Amir Khan: I Know I Can Outbox, Hurt Lamont Peterson

Amir Khan is promising fireworks when he puts his WBA and IBF light-welterweight titles on the line against Lamont Peterson on Saturday night.

Eighteen of Khan's 26 professional victories have come by way of knockout and if the Englishman is to be believed, fans can expect another one in Washington.

Khan (26-1) told Sky Sports News: "The viewers at home know they are going to get fireworks. They know when Amir Khan fights it is going to be explosive, there's always that explosive style there.

"They are going to be on the edge of their sofas and the fans that are going to be here will be on the edge of their seats. It is going to be a great performance from me. I am sharp, I am ready, I am in the best condition I can ever be in."

Khan's trainer Freddie Roach certainly believes his man is as well prepared as he has ever been for the fight against a dangerous opponent. And with hugely lucractive contests against the likes of Floyd Mayweather or Tim Bradley being mooted, Khan cannot afford an off-night.

Roach said: "There will be no slip-ups. He is in great shape. He has trained really hard. We have had great sparring for this fight and he is just 100 per cent ready for this fight."

But Peterson (29-1-1) is as unfazed by the glitzy build-up to fight night as he is by the prospect of facing Khan, believing his boxing skills can cause an upset.

He told Sky Sports News: ""I am just doing something I have been doing for 17 years. It is no problem, I do this every day. Just because there is a few cameras in my face or bright lights on, it's still the same thing.

"I am totally confident. I know I'll win. I know I can out-box him and I know I can hurt him, so we'll see what happens when we get in there and see how that pans out."

I love Khans confidence..hahahaha. He has been lookin hella sharp in his past fights and I think he'll continue against Lamont. I know this isnt really saying much but Khan is the ONLY fighter that I have personally seen that looked hella good against Paulie Malinagi (or however you spell that). Any fight Paulie is in is as boring as snail sex. I know that means absolutely nothing but I just had to throw that out there. hahaha

 nah, Paulie got destroyed when McGirt was his trainer, but I can't even remember who he was fighting.

 that if you got a motherfucker who already has a good attribute why not build around it. He can dance... let him dance.

The funniest thing is that if you ask Paulie where he feels he ranks amongst the greats he would easily say Top 3. Hahahaha. Its funny how he feel he is just that good. What he got? Like 4 KO's in like 40 fights..hahaha. Again, I didnt check stats, Im just throwing numbers out there but I know its close.

I guess thats why I would always respect Glen Johnson. I cant remember exactly what fight it was but the post fight interviewer said something like "Do you feel like you are the best in this weight division?" and his response was "No, im not the best. Im just willing to fight the best". Classic.

He either said that against Jones or the first Tarver fight...dude was at his highest point then...

Khan may be in for a struggle here, but I say he pulls it off...too much on the line for him to mess up

GREAT quote from right after he KO'd Roy.

I was like  when he won...but still...

Who knows how the fight would have turned out if the ref didn't take those points off for Khan. Either way, Peterson followed a great plan and showed good heart out there...

What's even better is that this could de-rail Khan's plan to join the 147 ranks and we get a rematch out of this fight

Timmy is laughing his ass of at everyone that clowned him for not fighting Khan. Timmy can fight Lamont, khan can figure if it is him that should retire, and the rest of the boxing experts can go cry in the car.

We might get a good trilogy out of this. Peterson fought a beautiful fight. If Khan is the real deal, he will become better because of this. I saw a lot of Khan's problems in his fight with Judah, but he has made some improvements... it's just Peterson wasn't going away. That motherfucker is tough and gave Khan the fight of his life even without the ref and bullshit pushing calls. Khan still should have lost though.

To me there is nothing worse than when a referee (in any sport) tries to make himself a part of the outcome. In a title fight the Ref should almost be part of the furniture unless there are blatant fouls happening in the ring. Those bullshit point deductions cost Khan that fight. That ref should have his license pulled after that...go back to doin fights at the local bars with Billy the Redneck or Pookie the Bum-Killer.

Hold on, hold on. Am I the only one that saw Khan pushing every 2 seconds through the entire fight? Dude was warned MULTIPLE times before points were deducted. Both points were justified, Khan has no one to blame but himself. I was at work watching the British stream and they had no problem with it either.

Khan can still move up to 147. In fact, both guys should. Peterson weighed 155 lbs. Both guys would be strong at welter and the rematch would help revitalize the division.

Glad to have a new name on the board. Welcome.

Now that that's out of the way

You're crazy as hell.:D

How often does a guy break the rules, blatantly, before the ref is supposed to take a point? He warned him continually from the first round for pushing and holding Peterson's head down. If he does nothing, he's rewarding the offender.

People who picked Khan and boosted him as the "next big star" seem determined to stir this "home cooking" story (Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Yahoo! Sports) and it's not true. Cooper's an experienced ref and he let them fight but Khan insisted on holding Peterson's head down, front facelocks, and blatant pushing, with his elbows and often with both hands. The second penalty he held his head down and pushed off with two hands.
Barry Hunter was incredible in getting across the seriousness and closeness of the fight even snapping Lamont's head back before the 12th.

Yeah, I agree to a point, but motherfuckers push in boxing all the damn time. If refs make that shit a serious issue like that then the sport would look crazy. Let that shit slide for the most part especially in the last round of the fight...:smh:

Peterson still did enough to get win either way in my book, but it was close enough that a tie would have made sense without the pushing calls and I would not be too upset if Khan had won a split decision with in a point without the pushing calls, but this is the best result because we can get a rematch instead of a motherfucker running from it after a close fight.

The judge that Khan winning by 3 rounds...:smh::confused::smh:

Now taking a point or two for holding makes more sense to me. Khan was putting dude in a headlock and looking at the ref, but the ref looked back like  'wtf you want me to do, let go and fight'.

Hunter did a great job and Peterson fought the fight he needed to fight.

He did let is slide, he let is slide for 7 rds and even after getting one point taken from him, Khan was still pushing. I thought the headholding was even more egregious and I thought that's what the second deduction was going to be for but he got it for another pushoff.

The best thing to happen was a Peterson win. If this had been a Khan victory by a decision, there would be no rematch. No way Roach lets Khan back in the ring with Peterson if he had won.
Let them fight again at 147 and we are guaranteed one great fight for 2012.

He was killing me putting Peterson in a headlock and then looking at the ref like he was supposed to dock Peterson for putting his head in his arm.
His Merchant interview was telling. He was clearly feeling Peterson's pressure and it had him flustered.

This was no hometown decision. Peterson was the aggressor throughout and landed the blows that were making Khan back up and take a breath after evey exchange. Much props to Lamont, he definitely proved me wrong.

Now onto Khan - DUDE! YOU ARE NOT MANNY PACQUIAO - QUIT THE IMITATION ALREADY. Khan actually has some skills, he needs to quit emulating his boy - who fights like that naturally. Khan needs a technical trainer because Freddie ain't correcting his sloppy combo punching ass. I mean at times he looked like a complete fucking amateur in there.

Yeah didn't know what do when a guy just wants to be all in your face and throw those hands.... and he can move just as fast as you so you can't get a way. He needs to stop trying to copy Pacs movements. If he had stood tall with a snappy jab when Peterson was trying to move in, he would have had more success, but Pac's style isn't good backing up or being defensive. I did see improvements on Khan's end, but he was believing his own hype too much and thought if he does one thing over and over again that it would work...:smh:.

I don't know what Roach is teaching these guys, but I would switch trainers.

Yep. At times, he was throwing combos when there was nothing to hit. What guy who wants to be a legit top guy does that over and over again when it's not working? He had some effect going to the body but didn't do it enough while Peterson was banging away on his.

 I damn near typed the same thing. So I guess I have to cosign.
