3D Printing Solid Objects

3D printing is a form of additive manufacturing technology where a three dimensional object is created by laying down successive layers of material. 3D printers are generally faster, more affordable and easier to use than other additive manufacturing technologies. 3D printers offer product developers the ability to print parts and assemblies made of several materials with different mechanical and physical properties in a single build process. Advanced 3D printing technologies yield models that can serve as product prototypes.

Why the hell don't we have a cure for cancer? :angry:

ETA:Who will be the first BGOLer to try and print one of these internet chicks :lol:

If you have an idea for a business and need to create physical mock-ups/prototypes there has never been a better time to get things popping;

Good drop!

I snapped these pics a little over a month ago at an openhouse at our local technical school. The objects are made in a 3D printer out of powdered metal and held together with a binder. They then fire the designs in an oven that burns off the binder and fuses the metal into a solid, functioning part.

Wired did an issue on this a few months ago. Check out this video:

The money to be made is not in the cure....it's in the treatment.

Exactly! Check out what the some former UC Professors are getting just for researching cancer (ridiculous sums of money :smh:):

"Onuchic, who is co-director of UC San Diego's Center for Theoretical Biological Physics, said he was drawn to Rice mainly for the research funds and new building, along with the chance to work with cancer experts in Houston. "The opportunities were spectacular," said Onuchic, whose research focuses on protein movement and chemical reactions in gene networks. His UC salary, including summer grants, is $265,000; he and his colleagues said Rice would give them 40% increases.

The three scientists are expected to take with them much of their National Science Foundation grant, which has paid $6.6 million since 2008 and is expected to provide several million more over the next two years. At Rice, their funding will also include a $10-million grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, created with a $3-billion state bond issue approved by voters in 2007.

Levine, 55, who has been at UC San Diego for 25 years and earns $187,000 a year, said Rice's new and larger lab space and extra administrative support was too good to turn down. Another factor is that Rice, which has a fifth of UC San Diego's 27,417 students, is much less bureaucratic, he added.

Wolynes, 58, is a 10-year veteran of UC San Diego and earns $330,000 a year. Moving together keeps the team intact — it's a "Three Musketeers situation," he said — and the Texas cancer money will mean less hustling for grants. He still greatly admires UC, he said, but believes its "period of expansion" may be over."

WOW!!! If they can print from CAD designs as well that would be super shit...now its just great shit :yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

They can. Some of the better ones have the ability to create full mechanical mock-ups. Not just printing up individual parts for you to assemble later on, but fully functional mechanical designs with moving parts. Think about a crescent wrench with the adjustable opening. They use a special layer that dissolves after the part is agitated that allows the parts to move freely. Gears and all.

I wanted to see how long the printing process for that wrench actually was. They never said but dope shit either way. I'd be the first to be rollin around tha hood in a printed Bugatti!

We made mock ups of parts for an ROV in 2007 using solid works homie. This is the shit for pre-fab. :yes:

:yes::dance:

2011 is kicking ass so far... we don't have hover-skateboards like I thought we would by now (Goddamn you Back to the Future 2 :angry: ) But other than that shit is really popping tech-wise.

Now that I mention that. You already know what haters are gonna be sayin...

Female: Damn girl! Did you see that nigga TeEdIzZeL's car?!?
Female Friend: Hell yah! Im tryin to roll around in that!

Random Hater: Man, that nigga aint shit! His shit printed!!
