’t have the 8tb drives right now
I will wait for Black Friday deals

Last 5th bay I will use for macOS Time Machine back ups to a 1tb 2.5 SSD I use for that

And I will do the media backups with a program I have called carbon copy cloner
It does the back up every night at what ever time I set it to

What did yall do with the dvd burned copies from the early 2000s , if you did that , I had probably up to 100 disc I had burned on my computer over the years ,used either converxtodvd or dvdshrink

Some years ago I just threw them out in the trash , I wasn’t gonna watch no dvd quality movie nowadays or even use disc for movies

So here's a mistake I made

The power board to one of my WD My Book external hard drives failed, I shucked it and put it in my computer, assuming it would work and the files would be there but the hard drive is in RAW format due to encryption.

I have another WD My Book 8TB for my Plex content. I need to get a new hard drive and enclosure as soon as possible because if this WD My Book fails, I'll be stuck with an encrypted drive that I can't recover the content from.

Get a das or nas enclosure

Saw this plex setup on reddit

To the people that have 4k movies and share their movies
Do you keep the 4k in the same library or separate library for 4k and don’t share this ?

Let me reiterate this warning!

WD MyBook External hard drives have encryption on them and if the power board that powers the hard drive fails and you shuck the drive and place it in another enclosure or computer, you will NOT be able to access the material on the drive.

Your WD MyBooks are essentially ticking time bombs. I know why encryption is ,necessary but I will not be purchasing those drives in the future.

If it's just movies encryption isn't really necessary, that's just more overhead.

I don't share anything above 1080p. Only 4K in the home on local network

I'm trying to figure out how to remove it because if the powerboard fails and I have to shuck it, I lose the data.

The previous hard drive and porn and roms, while I'm fine parting with the porn, having to re-download my roms and isos has been a bitch because of Cox's data caps.

I think you can use the powerboard from another mybook and power up the HD. Might be better off just buying another mybook and use it as backup.

Somebody on reddit said that was a bit of a gamble because of some sort of numeric code.

I bought a WD 8TB and placed it in an enclosure and backed up my Plex server just to be safe.

When my finances allow it, I'll look into a NAS.

I bought 2 8tb wd drives used from eBay Internal drives
So far I’m 4-0 with used drives no problems
I like buying 5400 rpm because there less noise and wd has never failed me

I finally installed Plex on my Android box and I love it.
Plex has been around so long and it has a lot of bloatware you don’t need
Luckily you can turn this off

On the web browser go to app.plex.tv
Go to settings /online media sources
And disable

“movies & shows”
This is plex own movies with ads or movies and shows you have to pay to watch , if you disable this you won’t even seen it in the Home Screen

I keep live tv enabled because I don’t have cable and sometimes is useful for live news or watching old shows
They have a 24/7 hour channel forensic files channel that I like and Americas most wanted or unsolved mysteries I think is called

Thanks, I'll do that.

Yup, happend to my boy with his editing, drive died, he removed it put it in another enclosure, everything is encrypted. I ended up switching to a synology drive because of it, unfortunately, I got a 2 bay......

Are you dead set on a nas ?
A 4 bay nas will run you over $500

You can buy a cheap mini computer from beelink $150 or if you already have one just use that and leave it on 24/7
A 4 bay DAS enclosure you can get for under $150

That’s cheaper than $500+ Nas

Both will do the same

Is just having 2 things on das+pc
Instead of one NAS

if you install tautilli on your computer with plex , this is more for people who share their movies with others

you can have tautilli ios/android/macos dont know if windows has notifications , you can have tautilli send you notifications for many different things from remote users ,
playback errors
watched
playback start
buffering problem
server down
remote access down

theres like 20 different things you can have the app send trigger notifications , you can pick which ever option you want for different devices phone /tablet / computer

i know plex shows you when someone is streaming live when is happening , tautillu goes into more detail , ip address / location direct play or transcode , also a history of what has been played plus many other things , the app is free
i been using this third party app with plex for a long time , when it had a different name "PlexPy" over 6 years ago

example from github
68747470733a2f2f74617574756c6c692e636f6d2f696d616765732f73637265656e73686f74732f61637469766974792d636f6d707265737365642e6a70673f763d32

I never had any problems with Plex but all my movies are small 720p 800mb yify type files

the only time I have problems is with huge 4k files like over 40gb
for that I use another app called “infuse“ on Apple TV , it connects to my Plex server

currently have 5,674 movies

2 movie folders 3.77TB and another with 700gb
Went from 3TB of movies in 2020 to 10TB in 2025
