Mays was the perfect baseball player

The United States Army drafted Mays in 1952 and he subsequently missed most of the 1952 season and all of the 1953 season. Despite the Korean War, Mays spent most of his time in the army playing baseball at Fort Eustis, Va.[24] Mays missed about 266 games due to military service....

Batting average .302
Home runs 660
Hits 3,283
Runs batted in 1,903
338 Stolen Bases
24 All Star appearances
2 MVP's (probably got beat on a few of these)

...And the numbers still don't tell the full story... especially in the field.

Imagine if he was on the juice.

yeah dont consider him to be the greatest(give it to the babe even as a bosox fan). but the strides he and Larry Doby made were uncomparable.

Happy Birthday!!!

I saw a Bay Area cat posted about the greatest baseball player ever. I ran through my mind the individuals worthy of that title...

...and I deduced that the thread was about Willie Mays. So, that either means he is the G.O.A.T, or JD Walker is a biased Giants fan.

And he went to the war

That's like 3 seasons.

He wouldd have had 800+ Hr

He missed 1.75 seasons at the start of his career (after his rookie year and part of his sophomore one). He started hitting homers seriously AFTER he came back. Considering a natural progression, he likely lost some 50-60 homers, and NOT 140+ plus.

 agreed

This guy left baseball to go to the war for 2 years. Imagine what his numbers would look like if he didnt go to the war.

He is the greatest all around baseball player ever.

Happy birthday Mr. Mays!

I never really understood what he went through as a player and as a person until I read his biography that came out about 2 years ago...he is a remarkable man.

stop googling !!!

Ted williams, mickey mantle, joe dimaggio, and hank arron said willie mays is the best player they have ever scene in there lives.

Ted williams even said roberto clemente could of been as well if he wouldnt of died in that plane crash.

i will say there was some negro league players who were better, and they never got the chance to show there talent in mlb.

Happy birthday to an American icon....

I have always been amazed at how the great ones performed despite the added pressures.

Hank Aaron needing an armed guard...his family protected, the everyday slights:smh:

These bitches today, like Manny Ramirez:smh:taking weeks off because their feeling got hurt....

The Aaron,Mays,Clemente generation was truly the greatest.

I brought this up in the 'build a statue for Bill Russell' thread...athletes back then really stood for something, equality, civil rights...

Whereas now they fall for anything...drugs,HOs,decadence...in fact all the 7 deadly sins.

Cut it out. That's total bullshit. :smh:

stop googling !!!

Stop ranting and try to concentrate on the FACTS!!! They have nothing to do with "google," and stop using that as an excuse for not knowing shit.

Ted williams, mickey mantle, joe dimaggio, and hank arron said willie mays is the best player they have ever scene in there lives.

What does that have to do with the bullshit about him hitting 800+ homers??? Williams lost nearly 5 years IN HIS PRIME to the service and Dimaggio 3 years.

Ted williams even said roberto clemente could of been as well if he wouldnt of died in that plane crash.

That's nonsense. Clemente died at age 38. He'd already played most of his career. He was a great player, but no one would say he was the greatest.

Stop babbling and try to stay on point.

Ted williams even said roberto clemente could of been as well if he wouldnt of died in that plane crash.
Clemente was near the end of his career when he died, he couldn't have done too much to improve his legacy at that point.

Cut it out. That's total bullshit. :smh:

Really??....

I'm sure today you could get Floyd Mayweather,Michael Jordan and Adrian Peterson all together to protest something controversial:rolleyes:like calling for a boycott of the olympics.

You DO realize that the vast majority of players weren't doing shit back then, right??? Those players in the photo were the most outspoken. And WHY would you compare the Civil Rights Era (when LOTS of people were taking stands) with TODAY??? It's silly. There are no CAUSES of that magnitude.

Cut it out. That's total bullshit. :smh:

you dont know shit about the game of baseball.

you google stats to talk about on the board.

personally dick head i never said anything about him hitting 800 homeruns. but i do believe he would of been homerun leader, and not Arron if it wasnt for the war.

With that said he is the greatest all around baseball player to play the game.

you dont know shit about the game of baseball.

I've forgotten more than a kid like you will ever know about baseball.

you google stats to talk about on the board.

Unlike you, I was born long before "Google" and don't need it to state the obvious. Some of us actually acquire and retain information in other ways. On the other hand, dummies like you SHOULD use "Google," just to get your facts right. There's nothing wrong with providing accurate information, by any means necessary. Only a child would think there's something wrong with getting it right.

personally dick head i never said anything about him hitting 800 homeruns.

I was responding to the person who did say that, and then you put in your own two cents.

but i do believe he would of been homerun leader, and not Arron if it wasnt for the war.

Right, if he somehow managed to hit 96 homers in 1.75 years (after hitting just 20 as a rookie).

With that said he is the greatest all around baseball player to play the game.

That's a good bet.

In terms of pure numbers and only including the MAJOR LEAGUES... Mr. Mays is right up there. However, Babe Ruth would have made the Hall of Fame as a pitcher, much less a hitter. And Ted Williams did miss like three or more prime years (WWII and the Korean). Of course Hank Aaron didn't just hit 755 home runs for no reason. He seems to get skipped over a lot.

In terms of OVERALL baseball Satchel Paige may have been the best pitcher ever at any level.

Lastly, my boy Barry Bonds. Fug all that bullshit!

Just my opinion... I know you cats couldn't wait.

if i could spend time with have lunch or whatever with one famous person from the past or present the say hey kid would be my choice hands down.

Mays would have hit 140 homers if he hadn't missed the service.

Believe that plehboi.

Also stop bringin up those cacs.

We took over baseball.
