Any good books for a young black man?

Any recommendations for good books for a kid who just turned 13? I am considering Makes Me Wanna Holler by Nathan McCall, but think that may be too adult, with the running trains and gang activity depicted in the book. Black Boy, Native Son, and the Autobiography of Malcolm X may be too political. So, I am just looking for something that would hold his interest and he could relate to. He's really into sports and is a Lebron James fan as well, so something like that may work.

What about those Dr. Ben Carson Bio's...?

Then there is THE PACT, about the 3 doctors who made it out of THE HOOD....

Uncle tom cabin... And explain how the term used in slang has nothing to do with the character

My kid is about the same age. I find that at his age, he's more interested in fiction than non-fiction, unless the book is about someone he already knows, so I'll stick to mostly fiction recommendations. My kid has read a few books by Paul Langan including The Bully, (book list)
and one or two by Walter Dean Meyers who wrote scorpions and Monster . (site)

They both, for the most part, write what I would refer to as "Urban fiction"- kids dealing with the realities of inner city life and rising above it. The protagonists are young black men or women.

Be advised; there is, in an attempt to be true to life, an abundance of "hood" language and improper speech- and plenty of "hood" ignorance...

He's also read a book called "Lebron's Dream Team" which mostly covers Lebron's middle-school /high-school team.

Also, though not a black series, there is a series of sports based young adult fiction; by Author Mike Lupica (link)

I would also recommend "Yo, Little brother- Basic rules of survival for young African-American males" by Anthony Davis (link (amazon)) and a book that just came out this year called Black Boy/White School by Brian F. Walker (though this one might be a little mature for a 13 year old)

Link (amazon)

These are a few specifically black books, but I encourage mine to have an eclectic taste in literature (or what passes for it these days...) so I have a ton of recommendations that aren't black if you're at all interested.

Those might work.

I don't think this would hold his attention.

All praises to Allah for the Honorable Elijah Muhammad who teaches us that the white man is the devil.

:dance::dance::dance:

I don't know if you're serious or a character. If you're serious, there are definitely some aspects of the NOI's ideology that black kids need to hear (self-love, self-reliance, knowledge of self and black history), but some of the books you posted can easily be regarded as an indoctrination into race hatred.

I am a very serious student of the Holy and Humble the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. I am serious and young black men need this knowledge of self and how to deal with this white devil.

C'mon Bruh, he said nothing too political and you pull all this out of your pocket?

This isn't political, this is the troof from the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. Every young black man needs to know that this white man is the devil, how to eat to live, and how to survive the fall of america.

Some of you niggas on bgol need to be reading the books of Elijah.

This white devil has already laid down the indoctrination for racial hatred for 450 years. This devil is the original teacher of hate for the black man. He taught the black man how to hate himself. He lied about jesus being white. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad teaches us how to know ourselves and why we shouldn't eat purk.

You are a follower of a cult demon.

I would prefer if they simply read...

Alright... lets just say what your leader says is the truth... that tamahu are devils... which we shouldn't care about because they will do as they have always done...

And for this to be said, all manipulations which he held his hand in should also be reviewed...

but why would I listen to THAT man? and I say this with no offense, but your religion holds as much animosity and evil towards my people as his does... those in your religion, murdered, raped, enslaved, manipulated, and also delved into racism.. even though those with a cross represent the death of the cross... yours fared any better to Africans or having manipulated our people for the same?

but again, this is on the subject of the young man and a request for less political material to read... white devil and religious materials are as political as they come

Kogalee is right.

In fact virtually every history class in our american educational system and the media teaches young black people that whites are superior and nonwhites are inferior.

Knowledge of self is important. Knowledge of our real history is also important.

This is not a book but make sure he watches this.

Gifted Hands and The Pact were books I had to read for a class my freshmen year at a mostly white college. Both were very good and make you want to do something with your life. Both books were so good I actually kept both books til this day and have read each of them again.

Also I know a lot of people say this guy is a coon but Tavis Smiley's, "What I know for sure", which came out in 2005 or 06 is a very inspirational book. It teaches you to work hard and even when times are tough, if you keep striving forward things will get better. I'm not a Tavis fan but I did not realize that when he went to college all he had was 50 dollars in his pocket and a small suitcase. And when he first came to Los Angeles he burned bridges in the political scene and was forced to sell tshirts at the Rose Bowl and work at Arby's just to put a roof over his head. Also, if the 13 eyar old is interested in fraternity life, he gives some interesting opinions on fraternities and his own fraternity. Very good book.

-And I have not read this one, but I hear,"The Other Wes Moore", is a good book. It's very recent, its about two guys from the same projects who were both named Wes Moore. One went on to be a Rhodes Scholar and a decorated Army paratrooper and either a captain or Lt in the Army. The other had a life fulled with crime and ended up going to prison. The book talks about how even though they both came from the same background and same upbringing, the small choices that each of them made, made the biggest impacts in their lives.

At his age he needs to just be reading age approriate materials. Once he cultivates his own mind then turn him on to books for Brothers.

Kind of sounds like Parallel Time by Brent Staples.

Exactly. I should have been more clear about this from the beginning.

that's why I threw up the list that I did.

If the kid isn't already an avid reader, at that age- you can't just give him a bunch of non-fiction and expect him to stay interested in it. One of the biggest mistakes I've made as a parent is to think my kid will (or even should ) like the same shit I do, or expect him to be into something just because I deem it important he know it. A lot of the books people are posting are worthy reads, but will just seem like another boring school textbook to him at his age.

He has to develop a love of the medium, and I.M.O, age appropriate fiction (or non fiction that coincides with his interests- like the sports you mentioned) is the way to do that.

Autobiography of Malcolm X is a great book for any black man...every black man/woman should read it...

Miseducation Of A Negro - Woodson

Brainwashed - Burrell

Black Boy - Wright

The main is white, thus a racist/white supremacist suspect! Lets not get it twisted!
