16-year-old turns down harvard to attend famu.

His parents went to Fort Valley State...the shittiest college in Georgia. No surprise they influenced him to go to FAMU over the other schools.
They probably have built in inferiority complexes that the kid inherited despite his academic abilities...he is not a whiz kid by any means.
Hell anybody can have a kid test well and get skipped a couple of grades.

:hmm: and how many did you skip

Ur on bgol although you graduated in 92' which means it was a horrible decision. I can guarantee if you went to Harvard you most likely wouldn't be on here.

Where did you graduate from :hmm:

Dude, this is a stupid post. We've got lawyers, Feds, etc. on here. Just because they post here, doesn't mean....you know what? Nevermind. :smh:

he also turned down prominent Ivy League institutions such as the University of Alabama (NO), Stanford University (NO), Pennsylvania State University (NO) and Harvard University to become a Rattler.[/b]

This story sounds like it was written by someone in FAMU's marketing department......happy for the kid and all, but shit, at least know some facts if you going to write a story that makes the kid look like he shit on a bunch of other schools to go to FAMU.

Sakem is the resident dumbass. he was the only one to land on my ignore list because his posts about finance were so dumb (the industry i work in). stop entertaining him.

16? That's all?

Prodigy? At 16?

That's nice and all but it's really not that amazing.

:hmm:

You dumb crab ass nigga. Academic maturity is one thing, social maturity is another. If you took time to read the article and not be a dickhead. You would've read that he was reading at a 9th grade level and doing basic Algebra at 4. Obviously his parents understood that he needed a more normal social upbringing, so he doesn't become the next Bobby Fisher or some weirdo recluse.:smh:

There's nothing interesting about this kid. Nothing. And I have a strange feeling he actually learned algebra in the 4th grade but the writer fucked up somehow.

besides, look at his doucebag fake ivy-league jacket. Everything from this article says miscalculation and immaturity.

Is that right? Tell us why it's not. BTW, what were you doing at 16? Go ahead an show up lil dude:hmm:

Actually, I'm not comparing myself to that dude but I was in college at 17, just depends on where your birthday falls. If the kid gets skipped once, and teachers can make that happen for their kids, he's in college at 16. The kid really should have taken his chances at Harvard though, it could mean the difference between starting work at an entry-level position or going straight into upper management.

Have you gone to college

Obviously not, because you know the importance of a graduate degree, and you can easily attend any school for undergrad and then go to an Ivy League for grad. A undergrad degree really isn't shit, no matter where you got it from. You would need more than that to be management

Who gave him that stupid advice??? Probably the same guy who told LeBron to produce something called The Decision.

Florida A&M University (FAMU) freshman, Ralph Jones Jr., a 16 year old from Atlanta, Ga. turned down offers to Howard University, Fort Valley State University and Morehouse College to attend FAMU. In addition to these institutions, he also turned down prominent Ivy League institutions such as the University of Alabama, Stanford University, Pennsylvania State University and Harvard University to become a Rattler.

Fuck the author and his elitist spin...good job to the young brother.

:smh: dude take your ass to harvard and don't leave until you have your masters degree and your set for life

I wish I could go to harvard

Sooner or later people are going to realize that college rankings dont mean SHIT in terms of getting a job in your field. Just an FYI I have a Howard degree and have 2 GT grads and a UNC grad working UNDER me. You know why.. because neither of them had experience on their resume and I did an intership with a F-500 company. Yes Harvard will be nice to have on your resume but please stop thinking that shit is going to guarantee you success in life.

And to the person that pointed out Bill Gates & Zuckerburg, I guess you didnt realize that both of them dropped out and neither actually got a degree. Ill even do you one better, look up black executives that work for fortune 500 companies and tell me which schools the majority of them graduated from. Ill wait.

Man please go ahead with that bs. This kid, won't have any issues getting his fair share of opportunities. The micro economic course offered at harvard, don't use any disparate text books different from other academic institutions. Harvard is a fucking brand. But this kid is also a brand, and if he continues to build, leverage, and protect it, he'll open up many doors for himself like his ivy contemporaries. Don't get me wrong, I understand the name value and privileges that come with Harvard, but it ain't the be all end all...

:hmm: and how many did you skip

I tested well enough in gifted to be promoted from 2nd to 4th grade...I was reading on a 9th grade level in 5th grade.

My point was that any kid has the potential to be skipped a grade or two...if they have the proper nuturing like myself and this kid.

Doesn't make us geniuses. :hmm:

Good for young dude.

Univ. of Alabama is Ivy League? Didn't know that.
They cunningly, or shamefully, wrote that paragraph that way.

ga tech ain't got shit on harvard, thats one of the best business and law schools in the country
You have to look at the lanes the colleges are in you are comparing. Harvard is not showing Georgia Tech ANYTHING in the math, computer, and science department PERIOD.

uhhh he only did 2100 out of 2400. he'll be okay but not a star.
:hmm:

a black 16 year old turning down a couple colleges isnt worthy of a thread nor a press release.

Now, I know you're trolling.

It may not be "the be all and end all" but graduating from an ivy league school make a BIG difference. If nothing else, he will meet fellow students with successful families. If you think it doesn't matter, you're fooling yourself. Turning down Harvard or FAMU, on its face, is foolish. Maybe there are some other issues like not wanting to leave home may be a factor, but all things being equal, that's like turning down a Bentley for a Taurus.

I have a BS in Computer Science and an MBA is Information Systems. I have seen a lot of folks come out of Ivy League schools and get on the fast track with just a bachelors degree but you think what you want.

This thread is proof positive why a college education from ANYWHERE ... shit, East Donkey Tech, whatever, is essential. :smh:

Its all about opportunity, timing and/or who you know. You could be in the military get your education from some 'more like high school' college, but if you happen to run into a situation where the hiring manager was in the same branch of the military you may get hooked up. Shoot, the federal government hooks up disabled vets like crazy. To me, this is one of the biggest benefits of being in the military.

I think the dude just wanted to be a big fish in a small pond to be honest. He'll be able to have extra money throughout school and succeeding at the school will be alot less stressful. Plus, he'll be I believe closer to home.

This may be true, but if it came down to an employer choosing a person for a position and it's between a FAMU grad and a Harvard grad, who do you think will get the greater consideration? *Guarantee* you, that hiring manager will stop reading the resume when he sees Harvard University, and use the FAMU resume for basketball practice.

It depends on who is hiring and for what.

I guess you're right.
