I just finished watching it. I put off watching it because I just didn't feel like being in the emotional state that these kinds of movies put me in.
Just like in real life...just like MY real life, I had to sit back and watch justice fail to be served.
This is the story that we live with every day.
I'm sorely disappointed with the high road approach that so many film makers take with subjects like this.
Anyone who has ever lost someone close to this type of violence understands the rage that is carried inside throughout life. It seemed like he was going to tackle that but instead, as Dtown said, he only took it halfway and veered into the standard "good people on both sides" stance and let that dominate the story.
That perspective has been told over and over and not tackling the real feelings of the victims is disingenuous. Its a cop-out from taking a risk in telling a story that may be difficult for some of the audience to process.
I think he was the wrong person to tell this type of story.
It damn sure wasn't for us. Maybe they can play it as a class movie viewing or something, but anything I choose to watch of his in the future will be watched with a side eye, if at all.
I do not want to hear the same old subjugated negro perspective spewed again.
This dude's storytelling career with me suffered the same fate as his character in the movie.
Can't trust him to be honest, so fuck his work.
I wouldn't recommend this movie to any young black man.
This is an indoctrination piece to a slave nigga mindset. End message - damned if you do, damned if you try.
We all know from life experience that change does not come free and is not given; its taken.
They always want us to be forgiving and understanding. Where has that gotten us? Right at the bottom where they feel safe. Niggas who tell stories like this are the ones helping keep us there.
Fuck this movie.
Oh, and the critic in me could shit on a lot of storytelling aspects, like the unrealistic amount of time allotted to a hostage situation, the lack of a breach attempt, the lack of intel gathering attempt, the failure to dismantle cameras inside the precinct, the fact that the crew seemed to be filming at times and not at others even though their whole purpose was to document, lack of acknowledgment of streaming to a viewing audience, slow-paced second act, not enough exposition on the events after the shooting, and so on and so forth. Even if I let all of that go, the worst part is leaving the movie disappointed at the cliché ending that I saw coming from the start of the movie. That is almost inexcusable and passes are only given to movies that do that because the ride you go on is enjoyable or at least fulfilling. This was not the case. Shane Paul McGhee is an actor waiting on an Oscar-worthy role. I see it. Its coming. Theo "Shades" Rossi did well, too.
