Important 2025 Plex Updates

Upcoming Plex Pass Price Increase

The good news is that you can still purchase a Lifetime Plex Pass subscription at the current price of $119.99 USD* before the increase goes into effect on April 29, 2025.

New USD prices as of April 29, 2025 will be:
 Monthly: $6.99
 Yearly: $69.99
 Lifetime: $249.99

Upcoming Change to Remote Playback for Personal Media

We are also changing how remote playback works for streaming personal media (that is, playback when not on the same local network as the server). The reality is that we need more resources to continue putting forth the best personal media experience, and as a result, we will no longer offer remote playback as a free feature. This—alongside the new Plex Pass pricing—will help provide those resources. This change will apply to the future release of our new Plex experience for mobile and other platforms.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR CURRENT PLEX PASS HOLDERS:
For users who have an active Plex Pass subscription, remote playback will continue to be available to you without interruption from any Plex Media Server, after these changes go into effect. When running your own Plex Media Server as a subscriber, other users to whom you have granted access can also stream from the server (whether local or remote), without ANY additional charge—not even a mobile activation fee. More on that later in this update.

Beginning on April 29, 2025, users will be able to stream from personal media libraries on a remote network in one of two ways:

Option 1: Remote playback with a Plex Pass

Upgrading to any Plex Pass subscription is a great option for server owners, as it ensures all users accessing the Plex Media Server can stream remotely, without an additional charge. Even if you don’t run your own Plex Media Server, a Plex Pass subscription will not only allow you to stream remotely from any server to which you have access, but also lets you make use of other Plex Pass functionality like Skip Intro and Skip Credits.

Option 2: Remote playback with a Remote Watch Pass subscription (New!)

Our brand-new subscription offering, Remote Watch Pass, allows individual users to remotely stream media from any personal media server to which they have access. This is a great option for users who don’t run their own server and are looking to stream from a server belonging to a friend or family member who does not have a Plex Pass. It’s also a good alternative for server owners who may not need the full feature offering of a Plex Pass, but are looking for a more cost-effective option to access their media remotely. Beginning April 29, 2025, Remote Watch Pass will be available for an introductory price of $1.99/month or $19.99/year.

For more on how Remote Watch Pass works, skip to the FAQs below, where we break it down in detail.

Life-Time Price is crazy. I'll wait until they have a holiday sale.

If you wait till after April 29 , the people you share your movies with remotely, will have to pay $20 a year to remote play to your server
I just saw that. I'm glad I got mine out the way. This wont apply to Plex Pass will it?

I’ve had the best luck with western digital drives

Me too bra. I bought one of these last year

Can you hear the fan going on that one or is it quiet ?

What made you pick that one over the others

I got cloud storage because I was always afraid that them External HDD would crash any moment that I'll lose everything that I've saved on there.

I've heard people liking western digital but it's a hit or miss because you can lose everything you put on there after investing in one of those HDD.
Thats why you buy 2 when buying a drive
Back up , back up

I made sure to buy 2 18tb drives at the same time
I don’t do raid , I do a software backup every day automatically
Copies the new files to the second drive

Im thinking about starting a 4k library again , i did this last year but then deleted them
ill just get my favorite movies in 4k , and not let friends see this folder in plex
4k movies 4-6GB in size
ill still keep the 1080p for everyone

My UHD Bluraay rips are like 60-80GB each

I'm fucking with this Jellyfin as we speak and while the playback is very nice, the setup is much more advanced than Plex.

This is advance level shit and will turn off the flithy, stinking casuals.
I used Jellyfin for a long while then switched to Emby. They are related, Jellyfin is the open source fork of Emby. Both work well if you know what you're doing.

Damn, your Plex server probably needs box fans and shit
lol, my server doesn't transcode so it doesn't need much power at all. It;'s just serving up files to my clients. I only use it to serve my movies for myself so all my clients can play back the full uncompressed rips.

Same here bruh.
Cats think I'm crazy getting these big-ass rips but I got a 120" projector screen, 4K Epson projector, and 11.2 speaker setup in my theater I gotta feed, lol.

I’ve been using plex since 2009, but just started playing around with jellyfin as a backup in case Plex does some fuck shit in the future. Im not a fan of all the extra shit they’ve been adding over the last few years. Like Marshawn said “you know why Im here”

Jellyfin definitely has that open source feel… hella options, not as streamlined. Im in so deep with plex, I can’t give an honest evaluation but for someone who doesn’t want to pay for plex pass and isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty it’s the best option. I use Apple TVs, and the iOS player is shit, but if you buy infuse and connect to jellyfin you’re good to go.

Emby is a good middle ground. They have a paid pass and more built in configs. And players for just about every platform. But you don't have to check in with their servers, so there are no privacy concerns.

Do you wait for the actual 4k disc to come out and download that

Or for example sinners 2025 , web-dl is out
But the 4k source is like 25gb
Do you download that or wait ?

What about you @Big Tex ?

How many TB total do you have for movies ?
I have a 6-drive NAS with 36TB storage for movies and other files.

I usually wait for the UHD 4K copy to drop unless it's a movie I really want to see then I might get the first decent copy to drop.

Depends. I wait for the 4k disc to come out. If it's something I really like, I buy the disc and rip it at home.
