I rather pay for quality. The old saying is true, "You get what you pay for". I don't need free cd's, software etc etc. I paid for Norton's 2009 edition. I gladly pay for what I want and need.

ionno bruh. just because you're paying for it does not mean its better. that's like saying you wont get Ubuntu because its free. we're not talkin ford pinto vs maybach benz here. in the technology world free does not always mean mediocre. the software i listed speak for themselves in terms of quality and that's why i, and alot of others, use them. they're quality products and the manufacturers put them out for free.

the notion that paying for something means you're getting a quality product is misleading and wrong in the internet age

That guy doesn't respond well to facts or common sense. Just a heads up...

Anybody know which of these might work on my "Windows 2000" that I have on my laptop? Avira was fine for my up to date XP, but I should have a lil sumthin sumpin for my LT that I only use for browsing while I'm on the road.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.5 will support windows 2000 and up.
here is the website that shows the platforms it supports

(props on the thread)nod32 + outpostfriewall + avg free edition = best combo, btw...that norton is a memory hog :smh: on vista

That's weird. I just stopped using Norton Internet Security 2009 a lil while ago on Vista. Lightest setup I've used in a while. Avira has better detection though.

PCMag.com said:
This is definitely the slimmest, most unobtrusive Norton ever. Its protection is top-notch where it counts, though antispam and parental controls are still weak. As the best all-around security suite yet (I'll be installing it myself), it's our new Editors' Choice.

Seriously though, someone should make this a sticky in the tech forum. I've come back to this thread no less than three times to check on shit.

Again to the OP, good fucking drop bruh.

i slept on avira.........

Yea Avira + Comodo + malwarebytes + common sense is pretty much a standard safe setup.

In terms of just AV I think Avira is the best thing out right now. The list creator, the group that run the security software evaluations I posted and a buncha folks in the thread seem to agree.

this is the definition of fort knox. assuming you have a hardware firewall which i do have in addition. light on the resources, heavy on the voodoo for whatever tries to penetrate

Props to the OP!
I just got a Rootkit that Avast couldn't handle and it wouldnt let me install almost all of the software under Anti-malware scanners, AV-Scanners, & Rootkit-detection.
Luckily, I was able to install Hitman Pro and it took care of it!
Gonna switch from Avast to Avira and see how that works out.

i never used hitman pro but i like to see whats working for people. never know when i'll need a backup.......just in case

Good stuff. Especially great for charging people a premium to 'fix' their pc with free software. $24.99 for standard cleanup and maintenance, $34.99 for virus/malware removal, etc. Not actual prices, but you get the point.
