Android Is Destroying Everyone, Especially RIM -- iPhone Dead In Water

I have an HTC Incredible. My next phone will be the iPhone 5. And not because I'm a "fanboy", I need a phone that is a phone FIRST, everything else second. While Android is cool the developers treated the call features as an after thought. Android powers phones are Mobile devices first, phones second.

Now if you don't want an iPhone you'll be fine with any of the HTC Android phones with the Sense UI.

Thanks, JD. Yeah ... gonna be keeping my eyes/ears open as 2011 progresses. I've been with Bell since mid-2004, and Canadian plans/rates are alot worse than the States. We get gouged up here - so I've always just stuck with regular phones over the years for work/fam'/emergencies. Got a handful of friends with Iphone 3 and Iphone 4s ... but their data plans are outrageous. I'm gonna leverage with them cats @ Bell when I upgrade next January and work my Corporate PCS, 30% discount, free features and keep grandfathering my contract along with those bitches if at all possible :D:lol: - the best thing about the location I deal with at a mall 15 mins away is that they've got a shitload of providers all within walking distance of one another. So I just go in there - tell them what I want / show them my plan / tell them to kill that bullshit and half-assed offers & make me an offer I can't refuse, as the movie saying goes. Show them my invoice/specs over at TELUS / FIDO / ROGERS / SOLO / KOODO MOBILE / WIRELESS WAVE, and I need to check out the new cat on the block now (Mobilicity) and see what they're fucking with, etc (all within 45 mins to an hour).

And I wouldn't knock you if you stuck with a standard phone. A lot of these apps are becoming too invasive on privacy. Hell, the new Google Map update has a feature that will allow friends to track you via GPS. Not cool. Especially if you fuck around and accidently turn it on.

who is "we?"

do you own apple stock or are you one of those folks who stand in-line every 6 - 8 months so that everything can change again?

We as in the industry.

Any new market goes through several periods of growth before it settles down.

Obscurity (the winCE, Psion, Palm years) These are the early adopters
The breakout Hit (the original iPhone)
Knockoffs enter the market
Real competitors enter the market
Price drops to 'enter the mainstream' (the growth period)
Price incentives to pump up a quarter's earnings (the cliff) These are the late adopters
Consolidation period.

The growth period is where the industry is at right now. Once things get to a level where everyone has one, and there's no big reason to upgrade then market share will matter, but that still wont mean that the 20 or so Android makers out here now won't be down to 5 when it's finished.

In the end it's going to be like the PC market. Good sales, but little to no profit margins.

The iPhone is a phone first  Where did you get that shit from

Its name perhaps.

I've never ever ever heard the iPhone described as a great phone by anyone up here. They always talk about it's apps, how easy to use it is...blah blah. I've never heard anyone say how clear the voices are on their iPhone.

Apple Zealots Still Going Insane At News That Android--ANDROID!--Has Blown Past iPhone In Market Share

angry-crowd.jpg

Our post observing that Android just blew past Apple in US market share now has 325 comments and counting.

Why?

Because Apple fans are apoplectic at the idea that Android--ANDROID!--could be leaving their beloved phone platform in the dust.

Never mind that Apple, at least, is hanging on to its 25% market share. It's RIM that is getting crushed.

As we noted the other day, amid the enraged insults and fingerpointing and howling, there are a few good points as to why the market share figures don't tell the whole story.

First and foremost, as we observed, Android is not a standardized platform: Its various flavors and releases and customizations have created a fragmented market of many different Androids, each of which has a share that is far smaller than the iPhone's. Google is now trying to exert more control over Android. But, for now, the platform is very fragmented.

Second, Apple is maintaining price parity with Android, which is something the company did not do when it was fighting a ubiquitous software platform in the 1990s (Microsoft). Importantly, though, this price parity has not stopped Android's share from soaring, so Apple may have to get even more aggressive on price.

Third, Apple is indeed still flogging Android in the tablet market: The Motorola Xoom has reportedly sold all of 100,000 units, compared to millions for the iPad 2. (That said, tablets and phones are different, and the fact that the iPad runs iOS does not mean that iPads and iPhones should both be counted in handset market share).

One argument that was raised in Apple's defense has since been debunked: The argument that, if you count iPod touches in your market share calculation, Apple is still in great shape.

Our Dan Frommer ran the numbers. At least globally, if you include iPod touches, Apple's platform share has actually fallen year over year.

(Admit it, Apple fans: That's bad and startling news. A year ago, Apple had this whole market to itself).

In any event, we never cease to be amazed by the effectiveness of Steve Jobs' famous "reality distortion field." If you don't like the news, Apple zealots all apparently agree, just shoot the messengers.

Best deal hands down metro pcs lg imprint $40 a month unlimited calling and texting iPad 3G $25 a month total $65 a month no contracts no taxes no bullshit. If I get sick of the phone which I find no reason to I can just buy another one I've been using their service for 6 months not one dropped call yet those other contract phones it's a waste of money. Fuck that over $100 bill a month shit and for those who say well my bill is under $100 your limited on your calling plans or texting plan. Sprint and EVO are no better I know mad people who pay over $100 to rock that phone and another $100 a month replacing the wack battery usage fuck all these big name cell companies I'm tired of forking over $2400 every 2 years locked in contracts. I rather keep the extra money in my pocket

This.

Im doing this when my.contract is up.

These high power smartphones aren't worth the money. A basic blackberry and a tablet is better and less money. Even bargain Sprint is 69+10+taxes and fees now, that almost 100 right there.

Thanks, bro. Yeah - over the years I've been good with the standard phones and have found my usage has even gone down as my work schedule and day-to-day is more routine, compared to 2004 - 2007 where it was quite erratic and too much shit was on the go with various organizations, running around & post-college life and shit. One of the things I was comfortable with a couple of years back when I was upgrading my plan was going around to the various other providers (per my previous reply) and showing them my specs/invoice and asking them what they thought, and that I would switch to them IF they could sweeten the deal and offer me better/more. Most of them flat-out told the truth and said - "Nah man, just stick with what you have ... you've got a good deal/plan there ... I can't top that." So that was reassuring moving forward knowing I was fairly comfortable with my provider in Bell. Lots of incentives/perks to switch over to other phone companies ... but it would feel like starting over from scratch after already having brand/company loyalty at that point of 5 + years ongoing (as of 2009).

Apple iOS Platform Outreaches Android by 59 Percent in U.S. When Accounting for Mobile Phones, Tablets and Other Connected Media Devices
comScore Releases First Public Data on Apple iPad Users from MobiLens Service

RESTON, VA, April 19, 2011 – comScore, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCOR), a leader in measuring the digital world, today released the results of a U.S. study of Apple iPad owners, based on data from the comScore MobiLens service. The report includes comScore’s first publicly available data showing demographics and other characteristics of users of connected media devices, such as the iPad and iPod Touch. Initial research indicates that Apple’s iOS platform, which resides on iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches, has a combined platform reach of 37.9 million among all mobile phones, tablets and other such connected media devices, outreaching the Android platform by 59 percent.

“comScore is excited to announce the availability of connected device data as part of the comScore MobiLens service,” said Mark Donovan, comScore senior vice president of mobile. “This new data set enables us to not only understand the comprehensive ecosystem of mobile and connected media device users, but it also allows us insight into their detailed demographic and behavioral attributes.”

iPad and other connected media device data are also currently available in Europe. comScore will publicly release European data in the coming days.

Apple iOS Has Twice the Reach of Android

comScore’s analysis of the unduplicated audience reach of the Apple iOS platform across iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches revealed a combined iOS installed base of 37.9 million users. The installed base of iPhones slightly exceeded that of iPod Touches, both of which were approximately twice as high as the number of iPads. Interestingly, among the 37.9 million consumers with access to the Apple iOS, only 4 million (10.5 percent) accessed the platform via more than one device. The combined 37.9 million iOS users is 59 percent greater than the 23.8 million combined Android OS installed base, which includes users of both Android phones and connected media devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

“These data clearly illustrate the Apple ecosystem extends far beyond the iPhone,” added Donovan. “Though it’s frequently assumed that the Apple user base is composed of dedicated Apple ‘fanboys’, there’s not a tremendous amount of overlapping mobile device access among these users. This of course has significant implications for the developer community as they consider the market potential in developing applications for different mobile platforms.”

Apple iPad Ownership Extends Beyond Just “Fanboys”

The research also suggests that iPad ownership extends well beyond Apple’s most fervent consumers. Although a perception may exist that iPad owners tend to be those with a very strong affinity for Apple products, an analysis of the mobile devices of iPad owners indicates that may not be the case. While Apple is indeed the most heavily represented OEM among iPad owners, its OEM share (27.3 percent) is only slightly higher than its share among all smartphone subscribers (25.2 percent). RIM accounts for the second highest percentage of iPad owners at 17.5 percent, but this number is well below its overall smartphone market share of 28.9 percent. Meanwhile, Samsung, LG and Nokia are all significantly overrepresented among iPad owners as compared to their respective shares of the smartphone market. In addition, 14.2 percent of iPad users had Android phones.

Apple iPad Ownership Skews to 25-34 Year Olds

The age profile of iPad users indicated the heaviest skew toward 25-34 year olds (27.0 percent) in relation to the total mobile audience (17.6 percent). iPads also exhibited significantly above average skews in the 18-24 year old and 35-44 year old segments. However, this demographic profile was similar to that of the overall smartphone user base, indicating that the advanced mobile capabilities rather than the device itself might be primary driver behind this age profile.

Fuck an iPhone and i-everything-else for that matter. Apple is too dictatorial about how their products are used for my taste. When I buy a piece of hardware, I'm going to do whatever the fuck I please with it. Speaking of which, I'm about to flash my Droid 2 with a stock and unlocked Beta ROM of Gingerbread 2.3.3 and both Apple and Verizon can eat a bag of dicks.

So when talking about Windows phones, do they count all the netbooks, desktops and laptops running Windows?

That shit is is dumb as hell :smh:

They only do that bullshit with Apple.

Essentially what they're saying is the iPad is a big ass touch, which is a iPhone without the phone

The carriers are about to put all that rooting shit on lock.

Do you know the difference between mobile OS (Android, iOS, Windows Phone 7) and a regular OS (OS X, Windows 7, Linux)? If you did, you wouldn't ask such a dumb question.

when talking about market share you can choose to only count phones or you can count all devices that run a particular OS. comScore did both and niggas are mad about it?

Because if you count phones you'll lose out

That's why in another year, when they're 20 different types of Android tablets, you dudes will start crying again

True. If you just count smartphones Android OS has a greater market share. If you just count tablets iOS has the greater market share. If you just count mp3 players iOS has the greater market share. If you just count TV devices like Apple TV and Google TV, Apple has the greater market sharr If you count them all, iOS has the greater market share.

Because if you count phones you'll lose out

That's why in another year, when they're 20 different types of Android tablets, you dudes will start crying again

There are already 20 different Android tablets.

I do find it quite funny how the same people who were saying that Android was winning because of all the devices, phone and tablet wise, are now crying foul when someone counted iOS devices in a similar way. On the other hand however, it's sad how these same people are basically advocating one choice to rule the market. Don't give me the 'Open Source' jive because until someone forks it ultimately only one group is in charge of it's fate. Having a slightly different UI between companies is not the true spirit of openness.
