A St. Lucia man refuses to sell land for $60 million

That's really not specific. All he said was "some guy offered $60M or something." Would be interesting to know exactly who is trying to buy the land, and whether this owner even has a deed. He's got no modern conveniences and hasn't been to a doctor, but he has a deed locked away somewhere?? Are there any real estate taxes there??? Dude would be paying $1M a year in the states on 50 acres of prime real estate.

There was a time in America when black folks owned a lot of land. What happen you say? They sold it off. If only we hadn't done so I believe black folks would have been better off. Let this man be.

Most of the Islands off the Carolina's were owned by free slaves "Gullah" to include Hilton Head. I respect this man for his stance to keep the property within the family. I hope his son keep his word, and keep it in the family. I hope there's no eminent domain laws that will take the family's property.

Fuck that.

I'm not a believer that money brings happiness but this dude can be content somewhere else. Donate the money to charity if you don't need it or want for material things. But it makes no sense to turn down that kind of money.

It makes perfect sense if you have a sense of LEGACY and HERITAGE.

I have worked around and with some very weathly people in my life and they all have the same philosophy when it comes to wealth and land. Your heritage, wealth and future is in your land ownership. something you can pass on to your children and their children. It provides them with a sense of self, a connection to family (you should have seen our 2005 family reunion, 5 acres covered with cars n buses, the other 10 acres covered with people, food, rides, and children). I did not realize the value of my grandfathers wisdom until I saw the amount of people I was related to and some I even worked with that never knew we were related. My grandfather did not make it pass the 5th grade but died "wealthier" (not rich) than any of his children, except 1, are to date.
Having Land to call you own, not just a house but some acreage to go with it is the best symbol of home to me. That man that didnt want to sell his HOME has some integrity and value beyond what 60 million can buy. FUCK the corporations, his soul and mine are not for sale.
God Bless that man....money cant buy family, a restful place for your soul, happiness, love, and the genuine smile of 5 generations.

Somewhere, I had the feeling that gramps was in heaven like
bc I know we were on earth doing it up on the strength of his hard work, integrity, and LEGACY! It reminds me everyday of him saying, "not having is no excuse for not getting". I went to the 5th grade....whats your excuse!

What would that kind of money mean to a man, that never needed it. Your comment is reminiscent of the average American take on other cultures and I quote... "give 'em Coca Cola for their property"

Exactly. Props to him. Sometimes things mean a lot to other people that people outside of that particular person can't see the value.

His story is not alone here in St.Lucia, alot of ppl just dont want to sell there lands. But the $60M is the highest offer so far for land here.

"I want to give my kids just enough so that they would feel that they could do anything, but not so much that they would feel like doing nothing."

-- Warren Buffett, whose children will not inherit a significant proportion of his wealth due to his opposition to the transfer of great fortunes from one generation to the next.

And a question on the importance of blood and family-- Had Martin Luther King not had children, would he have no legacy? Would he leave nothing behind? Is his greater legacy the lives and actions of his children or his own life and actions?

yes  he has 2 generations after him...LMAO He jumped out the chair when chick asked if he used a saddle. Like "Bitch please". money aint everything. Look how happy and healthy he is. that's peace of mind

i agree if he was under 40 but that guy is 70 yrs old and plans to die and be buried there

Good for him He did not need the money before so why would he need it now!!!!
Mutherfucker would have just brought the land and cut down all of the Trees and build condos!!!!
:smh:

 Nice contribution.

55 acres. People are making him out to be some nobly man keeping his little piece of land so the community can live off of it... 55 acres. The man has no neighbors!!!

Much bigger than I would have thought with much better conditions...

And after seeing him talk for myself, I can drop all of that "based on the article" crap and just say HE IS BEING SELFISH. Again, not necessarily a bad thing, but it is all about him. He wants to be buried there, it's that simple.

 Just re-reading the thread. I like this response. Since nobody else will, I co-sign myself, goddamn it!

They're not gonna do that shit, man!!!

You're the third or fourth person to criticize me for not focusing on the people trying to buy the land but I wouldn't write that Enron should have given more money to charity, either. I just don't expect that from corporations and business men. It would be good but I assume their hearts are made of shit from jump.

I like that man a lot less after seeing how massive "his land" is, also... I'm going to have to look up how much land there is on Earth and what it would break down to if you evenly proportioned it based on all the people on Earth.

Surface Area of the Earth

Earth has a surface area of 196,940,400 square miles, slightly less than a perfect ball with a diameter of 7913.5 miles (which is the mean diameter of the Earth - see "Prove it" under 103).

The surface area of the seven continents and all the islands of the world is about 57 million miles, while the total area of the six habitable continents (Antarctica excluded) is around 52 million square miles.

Including Antarctica , over one fifth of the globe's land mass is under water (oceans, lakes, rivers, etc.) or ice. This leaves about 45 million square miles of exposed land.

The human population on earth has crossed six billion. If we distribute all the exposed land evenly among all mankind, 133 people would have to share one square mile. What that means is that every single person on Earth, man woman and child would have close to five acres of land for his or her use. More precisely, each person would get 209,000 square feet of land, or a square plot of land 457 feet on each side.

Not all this land can be used beneficially however. A significant portion of the Earth's exposed land is unhabitable or cannot be used for any agricultural purpose. Large portions lie in the far north. Large portions are extremely arid. Large portions are very mountainous. In sum, only about one fourth of all the land on earth, or somewhat more than 12 million square miles, is arable.

Today, over half of the arable land in the world is in fact not under cultivation. Bringing the unused land into service in many cases would require huge investments of money and effort, and would do considerable damage to the environment. For example, only about 28% of the arable land on the African continent is used for growing crops. Immense tracts of forests or jungles would have to be cleared to bring the rest of the arable land on that continent to productive use.

Thus, only about one eighth of each imaginary plot of land distributed to each person is land which is under cultivation. In effect, each person has a piece of land about 26,000 square feet (a square 161 feet on each side or just a bit more than ½ an acre) at his or her disposal on which to grow all that he or she needs.

I respect that

But I have a feeling after he dies they will end up taking it for free

I hope he at least gets his wish of being buried there

But they might be jackoffs and not even fulfill that wish smh I wouldnt put it past them

Fuck that ignorant ass old nigga...he must not have any kids/grandkids to be behaving so stubbornly

And for them to offer 60 mill like it's nothing best believe they will get that property 1 way or the other

Holding on to land for "sentimental value" is just as materialistic a notion as accepting $$$ for it..materialism doesn't just have to do w/ $$$

Man his stubbornness ("wisdom") is coming from his age...he @ the point where he don't care about uprooting himself and making any significant changes in his life and that's fine...he entitled to that...but fuck outta here w/ all the sanctimonious bullshit...if dude was like 50 or younger he'd haul ass and take that $$$

fuckin awesome... Real Man Standing in St Lucia right there..

me personally I would take the money but I have no emotional attachment to the land so its so easy to say... big up to Sir St Lucia!!
