16-year-old turns down harvard to attend famu.

My nephew was at FAMU after being homeschooled, he enrolled in his early teens, almost finished then started at MIT.

Not super un-common for FAMU, which is odd because that school is full of retards & thieves.

Congrats to the young dude. However, there are a lot of dumb people who have Ivy League degrees who are making a lot more money due to the "brand name" of the degree that was earned in the Ivy League along with the connections they made while attending these schools.

I remember going on an interview and getting shitted on because I didn't go to the right HBCU. Jewish cat asked me why I didn't go to say a Morehouse or Howard. Funny thing was that my HBCU's pre-med program was probably the best offered at any HBCU. Even better than some major universities.

Then you should have been able to articulate that in the interview.

It may not be "the be all and end all" but graduating from an ivy league school make a BIG difference. If nothing else, he will meet fellow students with successful families. If you think it doesn't matter, you're fooling yourself. Turning down Harvard or FAMU, on its face, is foolish. Maybe there are some other issues like not wanting to leave home may be a factor, but all things being equal, that's like turning down a Bentley for a Taurus.

:hmm:

Now, I know you're trolling.

Im just saying. Was his SAT score perfect? Nope, not even close? Is graduating high school 1 year early that amazing? Nah, dont think so.

Hell, Im trying to figure out if I can get my child skipped a grade now because the work they are doing isnt challenging enough.

Wow!!! People are buggin in this thread. The truth is nobody knows why he made the decision he did. I'm just happy he is in someone's school and is going to excel. And he is getting it all paid for. Hey if some of you all aren't, I'm proud of dude. I wish him nothing but success going forward.

This story sounds like it was written by someone in FAMU's marketing department......happy for the kid and all, but shit, at least know some facts if you going to write a story that makes the kid look like he shit on a bunch of other schools to go to FAMU.

Although Alabama and Penn St are NOT Ivy League caliber schools Stanford, overall, is stronger than any school in the United States outside of Harvard and Princeton.

Famu will offer no challenge for this kid. I think more or less, he wants to impress his mentor who was famu alum. I think he will succeed either way. good luck to him.

I don't know what he intends to do later in life, but if he is going to be a lawyer, this might be a good move to go to FAMU for undegrad and possibly go to Harvard for law. Ivy league Law schools will scramble for high achieving minorities who did very well in undergrad, regardless of where they went and shower them with an insane amount of scholarships. It happened to my friend with whom I applied for law school.

HSBU's will do it too. TSU law gave a free ride to some American Indian kids in my year.

:yes::yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

And this applies to pretty much ANY post-baccalaureate degree.

If he's in science major, he'll go for free wherever he goes.

These other responses just affirm the fact that BGOL is full uninformed haters.

I upped this thread, because dude did an interview, and stated his reason. Btw, Harvard DID NOT offer him a full ride. Ga. Tech was his first choice, but they didn't offer him a full scholly. He chose FAMU mainly because it was close to home.

Many of his top choices were either too far away or did not offer him a full ride. Harvard and Stanford, for example, offered him some money but not a full scholarship. Cornell and Kettering offered full scholarships but were too far away for his liking. Georgia Tech, his No. 1 choice, did not offer a full scholarship.

 That clarifies everything now.

He will be majoring in Engineering at the FAMU/FSU school of Engineering.

Trust me he will not have any issue what so ever getting any job he wishes after graduation. He will also not have any issue getting into any graduate school he wishes to attend after graduation.

Ga. Tech was throwing offers to us Tuskegee University Engineering grads after we graduated. A fully paid scholarship to FAMU/FSU school of Engineering he would have to be crazy to have turned that down.

Also, keep in mind that not 10 years ago FAMU was the leading recruiter of black merit scholars above Harvard, Yale and the rest. When the president of a university talks to you face to face about attending there university that carries a whole lot of weight.

That and his whole family like mine has been graduating from HBCU's so he knows what to expect from one...

I dont get some people in our community obsession with "Full ride"...It's like people plan to live on this earth without ever having debt:smh:

Anything WORTH having on this earth will cost something...but I guess parents just dont raise their kids with this kind of thinking now.

I am raising my kids to have the grades to get into FAMU with the money we put aside for college as well as scholarship money.

That way they will not have the student loans me and there mother have. When they graduate they will be free of major debt and have a solid income, and ain't nothing wrong with that plan!!!

Not sure if admitting that FAMU was his 4th choice school was the best idea.

And still I'm not understanding the point of applying to 45 different schools. If Cornell and Kettering offered full rides "but were too far away", why even apply if you already know how far away they were?

Nevertheless congratulations and good luck!
