Pacers’ actions speaking louder than words after 5-0 start, but not by much

george.jpg

The 5-0 Pacers, the NBA’s lone remaining unbeaten team, notched their latest win in impressive fashion Wednesday against the Bulls. The nationally televised bout was closely contested for three and a half quarters, but then, in just a few minutes of game time, it was over. Indiana rattled off a massive run behind the scoring of its supporting cast and pulled away for a 97-80 victory. What was intended as a duel between heavyweights hardly played out as such down the stretch, as the Pacers kicked into gear precisely as the Bulls stumbled — the story of both teams’ young seasons packaged for convenience.

Chicago isn’t scrambling, nor should it be. There’s still a superstar lead guard, a sharp coach and a disciplined defense there, all of which should bring a successful season. Indiana is just in a different class at the moment, as evidenced by its unblemished start and commanding efficiency differential (+13.4 per 100 possessions, second only to the Warriors). All-world defense and functional offense make for a handsome pair — handsome enough, it seems, that the Pacers are already (and justifiably) eyeing loftier goals for their season.

After Wednesday’s win, Paul George, David West and coach Frank Vogel chimed in on what the Pacers have left to accomplish (all quotes via Steve Aschburner of NBA.com):

1. Vogel: “5-0, that’s a good start. But how we’re playing is even more encouraging. I think we have a championship-level defense. And we’ve got enough offensive pieces to put it all together on the offensive end. So it will be an exciting year.”

This is an aim that’s far bigger than a mere regular-season win over the Bulls. Indiana had a championship-caliber defense last season, with room to spare. The Pacers slowed the Knicks and challenged the Heat, displaying the resilient execution and strategic tinkering necessary to beat teams on the defensive end. It was the Pacers’ offense, predictably, that left them just short of the Finals, and just short of any chance to test their championship mettle.

The important thing here is that Vogel sees the offense for what it is: successful to a point (or to ho-hum 95.4 points, if you’d like to get specific), though still more a pile of components than a finished product. The bench is far more robust and George is scraping new heights with his shot creation and efficiency, though the individual elements still have yet to be arranged in a way that would make the Pacers an out-and-out juggernaut. For now, they settle for high marks in their pursuit of a “championship-level defense,” along with trust that Vogel can bring things along on the other side of the floor. As far as season-long ambition goes, these aims are perfectly reasonable for the Pacers.

2. George: “We want to step away from that shadow as the ‘little brothers’ of this division. [The Bulls'] success is the Michael Jordan era. This is a new age, this is a new team. It’s ours till they take it.”

To George, a win over the Bulls clearly isn’t just a win over the Bulls. This was a 17-point declaration that the burden of proof in the Central Division does not rest with the Pacers. Indiana bludgeoned its way to the Eastern Conference finals just a few months ago, and within that series it was a single win — or perhaps a few plays — away from knocking off the defending champion Heat. Chicago can claim no similar accomplishment in the recent past, as Derrick Rose’s lengthy absence left the Bulls as plucky participants for two straight postseasons. These teams are close in physical proximity, similarly styled and will likely both vie for the conference crown. Yet they’ve largely been two ships passing quietly in the night, ascending through the conference in alternating intervals. Neither has really been in command for long enough to declare the dawn of a “new age,” yet here we are.

The assumed conflict is interesting, in that divisional lines mean essentially nothing in NBA terms. Beyond that, these two have but a single — albeit testy — playoff series between them, from 2011, and even that matchup involved a far different Pacers team. Danny Granger led Indiana in minutes played that season, but more recently has logged just 74 minutes in the Pacers’ last 106 regular-season and playoff games. Granger aside, five of the next six in minutes played — Darren Collison, Brandon Rush, Mike Dunleavy, Josh McRoberts and Tyler Hansbrough — are Pacers no more. David West, who has been credited from within the team for changing its culture, hadn’t yet arrived, and George himself hadn’t yet arrived. George Hill was still in San Antonio, Lance Stephenson in college at Cincinnati and the Pacers’ supporting cast scattered across the league.

This is why Rose said he doesn’t consider Indiana to be among Chicago’s rivals — specifically citing the changing roster and the departure from “when Darren Collison was on the team.” These two teams are opponents. They’re contenders. They’re foils, even. But the Pacers and Bulls don’t yet share a rivalry by any conventional sports definition, as there isn’t as much familiarity between the two rosters as one might suppose.

It’s just fine that George wants to make sure his team has dominion over another in the East’s assumed elite, but framing the relationship between these two teams as a “COME AND TAKE IT” battle of intra-division foes strikes me as a bit of pro-wrestling-style silliness.

3. West: “We’ve talked about competing for the ’1′ seed from opening night. We feel like that’s a realistic goal. Obviously we understand there are some tough teams out there, some teams got better. Obviously Miami’s the defending champs. But we trust who we are. We believe in who we are. … We’re working toward that. That’s our focus. I remember saying that after Game 7 last year, ‘It’s a totally different series if we’re on our home court.’”

This is an important reminder that the top seed in the conference has more pragmatic value than anything else. Forget the statement sent by a dominant season; home court empirically matters in the playoffs, and the Pacers are wise to consider it in a season with so many formidable teams lined up in the East.

Indiana matches up so well with Miami that every minor advantage matters, and in the grand scheme of things the Pacers might not be so far removed from Chicago or Brooklyn by season’s end as to ignore the value of playing at home. The Pacers need this, in the same way they need just about every break they can get. Winning a title takes an incredible amount of luck, but securing home court through a run to the East’s best record is one of the few ways in which the Pacers can make their own.

Granger was pretty healthy his first seven years but now that Paul George has taken his spot he can't stay healthy.

We know their gonna trade Granger because he's in the last year of his deal but the only question is who they'll go after. Rudy Gay for more scoring, Pau Gasol for a legit sized pf and center when they need to go small or Eric Gordon for perimeter help.

:smh:Granger ain't getting traded man. There's no trade that works.

And EJ is a ball dominating guard who's also injury prone. Gasol is an overpaid bum outside of boards and has no place in the O. The roster is set. Only person that'll probably get moved is Copeland for future cap space.

What if LeBron took 30 shots a game?

By Tom Haberstroh | November 16, 2013 2:45:11 AM PST

MIAMI -- In Friday's win over the Dallas Mavericks, James racked up 39 points on just 18 shots from the floor. In fact, that's the most points he's ever scored in a game with 18 field goal attempts or fewer. Needless to say, he's making the most of his opportunities.

James' hyper-efficient shooting performance comes on the heels of Toronto Raptors forward Rudy Gay shooting 37 field goal attempts in an overtime loss to the Houston Rockets on Monday. Gay totaled just 29 points in more than twice as many attempts.

The days of James taking 30 shots, much less 37 shots, are long gone. Actually, James has never had 37 attempts in a game in his NBA career. He's reached the 30-shot plateau just twice in a Heat uniform. Over that same span, James has seen other players shoot 30-plus far more -- Kobe Bryant (14 times), Carmelo Anthony (12), Kevin Durant (four) and James' Friday opponent Monta Ellis (four). So far this season, Anthony, Gay and Kyrie Irving have each shot over 30 times a game at least once.

After Friday's game, James was asked about his reaction when he sees other players shooting 30 -- or as much as 37 -- attempts in a game.

"Um ...," James pondered for a few seconds as if he was calculating something in his head.

"If you give me 37 shots in a game, I'd have 60 ... 70," James said.

Laughter ensued from the reporters circle. So James elaborated.

"I had [almost] 40 now with 18 shots, I mean ... If you give me 37 shots in a game, I'd put up 60. Easy," James said.

Preposterous answer, right?

On second thought, perhaps James was doing the math in his head.

James has scored 243 points this season on 144 field goal attempts. That's a scoring rate of 1.6875 points per field goal attempt. Multiply that times 37 and what do you get?

62.4 points.

Maybe not so preposterous after all.

Best team in NBA, Bulls record might be in danger....

Roy Hibbert collects 24 points, 8 blocks as Pacers move to 9-0
Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana's Roy Hibbert had the perfect knockout combination Friday night.

On offense, he made all but two shots. On defense, he protected the rim. At the free throw line, he couldn't miss and no matter what the Bucks tried to stop the former All-Star center, nothing worked.

Hibbert finished with season-highs of 24 points and eight blocks and added 10 rebounds to lead unbeaten Indiana past Milwaukee 104-77 -- the Pacers' most lopsided rout in a 9-0 start.

"We have expectations and we want to win," Hibbert said. "We want to play deep, deep into the playoffs. You gain confidence with your teammates when we're all on the same page and we all have one goal. Some guys on this team before were just trying to get a paycheck and go home and then chilling on the beach and sip mojitos or something like that. That's not us. "

Hibbert was referring to the teams he played on when he first arrived in Indy.

There's no doubt that philosophy has changed. On Friday, the Pacers followed the same blue-collar script they've used to win their first nine.

Milwaukee had a season-low point total, finished well below its season average of 93.7 points, and shot just 34.1 percent against the league's No. 1 defense. It's the fourth time Indiana has held an opponent to 80 or fewer points this season and it's the second time this week.

Now, after becoming the first team in the league to start 9-0 since Dallas in 2002-03, Indiana has a chance to reach even more milestones.

The defending Central Division champs head to Chicago on Saturday with a chance to become the 14th team in league history to go 10-0, and they can break the longest winning streak in the franchise's NBA history. Indiana also won nine straight from Nov. 2-22 in 2002. Another win also would put them on the precipice of the longest winning streak in Pacers history (11), which stretches all the way back to 1972-73, when they were still in the ABA.

About the only bad move coach Frank Vogel made Friday was pulling Hibbert early rather than allowing him to try and become the second Pacers player this week to post a triple-double.

Hibbert, true to form, didn't care. He'd rather beat Chicago anyway for the second time in 10 days and at least lock up a tie in the season series against their fiercest division rival.

"You know what? I look at the bigger picture. We have Chicago tomorrow, might as well just get a little bit a rest," Hibbert said. "A triple-double would have been great, but one of these times, everything's going to line-up, the stars, moon, sun, everything's going to line up and I'll have one of those."

So Hibbert focused on his job.

While Indiana's top scorer Paul George struggled to get open in the first half, Hibbert scorched the Bucks for 14 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in just 15 minutes. After making halftime adjustments, the Bucks still couldn't stop the 7-foot-2 center, whom Vogel called the early front-runner for defensive player of the year.

And this time, Hibbert was just as proficient on the offensive end. He knocked down 8 of 10 shots from the field, made all eight of his free throws and dominated the matchup with feisty Zaza Pachulia, who played with a sore right foot.

"We threw what we had at him, but it didn't seem to affect him at all," Bucks coach Larry Drew said. "You try to take something away and you give something else up. They played well. That team's playing really well."

George finished with 22 points, 17 in the second half. Lance Stephenson, who had his first triple-double Monday night, had 11 points and four rebounds during a game in which the Pacers fell behind twice in the first quarter, for just 64 seconds.

Injury-riddled Milwaukee (2-6) has now dropped four straight. O.J. Mayo led the Bucks with 20 points, and his only teammates to reach double figures were Khris Middleton and Gary Neal, who each had 11.

They just didn't have a chance against the league's hottest team.

Coming off of a three-day break, Indiana started sluggishly, then used an 11-2 run to put Milwaukee in a 21-14 hole. The Pacers never looked back.

Indiana closed the first quarter on an 8-3 spurt to make it 31-21, extended the lead to 53-37 at the half and then pulled away in the third quarter when George accounted for six points in a 7-2 spurt and George and Hibbert accounted for all seven points in a 7-0 spurt to make it 68-53.

Milwaukee never got closer than 11 again.

"Every game could be the difference between home-court advantage and not having home-court advantage," Vogel said. "It doesn't matter. We're on a mission and we're trying to put ourselves in best possible position come playoff time. "

Game notes

Indiana has already beaten all four of its Central Division foes. ... Milwaukee played without Caron Butler, Carlos Delfino, Ersan Ilyasova and Larry Sanders. ... The Bucks have lost five straight in Indy.

Josh Smith: Hawks Showed No Interest In Free Agency
Nov 18, 2013 11:13 PM EST

Josh Smith confirmed on Monday that the Atlanta Hawks did not meet with him in free agency and did not offer contract to re-sign him.

“No, there wasn’t,” Smith told 92.9 FM Atlanta, when asked if there was a contract offer. “During free agency, during that period, there were a lot of guys out in L.A. that were meeting with various teams. I was one of those guys. That’s where I work out in the summertime as well. The only time I saw the Hawks during free agency was when they came to one of my workouts just to say hello. I think they were meeting with Dwight Howard that day. They never came in or sat down with me during the free agency period to offer me anything.”

Smith, the long-time Hawks player and local product, ended up signing a four-year, $54 million contract with the Pistons in July. The forward returns to Atlanta Wednesday for his first game at Philips Arena as a visitor.

Smith, who is top 10 in most of the Hawks’ all-time statistical categories after nine years with the organization, said he has no hard feelings.

“Once you take your personal feelings out of the situation you understand that it is a business, more so than anything,” Smith said. “You kind of are going to set yourself up for failure. It’s probably an organization that probably wanted to go in a different direction and I understand that. I moved on for the better of my situation and I’m pretty sure they felt the same way.”

NBA News and Rumors: Omer Asik headed to Dallas Mavericks?

Larry Seely | Nov 23, 2013

Listen to this article (by ReadSpeaker)

I might be early in the 2013-14 NBA season, but already a number of trade rumors have hit social media and the biggest name rumored on the move this week is center Omer Asik of the Houston Rockets.

Houston - For the second time in the last few months, the 27 year-old has asked for a trade and with the big man playing under twenty minutes of action in the last two games, many basketball experts are predicting a trade in the next few days.
Bill Ingram of Hoopsworld has reported that the Dallas mavericks are looking at making a move for the seven-footer. The potential deal has veteran Shawn Marion and 21 year-old point guard Shane Larkin headed to Houston and Asik going to the Mavs.
One big reason this deal could happen, Houston needs to get some positive energy in the locker room and the longer the young center stays around, the more chances for damage to team chemistry is possible.
Dallas is in big need of some younger talent and the Mavs don't really have a legitimate NBA center on their roster. Marion and Larkin would strengthen the Rockets bench and give them more versatility in the back court, giving both teams a boost for the rest of the season and possibly into the playoffs.

Report: Knicks Could Consider Allan Houston As Head Coaching Successor
Dec 04, 2013 2:05 AM EST

The New York Knicks could promote Allan Houston to head coach if the team is not able to turn the season around under Mike Woodson, according to a report.

George Karl went on record recently saying he would not want to join the Knicks' "hell for a million dollars."

“Say what you want about Jim Dolan but he’s one of about eight owners who is willing to spend money to compete for a championship,” said one current NBA head coach. “There are too many owners who are only in it to make money.”

Houston is currently an executive under Steve Mills, who returned to the Knicks -- replacing Glen Grunwald -- before the start of training camp.

Sources: Raptors Have Discussed Three-Team Deal Acquiring Jeff Teague
Feb 17, 2014 4:26 PM EST

The New York Knicks are attempting to resume trade talks with the Toronto Raptors on Kyle Lowry, according to sources.

The Knicks are offering packages including Iman Shumpert, Raymond Felton and Beno Udrih, sources say.

New York is reluctant to include Tim Hardaway Jr. or a future first round pick. The Raptors almost certainly will require one of those two assets to trade Lowry directly to the Knicks.

"It comes down to, can they talk themselves into getting rid of a first-rounder or Hardaway Jr. for Lowry," one league source said.

League sources say a three-team deal has also been discussed in which Jeff Teague would end up with the Raptors, while Shumpert gets routed to the Atlanta Hawks and Lowry to the Knicks. Another trade scenario has the Knicks acquiring Teague. Those conversations have only been preliminary.

Norris Cole Receiving Significant Inquiries As Heat Refuse To Deal Him

Norris-Cole.png

As a rising talent on a rookie-scale contract, Heat point guard Norris Cole is drawing a bevy of interested teams pursuing Miami management about a potential package to acquire him, league sources told RealGM.

For every call, the Heat have offered stiff rejections, sources said, and value Cole as one of their best young assets. Pat Riley traded for Cole in the 2011 NBA Draft and the 6-foot-2 guard swiftly emerged as a contributing reserve, boasting a consistent midrange jumper, defensive ferocity and a keen ability to run a team.

Cole has one season left on his rookie deal, and most personnel around the NBA view him as a starting-caliber point guard.

Within the Heat’s back-to-back NBA championship last postseason, Cole averaged over six points on 48 percent shooting – including consecutive 18-point games in the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Chicago Bulls.

With averages of 7.6 points and 2.3 assists this season, Cole has started six of 51 games and played a career-high 25.7 minutes per game, providing reliability behind Mario Chalmers.

Cole was a 28th overall draft pick out of Cleveland State.

The Knicks let Lin sign with the Houston Rockets in the 2012 offseason.

New York has been searching for trade possibilities at point guard.

Lin's contract expires after the 14-15 season, which preserves their cap flexibility for 2015.

The New York Knicks are active ahead of the trade deadline and Carmelo Anthony anticipates being consulted in the process.

“I’m pretty sure they would bring it to me,’’ Anthony said at the morning shootaround Tuesday. “They would keep me up to date on what’s going on. As far as making decisions, that’s their job. I’m pretty sure they will keep me informed. What’s about to happen and what’s going to happen.”

The Knicks plan on not acquiring a player that has a contract that would take up cap space in 2015. The Knicks want to sell Anthony on the prospect of adding a second superstar such as Kevin Love in 2015.

“It’s Tuesday, and I haven’t heard anything as far as trades,’’ Anthony said. “As far as today, nothing’s happening. I haven’t heard anything. We’re planning on moving forward.’’
