"I started having to work to keep my balance, and I wasn't liking it all," Jones said Wednesday. "So for the last four or five years, I had been looking for something or somebody that could work on reversing the effects that the punches had on my brain."

Pitiful. :smh:Link with article and video: http://www.wtae.com/sports/26819931/detail.html

Damn not Roy! Man he should have retired in 04' before that second Antonio Tarver fight

Roy is the reason I started watching boxing.

Greatest boxer of my generation.

Hope the shit is minor or at least not progressive.

And to think, he got hit a LOT less than the average fighter with his career span. Them other niggas must be wheel chair bound by now.

It doesn't work like that. Look at George Foreman. That nigga never dodged a punch in his life and he's still got his wits about him... such as they are.

Look at George's head. Roy has a normal dome. But basically he has been experiencing concussions his whole career. And you know what time it is with that..

Some cats can take punches and some can't, it's as simple as that. Every time Roy got knocked out it wasn't due to an accumulation of shots, it was ONE shot that ko'd him, dude just physically couldn't take a punch.

George Foreman took 10 years off, plus he only got KO once in his career..

At some point, perhaps sooner than later, boxing and football (as much as we like both sports as they are) will have to smell the salts. The objective evidence is mounting.

Yeah, Danny Green barely tapped him and almost had him out cold. Jones chin went from decent to zero after the first fight with Tarver.

That was a rabbit punch.Don't get me wrong Roy did turn his head,But that was a weak shot. I always thought that he should have never went up to heavyweight anyway, if Roy would've fought Tarver flat out, without coming down he would have kill him.

Agreed. As soon as Jones came back from heavyweight it was over physically for him. Even in the first fight with Tarver that he barely won, Jones looked like a physical dehydrated mess, first time he ever looked bad in a fight, first time he ever got rocked in a fight (10th round). Dehydrated fighters are the most susceptible to brain damage due to the lack of fluid between the brain and the skull. IMO, Jones was damaged in the first fight with Tarver and hasn't been the same since. As Emmanuel Steward said, Jones probably came back too fast against Johnson and never gave his injury the necessary time to heal. Damn. Boxing is like dogfighting. Just one fight can ruin you.

Fuck that, if they tamper with those sports they will cease to be what they are. I swear they don't make people as tough as they used to be. If you don't want to get hurt, don't play contact sports, you can't have it both ways.

A big co-sign. Boxing and football (and porn, for that matter) are in the same ballpark - they're fun to watch, but I wouldn't want anyone I love taking part in it. Think about it, Chris Henry was found to have degenerative brain damage at the time of his death from repeated hits from football, and he was a receiver!!! As much as I love both sports, it's easy to take for granted that many of these guys are literally giving their lives for our entertainment.

I agree. I never agreed with the reduction of fights from 15 rounds to 12 rounds, for example. They should look at MMA before they look at boxing. Those guys haven't been in the game for two years when they already start getting those nasty cauliflower ears and other damage for the mauling they receive for chump change.

I doubt that. They will simply do what everything else does, people included: evolve. Neither sport is where it began and neither is where it will end. The sports/rules will change, equipment will change and we will adapt to it, as they and we already have.

So their love of the sport has nothing to do with it, or the fact that they are getting paid millions to play these sports, they're sacrificing themselves for us huh?

Neither did I, people act like these guys are Roman slaves forced into the Coliseum for Cesar's entertainment. As if they have no choice in the matter. It amazes me that people actually bring safety into the conversation when we're talking about a sport where the objective is to beat the shit out of the other guy while not getting hit yourself. What would they have them do, wear 25oz clown gloves, or maybe giant headgear, or maybe limit the amount of punches you can throw to the head and body per round.:smh: It's really true that men 100 hundred years ago were much tougher and now I can see why. And we wonder why the Europeans and other foreigners have taken over boxing and combat sports in general.

True but George took a lot of punishment late in his life and career even in fights he won (he was getting hammered in the Moorer fight and the Holyfield fight was vicious).

Damn Roy.

At first I wanted to disagree but I can't. I think they lived harder lives in general.

Back to 15 rounds.

This. It bred harder people. I hate to sound like Don King but 15 round fights separate the contenders from the pretenders. I don't think it's any coincidence that the "old guys" in boxing like B-Hop, Glen Johnson and Marquez are still up there out-toughing these young dudes. How many blue chip young fighters have had their lack of toughness exposed in the last couple of years, Victor Martinez, Chad Dawson, Devon Alexander and a few more I can't name right now, it's pretty bad. I'm not saying a guy should intentionally go out there to take punishment, but damn, dudes get a cut over their eye and all of a sudden can't see and quit. It used to be that a fighter would go all out once he was cut, out of fear that the fight would be stopped. I remember when fighters would beg the doc not to stop the fight, "just one more round" - I haven't seen that shit in a while. Old school fighters' first objective was to hit the other guy while not getting hit, nowadays it's just not to get hit. Now I'm no Pacman or even Mayweather fan but I can't imagine either one of them quitting on their stools unless they couldn't feel their legs.

I agree. They'll tinker with them, some rule changes will stick, some won't but they'll make changes.

I agree. Mayweather's ego would not let him stop unless he was knocked out or beaten badly. Like him or not, he was raised in an old school boxing family and he probably knows how much easier it is now than when his pop and uncles were coming up.

We really should stop comparing boxers and MMA fighters to ancient gladiators. I know people get hurt and killed boxing but those ancient cats were literally fighting for their lives. There wasn't a doctor to check cuts or a ref to tell the other guy to stop headbutting.

Most definitely. I think Mayweather is definitely manipulating the system. I don't think it cowardice on his part but more of a "fuck the sport, fuck all ya'll, I'm getting paid and getting out healthy" kind of an attitude. Even in the Pac situation. Maybe he believes he can beat Pac but knows he won't get out unscathed. He probably still puts his health before his wallet and that's smart but not what boxing fans expect from their fighters.

:lol:Maybe as a stunt one of these boxing promoters should throw a skinny ass hungry ass lion in the middle of the ring during an "eliminator bout" or something.:D
