I know one thing they didn't teach him..... how to say the word peripheral or periphery or whatever it was that he mangled, correct;y.....
A lot of what he says is on point. Some stuff not so much. The sir/ma'am thing definitely didn't stick. Losing accents is not necessarily a thing either. But you do learn to eat fast, you peep bullshit easier, your world does get much bigger and yeah the dark humor is true! I served in both the Army and the Air Force and some of the stuff he didn't mention is that in addition to being comfortable speaking in front of people you lose a lot of bathroom shame. Once you shit in an environment like this there's very little that embarrasses you.

Accents usually change depending on who you hang around and ther city you are stationed in.
The hanging out is not true. He kinda mixed some of it with basic training. Outside of basic training, Black folk usually hang out with black folk and white folk did the same.
I just started learning how to slow down eating. That's the first thing my boys notice when I went back home. "Damn, Julian, you done already?"
Over my career I lost my very severe NYC accent (that we don’t believe we have) and not sound like a combination of everything. I do think this was the reason.
