Adam Silver: The pay TV system is broken, the NBA has to do more to attract younger viewers

what is it? I know Curry made the nba not fun. I like the old school drive to the basket style. All that 3 shooting sucks to me. NBA ain’t been like able since Bron was in Miami and Kobe in LA.
Nba is predictable... Same teams pretty much was guaranteed to be in the finals... They only highlighted a few players... Nba went from a 30 team game into let's only talk about 5 teams... I don't want to be specific cause this will go 10+ pages if I did.. But when you only highlight certain players and people only are invested in those players what happens when they fall off, retire, or get injured?.. The NBA did it to itself...burn bitch burn... It's the NBA not only a few people story... Nba tried to cater to a demographic of not loyal fan base and forgot about the real fans of the game...it turned the real fans off and now that demographic that isn't loyal is leaving so now you left with nothing

Folks have a million reasons now not to sit down and watch a 48 minute basketball game; phones, social media; just hard to keep folks attention when you’ve got 30+ teams spread out across the USA playing 7 nights a week.

Having the best teams and players in the west hasn’t helped over the past five years IMO; I’m on Eastern time and while I enjoyed GS at their peak, a 10p or 10:30p tip-off meant the game was over at 1a and I had to be up at 5a so I watched maybe a quarter before I checked out for the night. Geographic parity of the talent might help.

No need to watch every game when you could go on a 10 game losing streak then turn it around and make the playoffs. I don't pay attention until the end and mostly the same teams make it to the playoffs every year. Same reason I don't pay much attention to baseball at first.
The only problem in terms of viewership is the amount of games period. The NFL has high ratings because of 2 things, gambling and the amount of games. That's it. All the NBA has to do is cut the amount of games if they want ratings high. Its not really difficult to see or fix.....

Get Zion on the floor. League needs a spark like Vinsanity in Toronto. Back in the day, we use to have a lot of dunkers that people tuned in to watch. Niccas aint trying to watch someone shoot 3's all damn day and to go like 5-18 from the 3 point line. Dunk contest use to be one of the most anticipated events in all of sports. They use to have like 12 dunkers. Now its like 4 or 6 and like 2 rounds. Get rid of all that other fluff ass BS and bring back the old school All-Star break.

Load management contributes to the decline. If the person getting paid to play the game doesn't feel the game is important enough to play; then why will I feel its important enough to watch.
:dunno:
No it doesnt; load management has nothing to do with nothing; If the NBA season was only 60 games the ratings would go up; If the NBA season was only 50 games the ratings would go up more; Now Imagine an NBA season where there is only 30 games; Only 30 games played; One couldnt get a ticket because they were be a huge waiting list and tickets would be thru the roof; and everyone would watch each game; Gambling would go crazy for NBA games; its only the amount of games that keep viewership, from a ratings perspective, down.......

Yall wanted a league of 3 point shooters to neutralize athletes and electrifying dunkers. :dunno: When I said the shit was wack and boring 2 years ago nigs wanted to ock me off the board. And some folks complaining in this thread cheered it on. It didnt matter then, it was about ensuring 1 player didnt win even if it meant destroying the competitive nature of the game. So no crying now.

The writing was on the wall last playoff. Several players and teams had the opportunity to take the mantle and draw attention to themselves. Only 1 player took advantage but then he went to another team and now this year he sitting games every week.

There just arent enough engaging players to carry casual fan interest. That includes how they carry themselves off the court. Even when they have the spotlight all to themselves they dont take advantage.

I'll let you tell it, but I'm not watching a Lakers game without Bron or Davis playing. Nor am I watching a Clippers game without PG13 or Kawhi....

The same way I haven't watched 1 out of the 11 Bengals games so far in a 16 game season. Wouldn't pay a cent to go see one either....
:dunno:

Every time Lebron and the Lakers come on, I watch. I do agree that three point shooting may have had an affect on how, and why people watch the NBA. That whole Warriors dynasty was kind of boring to me. And maybe they do need to get younger and more entertaining analysts. Van Gundy is good, I can only listen to Mark Jackson when Van Gundy is with him.

Darryl Morey fucked up alot of people bread.

And yes, load management is part to blame. Its the reason the season started two weeks earlier. That shit decreases build up and anticipation and results in elss viewers. Numbers will pick up after xmas.

It's the local commentators that are bad.
I watched a Raptors game a celtics game and it was just bad. Both crews sounded flabby and sick. Its like listening to a (white) grandpa talk about the game. I don't know how much getting younger guys in there would help but I don't see how it would hurt

Honestly streaming services probably play a role too who wants to watch the Knicks lose to the Grizzlies by 40, when I can Netflix and Chill, Hulu and Hang, Vudu and Vape, Crackle with Casual....
:dunno:

The NBA has had 82 game season for dam n near 4 decades and people watch... Hell back in the days it was an extremely limited amount of games and teams you could see , yet people watch... Most people could only watch a local team if you had 1, maybe a tnt game, and maybe an nbc game during the weekend... This was majority of people in America... If you were lucky like cali, ny, Texas you were able to see multiple teams play during the season but even than you didn't have access to all games... Only some people when it was available got NBA access where you had shitloads of games... Now we in the era of the internet where we could watch every game you want..yet ratings are down... Cause the NBA created a narrative of only a few people stories and made the NBA about them instead of the sport... Old school fans love the sport.. The new fans who the NBA try to catered to only love the few individuals who the NBA told stories about.. Nba killed its on product... I told people this was gonna happen.. I said when certain individuals retire or fall off watch that demographic completely disappear and it's happening.. Lol I knew it

The NBA is missing 2 of their top 5 players in Curry and Durant and the #1 pick Zion...

PG13, Kyrie, Victor O.... Alot of early injuries....

All of those early N.O. and G.S. games killed the month of National TV games...

Ain't nothing wrong with the length of the season. Either your a fan of the game or you aren't. Me personally I hate the fact they would have the same teams on every week. Also like someone said. The majority of the talent is on the west coast and that's a no go for an east coast person like myself. Also get rid of Hubie Brown and the woman That does the espn games

there were always injuries in the nba.. But back in the days you had teams so even if an all star was out his team was still good enough to win or at least give it a good battle.. These squads ain't built like that which shows how much lack of talent to have a complete team is... Barkley could have back spasm and miss a game.. But kj, dan marle will still go out there and give it a go... Not like that anymore... Also people would still watch even if Barkley had to sit out cause they knew the sun's were still good without him

Let’s also throw in: 2 of the league’s biggest US markets, NYC and Chicago; have teams that are absolute trash and another in Phoenix that has a big population from a MSA standpoint but they suck too. It’s real easy nowadays as others have mentioned, to do or watch something else as opposed to watching your” hometown” get ran off the floor by 30 and the game is over by the middle of the third-quarter.

I get why the Knicks suck. Their management doesnt care because they still sell the most merch, sell out every night and got the best local TV deal. But theres no excuse for the Bulls suckitude this decade.

This. I believe cord cutting plays a big role. Cable providers are fucking shit up. In my area comcast was the only cable network that would show the Rockets, so if you had direct tv or at&t you couldn't even see your own dam local team unless you switch to comcast.

I cut the cord over a year ago and I just find games online for free. There's a lot of people like me doing the same thing and that's hurting NBAs pockets.

Greedy as cable companies with their expensive packages shouldn't charge you extra or force you to switch providers to watch local teams.

The Bulls suckitude is based on GarPax and GarPax alone; they must have dirt on him bc they should have been fired years ago. No FAs want to play for that franchise.
Also, fwiw; they are still living off the Jordan years 21 years later. That don’t help. They fell into D. Rose; dumb luck; couldn’t land one top FA in 2010. That said a lot then and now.
