True but it's always a way to recover the data

Really? It would take a very astute person to have a drive fail and be able to recover all their data. Have you researched the process and pricing for data recovery?

On pricing last I heard its around $1.00 a gig. So that 5 TB drive will probably cost you around $5, 000. OK so you return the drive, the manufacturer apologizes ships you a new drive. But your data is still gone unless you backup your drives. The drive is never as valuable as your data.

My main PC is running with 5 internal drives about 15 TBs. I'm in the process of duplicating each drive and storing each drive offsite. It may sound crazy, it'll cost about a grand but its cheaper than paying data recovery fees.

No haven't priced data recovery. I do have a guy that's an exceptional computer wiz. He's recovered data for me before. I think its a good idea to store data offsite and pay for those services. My data isn't that valuable really, just some vids and pics of family or projects I've done. I usually store my stuff on different sites like, flickr, photobucket, or even in email if it's something I'd be hurt if I lost.

There's nothing better than storing and safeguarding your own data!!! I'll never be in the cloud!!!

Seagate took too much data. I'll never buy anything they sell. It's WD or bust

preach the truth!!!

I worked as a production supervisor at a small outfit assembling, and building tough books for the military. we used Seagate drives as part of the contract. those damn Seagate failed too damn often for my tastes resulting in too much rework. finally, I had enough and convinced the PM to buy some western digital. no more issues. my own personal Seagate external drive failed and cost me more data than a mofo. I swore off Seagate that day and have been WD ever since. Seagate is your go to in a pinch but after working in IT a few years, WD is my reliable recommended brand.

I have used these guys to get data back. They did a nice job and well worth the money if the data is that important to you. In the end, data is only worth what you are willing to pay for it

I have ZERO confidence in cloud storage, regardless of contents being stored. What's not online can't be tampered with or lost. Now I'll admit cloud storage failures haven't occurred too often. But when they have occurred its been major. Amazon got popped earlier this year causing all kinds of problems.

If you stored your downloads to a cloud service and that service gets hacked and never recovers. The hard drive in your PC is 4 years old and your a heavy user, can you be sure you'll be able to recoup all your data?

My thing is this, purchasing storage capacity today is crazy cheap. We pay less for TBs today than we used to pay for a gig of storage. My first PC had a whopping 1.2 gig drive. A box of 50 floppies was $30. Today you can get a thumb drive with 32 gigs for 20 bucks.
