Amazing statement I heard from Obama...

In that 60 minutes interview, Obama said that after the bailouts, his advisers came to him and told him to slow down his agenda. The fear was that with so much money having been committed on TARP and other bailouts, the public would not be ready for something so profound as the overhaul of health care. Obama said even though he knew there would be political cost (lost House and Senate seats), he still pushed for the overhaul of the US health care system. Furthermore, he said he wanted Republican support so badly that he proposed pretty much the same health care proposal that Republicans such as Bob Dole had proposed previously.

His interviewer asked him an important question: "[are] you naive?"

______________________________________________________________

Here is why this is shocking. Obama thought his own interests were so important that he was willing to sacrifice Democrats in the Senate and the House. How can you take positions that deplete your own party's majority in the Congress? You might say the end was more important than the means? Really, if you seek ends that eventually deprive you of the means, ie, lose the House, how is that a positive thing? With super majorities in the Senate, and a huge majority in the House, why would you need to put together legislation intended to please the other side, at the cost deflating your own side? This explains all the other stuff he did, such middle of the road justices, sending troops to Afghanistan and appointing a Republican as Secretary of Defense....

Obama will see how deeply Republicans hate him, and I am not sure he understands the amount of anger felt against him by Democrats at the what transpired. The movement to dislodge the Republicans from power began without him, with people like Howard Dean. He benefitted from it, and then gave it away by reckless policies that gutted his party's majority in Congress.

I have never heard of a more arrogant politician than this....

Obama believe it was important to do Health care right now. You won't know until several years from now if it was a good idea or the wrong idea. But honestly this would happen with any major long term overhaul. Americans don't have that much patience, they usually always want things done in the short term. When things are done in their long term interest this is how the usually react.

And he was willing to gut the Democratic Congressional majorities for it?

Sometimes sacrifices have to be made, that's just politics. But another one of his problems was not putting in the public options and all the other backroom deals he did to get it done. But things can always be added in the future, hopefully!

you don't use it, then what good is it? Obama knows his time is limited in that bitch, better to be known for making a change and making history than to sit there and be a status quo CIC. I for one applaud him for his courage and conviction.

For once, you can tell your grandkids that in your lifetime you had a President with a spine.

If he had a spine, he would forced the public option and drug reimportation through. Those two provisions by themselves would have made the repeal of the measure impossible, and would have garnered the support of Democrats...

If he had a spine, he would not have put centrist judges on the court. If anything, he has proved to be dangerous and spineless... and I feel a backlash against him coming from the Democrats. The Progressives already hated him going into the elections, and I do not expect them to give him anything.

I think that he is getting the message.

After indicating earlier on, that he might be willing to allow tax cuts to continue, there was a significant change in his tone a day later when he said he did not see how the country could borrow $700 billion to pay for a millionares tax cut. Perhaps Nancy Pelosi called and told him to forget any Democratic help in his capitulation to the GOP...

I know since he did this Health care thing folks with insurance prices have started to rise to pay for this. My girl is a teacher and 300 bucks comes out each check now. It used to be 90 ish bucks.

Either Obama is incredibily smart or incredibily stupid, I will go with incredibily smart.... The fact he was willing to take that position at the detrement of the party is interesting given the fact that the result was the majority of the blue dogs who lost their seats, the same fags that wasnt with obama on shit to begin with.... If obama took that position to get them out and give the repigs control of the house in the short term that shit is,fuckin genius.

Obama now can put the blame squarely on the house majority... because the repigs are now think they are the controlling party with is laughable at best

Your a fuckin lair, if your girl is a teacher how is she payimg for her health insurance when her employer covers that. Fuck out of here even with catholic school teachers their bennies is covered, not 100% but its covered.

Try again nigga

HMOs are just raising prices and blaming the bill.

anyway Obamas bill sucked w/o the public option, wasn't worth passing.

He should have gone for a way bigger stimulus. he put like half tax cuts in the stimulus to make the republicans feel good but they voted against it anyway.

how about this if he could rewind, stop kissing the damn repigs asses. and STOP APOLOGIZING SO FUCKING MUCH. I swear this dude apologizes more than Reuben Studdard :smh:

It wasn't arrogance as much as a sense of urgency. While the Dems never had 60 seats in the Senate as falsely advertised, he knew they would not have a majority as large in the Senate and House as he had then so if he wanted to make that move, he had to do it then.
A lot of the seats lost were "Blue Dogs" who voted against him anyway so this really didn't make a difference in their fates.

He did get some Republican votes for the stimulus but he wouldn't have gotten those and many of the conservative Democratic votes with a larger bill.

The Employer doesnt "cover it"...it comes out of the check.

You must not be paying atttention to the way Republicans are playing their side and the way Democrats are playing their. While Kagan might more more to the center, Sotomayor is not and should be a strong liberal vote for her term. But choosing judges with even stronger liberal voting records would have ended up with either them not being confirmed or the confirmation being dragged out and used as a distraction, both unacceptable outcomes.

But the Healthcare law does not take force until 2014..

100% correct, as usual. I heard one of the progressives saying the stimulus should have been 1.4 trillion...

The electoral map requires there to be conservative Democrats in order for there to be a Democratic majority. These are the only people who could have won in conservative districts. What the Democrats lacked was discipline. If Rahm Emmanuel had been in the House, he probably would have forced the Blue Dogs to support the Public Option. That is why the Republicans hate and feared him. But perhaps that is why Obama removed him from the House so that he could get his kind of bills through an irresolute House Democratic caucus. As for the US Senate, Harry Reid had 60 senators, and Olympia Snowe showed a willingness to negotiate with the Democrats... Unfortunately Reid showed cowardice...and let Lieberman run his life.

No he didn't. He had 58 Democrats and 2 Independents (Bernie Sanders and Joe Lieberman). Sanders caucuses with the Democrats and is a liberal but Lieberman is treacherous as hell and even supported McCain in the last election. That cat hadn't been right since Al Gore and he lost the 2000 election.
Take into account conservative Dems like Blanche Lincoln and Ben Nelson and the count goes to 56. Kent Conrad and Mary Landrieu also needed strong coercing to get support. Snowe was definitely the most likely to work with Dems but she is still a strong Republican and she voted with her party far more times than she didn't, making her totally unreliable.
You know I agree that Reid is as soft as wet toilet paper but there was more to it than that.

Obama told our asses some of his choices won't be popular. Tarp was actually started by Bush. Clinton told him is was now or never on Healthcare and not to make the same mistake he made by being so unwilling to bend that the bill fails.

Sometimes you have to break a few eggs to make a cake. The House had to be lost. He knew he would pay just didn't know by how much. Quit nitpicking every little move he makes. He's smarter than we think. Let the shit play out and I'm betting we will all be like:

Something ain't right here homie. The bill makes the insurance companies explain increases and were the money goes. If her shit tripled your girl should have made some calls. Insurance companies make billions of dollars each year. They could pay for it, cut prices, and still make a grip. I'm not sure either one of you understand the bill or why your shit rose.

What would be the point of having a majority if you don't do shit with it? Then the Left would be bitching that he wasted an opportunity.

He ain't paying attention to none of that shit. Zinger's just cutting and pasting shit, adding a comment or two to make himself look knowledgeable.

Exactly! You beat me to it. Plus Dems are so weak that even though they had the majority, they didn't vote like it. Those Dems sacrificed themselves by trying to lean to the middle. The Dems wouldn't have lost the independent vote if they would have came through on all the campaign promises. (ie single payer, more gay rights, troops out of Iraq) By not going hard on Obamas agenda they even lost some of their base. Alot of Dems didn't go to the booths because they figured why bother. Last but not least, the right let it be known that their only agenda was to block Obamas and make it look like he didn't get nothing done. So his response was to get it done "by any means necessary".

Losing the House pretty much seals the fate of the Democrats. This makes it impossible for them to pass legislation to counteract the Citizens United decision that opened the flood gates of corporate money that buried the Democrats in this election. My dear friend, corporation just just gained franchise, and everyone is fucked... The Democrats are in trouble, unless they too start competing for corporate money...

The Dems are notoriously weak willed, and lack a killer instinct. Also, it seems like he was being used by the Indies to an extent. They jumped on his bandwagon thinking that they were going to ride him to getting EVERYTHING that they wanted accomplished, and when it didn't happen, they abandoned him.

All this negative talk about obaman and the things he is trying to do and no one spotlights the fact republicans hate him? WHY? I don't expect them to embrace him but the flat out hate him and don't hide the fact they do. You can say what you want, the policies he is pushing is aimed at uplifting the middle class and poor and rich white folk and lost black folk don't like it.

You will NOT be able to build a majority by electing only progressives. The electoral map is not built that way. You will have to get conservative Democrats, just as the GOP has moderate Republicans like Olympia Snow. What was lacking in the last House was a strong Democratic enforcer, like Rahm Emmanuel. If he had been in power, he would have beaten the Blue Dogs into line. Furthermore, the House did pass everything Obama wanted, and so to say that the Blue Dogs were useless is wrong. The problem is that Obama secretly struck a deal with Insurance companies to do away with Public Option, and with Phamarceutical to bar importation of Drugs from Canada... This is why the Progressives consider him the devil...
