‘Rampage’ injured; Machida gets shot at Evans

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson needs surgery on his jaw and won’t be able to fight Rashad Evans as planned on May 23 at UFC 98, UFC president Dana White said.

White said Wednesday that he would give the title shot instead to unbeaten Lyoto Machida.

Jackson said at the post-fight news conference for UFC 96 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio – in which he won a close decision from Keith Jardine to earn the title shot – that he wasn’t sure he could make it because his jaw was sore.

White said Wednesday that Jackson was examined on Tuesday in Las Vegas and it was discovered he had torn ligaments in his jaw. He also has a hyperextension of his left elbow.

Jackson will have surgery next week and will not be allowed contact for at least five weeks following.

“Rampage deserved the (title shot), but this is an awesome main event,” White said of Evans-Machida, which matches two unbeaten fighters. “A lot of people were complaining to me that Lyoto should have had the shot first. I think it’s going to be a great fight and Rampage can go get himself healthy.”

Evans is 13-0-1, with only a draw against Tito Ortiz marring his record. Machida is 14-0.

Jackson said Saturday that sparring partner Hector “Sick Dog” Ramirez had hit him with an uppercut several days prior to his win over Wanderlei Silva at UFC 92 on Dec. 27 in Las Vegas, injuring his jaw.

Jackson said he didn’t tell White about the injury. Jackson went on to knock out Silva in the first round of that fight, then almost immediately went back into training for the bout with Jardine.

The UFC had planned to make Jackson-Evans the main event of UFC 100, but changed plans on Saturday after learning interim heavyweight champion Frank Mir would be unable to train adequately for a rematch with heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar because of arthroscopic surgery on his knee.

White and matchmaker Joe Silva then decided to move Evans’ title defense to UFC 98, with the proviso that Jackson would get the bout if he won and felt he could make it and Machida would get it if Jackson felt he could not.

It would have been an unusually grueling pace for a top-tier fighter, with three high-level bouts in less than five months. Jackson, though, told White on Saturday: “You know I have your back” and promised he would fight if he could physically do it.

“It’s not the end of the world because we have a great fight to put on,” White said. “It shows you the kind of guy that Rampage is – that he was willing to sacrifice and take this fight because we needed him. You don’t forget things like that.

“But we’re lucky because we have a great fight to put in there and we don’t have problems.”

damn, yeah dude is undefeated also. Was hoping to see Rampage and Rashaad go at it though.

Dana White is pimping these dudes and they cant see it.

As a "casual" fan, I can see it though.

Rampage would of had 3 fights in 5 months is insane

They would never let that shit go down in boxing.

Its not even the fights, but its the training that becomes dangerous to your body

plus you can over train and that isn't good either

Dana = Pimp

luckily for Rampage he has an injury, but he needs to stop bending over backwards for this dude

"Three high-level bouts in less than five months?" GTFOH. This injury is a blessing for Rampage. That was just too much for any body to step up to. Some time off, healing & training will get him ready for who ever wins between Evans-Machida.

The problem with boxing today is that fighters dont fight enough...

Look at the records of early champs they usually had over 100 fights...today most champs have only 20 to 30 fights by the time they retire...

3 fights in 5 months is a lot but not overly so

I think everyone realizes it.

Right now UFC has no real competition and he locks people up to long term contracts at a certain salary. Gives little bonuses for knockouts, blah blah. A lot of boxing trainers make more money than UFC fighters, while Dana gets rich having one pay per view event a month.

And look at people like Tito Ortiz, what other outlet does he have making money :dunno: Join all of these USFL MMA companies and hope they don't fail. Josh Koschek was basically forced to stay with UFC.

I remember dude used to brag about how he used to have to have a whole card of quality fights and named fighters, unlike boxing. Look at his past few cards, it's been BJ Penn/GSP and garbage. Rampage and Forest and garbage. Rampage and Jardine and garbage. Dudes becoming just like Don King.

RAMPAGE PROBABLY IS FIGHTING SO MUCH TO GET HIS MONEY UP. HE'S GOING TO NEED IT TO PAY SOMEBODY (A LAWYER/THE COURTS/DANA WHITE) TO KEEP HIS ASS OUT OF JAIL FROM WHEN HE TOOK THE POLICE ONA HIGH SPEED CHASE AND ALL THAT BULLSHIT AFTER HE LOST TO FORREST GRIFFIN.

bruh, most of those fighters who had more than 100+ fights died early

boxers should only fight twice a year in my opinion

shit just look how their speech changes after just 30+ fights

all them shots to the head isnt good

and the body shots may be even worse on the body

peace

After rampage lost his belt he said he wanted to fight alot more.

fighters want to fight

thats their d.n.a

but somebody, like the president, has to tell them to chill for awhile.......not exploit them for ufc 1,098

I believe the bests fights are when both competitors are at equal strength

if they wouldve fought in May, Evans had a huge advantage

he'll probably win that fight anyway, but that still isnt cool

There is also some shit with Ken Shamrock and steroid use. They say he is suspended. But anyways Quinton just came off of a fight so it's understandable that he needs time off.

Everybody knows Machida is a great fighter but there is something I notice about him that others don't: his ability to take hard strikes. I have observed many of his fights especially his one with Sokojou and his offensive and defensive(as far as well manuvering goes) is good. But he is not good at taking hard strikes. That's his weakness.

He has been so used to not getting hit that much. So what happens when you get somebody in there with him that can catch up with him and strike?

Let's see, put somebody in their with the stiking KO power of Chuck Liddell and the wrestling ability of Randy Cutour. Machida would be in big big trouble.

But Rashad better study Machida very, very, very good. He can't afford to be cocky with this one. Watch all of his videos. This is going to be his toughest opponent. Leroy Dibiase, W7, Alex W, and others can sure Co sign.

This will be a true test of Evans' skills. Machida is a very elusive fighter. His evasive maneuvers are fantastic. Rashad is going to have find a way to trap him, if not he is going to be baited to death. You don't want Machida to make you chase him.

It is when fighting ELITE competition. You need the time off. It's not like they're fighting bums every other month

Re: ‘Rampage’ injured; Machida gets shot at Evans

Say what you want about Dana White but he stood by Rampage after all of this............. And not just stood by him but said unequivocally that Rampage would have his and the UFC's full support.

Jackson, the driver of a lifted, gray pick-up truck left crashed cars, shredded tires and sparks in his wake this afternoon when he led police on a short pursuit from the southbound 55 freeway exit onto Newport Boulevard where he hit at least three cars, police said.

The driver hit two cars at 19th Street and Newport Boulevard, then drove away at about 1:13 p.m., Lt. Paul Dondero said. A Costa Mesa police officer saw the driver southbound approaching 17th Street and tried to pull him over, police said. There, he hit at least one more car before continuing to run, now heading south toward the Balboa Peninsula, Dondero said. Some time after that, the truck blew a tire but continued to drive on its rims, Dondero said.

Jackson eventually gave up, pulled over and was arrested, police said. The whole chase lasted about five minutes, Dondero said.

Jake LaMotta is still going strong and so did Carmen Basilio, who died at an old age.

It all depends. MMA fighters will seem to suffer more from arthritis than brain damage.

Ehhhh, I think it's sort of a pimp and hoe relationship like alex said. Rampage is one of his best hoes. He can make money off him. Fans already perceive it as a violent sport, and aren't going to demand for the fighters to act a certain way. Nobody cares how many wrestlers die or how big they get, but baseball players better not take steroids.

He stood by Chris Leben for a minute too. He fucked with Tito Ortiz even though they didn't get along, because he benefited.

rampage is white's cash cow. whatever money he spent on rampages legal fees, he has already made back x 5. as long as rampage brings in the money, he could rabbit fuck a hole in latoya jacksons plastic face and dana white wouldnt give a fuck

I agree with almost everything you said expect weak fight cards.
I think the more you follow the reality show (The Ultimate Fighter) and undercards in general you get to learn about the up and coming fighters who dont have a big name yet but are entertaining fighters. UFC 96 was a good example of that.

But yeah its sick how these guys are getting underpaid while the Fertitta brothers (UFC owners)who are billionares are making a killing.

Better for Rampage, I don't think he would have had enough rest and time off to prepare for Shad.

I think Rashad takes Machida. Machida hasn't fought anyone as quick and elusive as Rashad. I think Rashads wrestling may prove key here, but I see the first few rounds with both guys bouncing around trying to feel each other out. Rashad likes to dance and wait for the right time to strike, Machica likes to get in and out and likes to counter strike too. If it doesn't go to the ground could be a boring fight for the first couple rounds or so. I see it heating up.

Only thing is Rashad has the edge in explosiveness and knock out power so he can win a fight at any time. The Silva KO aside, Machida is not really a knockout guy. He normally wins by decision. I don't see him taking Rashad down, and if Rashad happens to be losing the stand up, I see him going for the takedown and GnP. Easier said than done, but I think Rashad wins this fight.
