50 Cent Slams Jay Z’s Tidal, Claims He Could Have Made It ‘More Exciting’

In an interview with Los Angeles radio station REAL 92.3, the "Candy Shop" rapper sat down with hosts Letty & DJ Damage for their "The Realest" segment.

When the conversation turned to Jay Z's music streaming service, 50 Cent revealed he wasn't invited to join Tidal's roster of artists, which he considers a mistake because he owns his music catalog.

"They probably could've did something more exciting if they reached out, because the people you saw there don't even own the rights to their music," he said. "So they can't say it's gonna come out of Tidal. It has to go everywhere. So why would you actually buy Tidal to get something that would be everywhere else?"

The hip-hop mogul was referring to the cost to join the subscription-only streaming service, which launched with a fee of $9.99 per month for a basic membership and a $19.99 membership for better sound quality.

Madonna, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Usher, Deadmau5 and Beyoncé helped Jay Z relaunch Tidal at a star-studded event in March. But 50 Cent said it's not the artists, but the record companies that ultimately decide where the music is streamed.

"[The companies] have contracts and companies are gonna do everything to get the maximum performance out of the music. They're not gonna just put it through Tidal as a service."

Jay Z bought Tidal in January for a reported $56 million. The streaming service was originally billed as being created to put control of music back in the hands of artists. While Tidal has promised exclusive content, many consumers have shunned it, saying they'd rather use "freemium" streaming services like Spotify.

50 Cent suggested that Jay Z chose to team up with certain artists, only because they have recently released music and their names in the headlines.

"Usher was there and Madonna and all these people. That's a little bit more of a, when you say 'it was business,' it's more of a corporate play," he said. "When the record is playing on the air, they say 'oh alright. Let's get this guy.'"

The rapper went on to say he's an independent artist and "could have made something special come through Tidal."

Tidal wasn't the only thing on 50 Cent's mind. The star, who executive produces Starz series "Power," once again accused "Empire" of copying his show's promotional campaign.

"They did steal the idea," he said of the hit FOX series. "But the cast, the talent that's on there, I want to see them be successful. My first film, I worked with Terrence Howard, he's the leader of the show, I want to see him have success. And then Taraji, she's cool... I might have to date her."

50 Cent's Boxing Promotions Company Files for Bankruptcy

50 Cent's boxing promotion company SMS Promotions has filed for bankruptcy, according to a statement the rapper's reps sent to Billboard.

SMS Promotions will "continue the operation of its business" and take advantage of the filing to "reorganize in an effort to protect its investment in worldwide boxing."

The statement reads:

"SMS Promotions, LLC, (SMS Promotions) a boxing promotion company owned by Curtis Jackson, a/k/a 50 Cent, today announced that it has filed for relief under chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code. The filing allows the company to reorganize in an effort to protect its investment in worldwide boxing promotion and a promising stable of talented, young fighters.

"SMS Promotions is expected to continue operating under the supervision of the bankruptcy court – in furtherance of its mission to become one of the world’s leading boxing and sports promotion companies. Founded in 2012, SMS Promotions has gained international fame as the promoter of landmark sporting events and superstar fighters such as junior middleweight James Kirkland.

"This filing for bankruptcy protection permits SMS Promotions to continue the operation of its business, while it pursues an orderly reorganization of its affairs,” says Patrick J. Neligan, Jr., partner at Neligan Foley, LLP and counsel for SMS Promotions. “Under the direction of Mr. Jackson, SMS Promotions looks forward to reorganizing as a new corporate entity and becoming one of the leading promotion companies in the world of professional boxing."

According to court documents that TMZ Sports obtained, the company filed for Chapter 11 on Monday in Connecticut. They’re reportedly in $100,000-500,000 worth of debt.

50 Cent launched SMS Promotions at the end of 2012, shortly after him and boxer Floyd Mayweather parted ways from their company, The Money Team. SMS Promotions signed four fighters including Yuriorkis Gamboa, Andrew Dirrell, Billy Dib and Celestino Caballero.

50 made some wise moves. But a stinker is a stinker regardless of how you spin it. Tidal has too many other competitors in a pond already small. Frankly I don't think there's enough people willing to pay streaming music on top of their data plans.

I don't think it was a slam. He was asked a question and gave his opinion.

When Facebook came out there were a lot of competitors and no one thought MySpace would fail.

these kind of headlines every week only serve to make lots of people say

"what is tidal? what is streaming? let me go look"

Old 50 woulda hopped in made a couple dozen songs and slid them to Jay then encourage everyone he works/worked with to advertise, cross promote and buy two subscriptions... then challenge everybody in the biz to outdo him.

1st thing is people don't pay to use social media sites.
2nd thing Is when Facebook first came out it was only for college students, so they wernt direct competitors until FB opened up to everyone.
So I'm not sure the comparison warranted.

Whose first time hearing about tidal would be because of a fifty interview?

A bunch of people that you or I don't know. Or even if they've heard it several times, hearing it again would be the a repeat hearing, which will trigger the curiousity for some.

And I'm not just speaking of this interview with 50. Theres someone making a comment on TIDAL at least once a week in the news these days. From 50 to the Wall Street Journal.

Old 50 mattered enough in the music world for Jay to actually ASK him to be a part of it. He only asked marquee artists who have influence in the market to be a partner.

He owns a catalog that nobody is checking for compared to those other artists
maybe so specially for the last 2/3 albums. but i also looked at it from marketing side. he and diddy with diddy being nr 1 are the best to do it. look what he did with his headphones in a crowded industry. is sad cause i dont see nobody promoting tidal.
I don't think it was a slam. He was asked a question and gave his opinion.

yeah it wasnt a slam. he has a point. the only guy that that can do what he wants with his music is jay. even sony is doing sucka shit asking money for beyonce.

Agreed. 50 isn't hot anymore. He's not relevant. That's why he wasn't invited.

50 is only relevant when he talks

His music is awful

In fact IMO he's holding Buck and Banks back, because he is so cool musically

Actually Jay and 50 could of had a deal with Power, similar to Fox's Empire and Glee, with Itunes were they release weekly singles, then the soundtrack.
Being Mary Jane advertise Spotify every time a song is played on the show.

50 Cent's Boxing Promotions Company Files for Bankruptcy

50cent has a portfolio of businesses from various industries heck donald trump went bankrupt twice and luke 2 live crew said after he filed also it's just to unload shit clear the headaches but that dont mean your broke

This. No disputing he is a smart dude with business though. I love Power but 50 be hating when he don't need to. No empowerment from his bucktoothed ass. Jay-Z signed Nas and Jada, while 50 wants to have everything alone. Fuck his opinion. Even if Jay fail he still win because of his other investments.

Dude hasnt made a relevant record in 5 years. Why are we interviewing him and speaking with him.

His corporate sponsors used him as much as they use jigga. Both serve their own private interest.

If 50's so smart, and so inde...where is his distribution/label?

If Jay-Z is so great, why did none of his artist blow? Why did he give whites more control?

Nobody cares about sound quality, if that was the case why do we record digitally? If the public cared abotu QUALITY in general half these Tom's wouldn't have a job.

I respect both of these guys music and business moves, but 50 is right on this one. Jay-Z does not even have the rights to his own album "Reasonable Doubt."

So what 50 was saying makes sense, those artists involved in Tidal are popular, yes, but they don't own their catalog and have major label deals. So what difference does it make if Usher signs on if Sony owns the rights to Usher's music?? Sony will ultimately tell Usher (just using him as an example, he is a dope artist) what and where his music will be streaming and how much he will be paid.

Unless all of those artists go independent and buy the rights to their catalog, Tidal is just another streaming service for twice the price of Spotify & Apple. Unless I'm missing something...
