Hoge: Pernell McPhee Challenges Bears, Calls Losing ‘Sad’ And ‘Sick’
MINNEAPOLIS — Pernell McPhee has never felt like this before. He’s never been on a losing team.

“Hell yeah,” he said Sunday when asked if it’s been a hard adjustment. “It’s sad. It’s sick.”

Sick is probably the best way to describe the Bears’ lackluster 38-17 loss to the Vikings Sunday at TCF Bank Stadium — a loss that guarantees a losing season for the second year in a row.

Missed tackles. Blown coverages. Miscommunication. It all piled up in Minneapolis and had McPhee questioning his team’s effort after the game.

“I just think that other teams want it more than we want it,” McPhee said. “And that’s the end of the story. I mean, when you want something, you go take it. And right now, nobody ain’t really trying to take it. Everybody just trying to fill it out.”

No, McPhee didn’t pull a Jimmy Butler in the locker room after the game. He didn’t call out anybody by name and he offered solutions. His comments stood out, but they weren’t poignant. He challenged his teammates — including their practice habits — but didn’t throw anyone specific under the bus.

“Me and everybody just need to look at ourselves in the mirror and point at ourselves — we can’t point at each other — and say, ‘What can we do better to help our team win?’ That’s what it’s all about.”

McPhee’s most notable solution?

“I think it’s habits in practice. When you be in practice and you don’t finish a play wrapping a guy up and you don’t do it in practice, of course when you get on the field you ain’t going to do it. And I think we gotta start practicing good habits. (When) we start practicing wrapping up tackles and driving our legs and taking a guy down, that’s when we’ll start showing it on the field.”

Of course, you can’t actually tackle anyone at full speed in practice, but McPhee doesn’t think tackling habits are being emphasized enough — and that’s a problem.

“I think it comes from not really practicing that, emphasizing that,” he said. “I don’t say we don’t actually do it, but we don’t emphasize it enough. Hey, wrap up every play, make sure you drive your legs and take a guy down — I mean, mentally, not physically in practice.”

This sure sounds like the first hint of a player questioning the coaching staff in the John Fox era, but maybe Jimmy Butler should take notes. McPhee brought up a very valid solution without naming names or challenging anyone’s credibility.

That’s actual leadership.

And McPhee is smart enough to know he has to look at himself too. It was just three days ago when he claimed Washington wouldn’t have gotten off to the hot start they did a week ago if he had been on the field. He missed the game because of his on-going knee injury.

“If I had been out there, that shit never would have happened,” he said. “We won’t start off like that again.”

But the Bears did start off like that again. The Vikings marched right down the field and scored a touchdown on their first drive of the game — a methodical, 13-play, 88-yard drive that included six first downs.

“Real frustrating. It was crazy man,” McPhee said about that drive. “A lot of it came with missed tackles. Shit. We had them 3rd-and-10 and you know, blown coverage, missed communication. We got a lot of young guys on the back end. We just got to keep competing and keep communicating.”

This isn’t the first time McPhee has questioned some of the talent around him and his gripes are obviously warranted.

“If I got to be the only dog out there, I will, but you know, I got my boys’ back,” he said. “I think we just had a lot of miscommunication and a lot of missed tackles we just got to fix that in practice. That’s it.”

McPhee has played through a knee injury the entire season and while his play has suffered at times, his effort hasn’t. He just wants that effort matched by the other 10 guys on the field with him, and he certainly doesn’t want to be on a losing football team again.

“I ain’t never felt like this. But you know what, you live and learn and it’s just growth in life,” McPhee said. “It’s going to show what kind of guy I am, how I’m going to respond to it. I promise I’m going to respond the right way. I’m going to continue to be behind my
teammates and continue to do whatever I can to help this team move forward.”

If he conveys the same message to his teammates as he did to reporters after the game, he’ll do just that.

Bears have a plethora of problems, how Pace and Fox will fix this I have no idea. First off they need to lose these last two games to get a top ten pick.

Has anyone fucked up a contract year like Alshon? I wonder what type of money his agent will be expecting this offseason.

I thought this was interesting

6. Chicago Bears
Analysis: The Bears look like they may have unearthed three future studs in defensive tackle Eddie Goldman, running back

Jeremy Langford, and free safety Adrian Amos. The trio have played significant roles for Chicago this season, while center Hroniss Grasu has been adequate for a rookie. If first rounder Kevin White can rebound from a shin injury that held him out of the lineup during his freshman campaign, the Bears could have a terrific draft class on their hands.

Watch them not resign Alshon.... and as far as the Draft class. I agree... although Im not all the way sold on Langford. Some mocks have the Bears picking up that Ole Miss WR in the first round.

I think they'll resign AJ. I agree on the draft class analysis too.I believe in Langford, but also think they need to continue to dedicate themselves to a 2-back system. Although Forte is gone, I like the way Carey is coming along and hope they draft or sign a big back for the 3 spot..

He's been so injury prone this year with his hamstrings I can't see another team going after him.

I saw Myles Jack from UCLA on one mock.

We need to go Linebacker or O Line IMO

This year has been about overall what I expected. They've played better at times than I expextes, they've also played about where the talent is.(see last week) But they've found some quality players going forward and if they tank the last 2 game they may get a good enough draft pick to find a real difference maker. We need speed at LB and a few guys that can makes plays in the secondary, a few O linemen couldn't hurt either. But I don't think the Bears are that far off from being competitive again.

I agree... but watch them go DLine with the first overall pick again.

Do you all think Gase is gone this offseason? It would be a shame if he is.

If Jaylon Smith from ND is available,I hope they get him.If not, I hope they go get the best OL avail in the first. I like Jack, but I feel like he's injury prone.

Im not sold on Gase's play calling, so I won't shed tears is he leaves for a HC gig..

I depends in how they close the season. On one hand Gase is really just an extension of Fox. I have no doubt he could call a more aggressive game. But I doubt Fox would let him. So I can't judge him on that. Also depends on who gets fired.

Eddie Royal is a fuckin waste.

and I wonder what they're going to do with Long. He went from being good at his old position to sucking and making numerous false start and holding mistakes during the year.

I thought about the baseball infield thing when they moved him. Having the tools doesn't mean you can successfully make the switch. 3rd base and SS aren't the same, and neither are guard and tackle. Don't weaken 2 positions trying to be cute. That's exactly what they did

In other news, B Mashall is killin the Pats today :smh:

Giving a quality WR away for nothing made no sense. Fuck that addition by subtraction bullshit. That shit was stupid. Didnt even need the benefit of hindsight to know how it was going to end. He was hurt all last season and everybody could see it. But they tried to pass it off like he was over the hill.:smh:

Mixed feelings about this game for me.... I know Cutler feels good though. lol Forte is KILLING ME! I start him every week in my fantasy squad. ugh.

I just dont feel any sense of urgency from this staff man. The sad realization is that this season won't tell us much about them,or about Pace. To them this is a rebuild/first year get your feet wet and assess type of deal. We won't know what we have in them until we: a) see what the coaches think they need personnel wise after having a full season to analyze + b) see if Pace can go out and get what they think they need.

I just pray to God that we're not sitting here this time next year and come to find out that what we've seen so far is what we get :smh:...

Bro that line is Swiss cheese

When u have a all pro Guard and u switch him over to fucking tackle and he sucks at it

We need a Solid Oline

I'm tired of 3 and outs with a 125 million dollar quarterback

This season was such a loss. Winnable games against Detroit, Minnesota, Denver, Washington and San Francisco (fucking SAN FRANCISCO!!) that we lost due to everything from missed FGs to penalties. This could have been a playoff team in a division with a Green Bay team that's not as good as advertised and a Minnesota team that's a fluke IMO (still got AP which you must respect however). The Washington game is of note; that should have been an easy 'W' (the dropped INT when Cousins threw up a gopher ball should burn all offseason); we got manhandled at the point of attack on both sides of the ball though and when I came to crunch time; no luck. Hell, even today, in a WIN; how do you give up that hail mary TD at the end of the game? Yeah, it was a 'W' but that shit is still INEXCUSABLE!!

Sigh.....

Your gonna keep getting 3 and outs with that 125 million dollar QB, he is not the answer but the QB situation in the NFL is so bad that you really can't find anybody better than Cutler at the moment so they are stuck with him. Long hasn't been good the last 2 games or so but he was OK. I would prefer him to stay at guard but he has the ability to play both tackle positions. He just needs reps. That defense needs play makers, Chicago has always been about D, they tried to get away from it and look what happened. They need to rebuild that D and they need to start at inside LB, Shea McClellan is horrible. They also need an upgrade at legitimate 3-4 pass rusher. Hell bruh they need help every damn where. Watch these fools when these last 2 games when they should be losing them to get a top ten pick.

I heard their draft pick will be around 10 or 11, not bad but it could of been higher if they lost to Tampa last week. They need playmakers everywhere, I hope Pace turns out to be a good GM because he has his work cut out for him.
