Any good books for a young black man?

Op says his son is 13 and y'all posting books adults read. One responder talking about his freshmen year in college wtf nigga did you read what he posted ? Lil man at 13 needs to be reading the books his Reading and English teacher list for his reports. Then after that go let him select at book at like Barnes and Noble that is in the area for his age group. You guys are getting to deep with stuff. The kid is already struggling with puberty now y'all want to mess with his mind on some deep thinker type reading. Hell it's grown adults who can't handle those books.

Not my son; just a kid I mentor. This thread went downhill real quick, though.:smh: But I got some good suggestions out of it.

And I am not being funny or trying to belittle you or nothing. Everything else is useless.

Well shit while we at it....

My mom would have me write definitions out of it everyday when I was little and although my spelling is poor (thanks spell check!) my reading comprehension and ability to communicate and understand ideas is built on the foundation of knowing the proper definition of words and how they are suppose to be used.

*two cents*

lol @ some of the Replies..

when I was that age...the books I read that had the biggest impact on me were: "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" ,"Black Pride" and "Rich Dad, Poor Dad'

"The Contender", " Durango St" "Makes me wanna holler" also had a profound effect on me, but the first 2 may be a little dated -- I was born in the 80's but fascinated with the 60's and 70's so the vocabulary was familiar to me.

for kids who aren't avid readers I also usually recommend "How to hustle to win"....it has a lot of hip hop references, and gives info in doses that are easily digestible to this short attention spanned generation...however it would be for older kids ---16 and up.
