I've been trying to find a good place to start with information and help from people that won't me feel like a herb for not knowing everything the more experienced users know. I thought I was on to something good over on Good and Evo (http://www.goodandevo.net/) but reading some of the comments got me shook. I just don't want to brick my shit and it's a helluva lot of info to process.

I have ES Security Manager which allows you to pw protect your apps, but I'm looking for something that won't even show up.

Ok, I've signed up & i'm on the samsung galaxy s/sphd700 page, but where should i start? I mean do i need to 'root' my phone 1st? or what is the best recommendation?
I was thinking about going orange with the icons to start since i got an orange rubber cover - i like the 0at RSS Icons - on iconfinder.com/free_icons .... what's next?
I use MortPlayer. Very functional, volume controllable by side buttons, runs in background while being accessible from the taskbar and pauses/resumes automatically when taking a call. However, it doesn't have a widget.

try PowerAmp, it does all that and has a widget. it also has an equalizer. and for people who like to just put music in a folder instead of creating playlists, poweramp also reads music from folders. i tried all the other ones, mixzing, winamp, etc. and Poweramp is the one that i have stuck with for the longest.

I downloaded the widgets that were said in this thread, simiclock and even got tajm and some other widgets. but cant find the one for the top of this picture.

a widget is something that is placed on your homescreen, sort of like a shortcut to the app. with most music players, they have a widget so you dont have to navigate all the way to the app just to skip a song.

Those are not icons. They are Widgets to the apps I'm using.

props on that, do i do this through my phone or do i have to connect my phone through a pc? like my laptop to do this stuff, my old phone had to do everything through my pc.. . .
From what kind of phone you have google on how to root it, there will be step by step on how to root, I have an EVO connected to my laptop once and after that everything else on my phone, so root first, then choose a ROM of your liking with ROM Manager installed on your phone, place the ROM in the SD card, reboot into clockwork mode select install from SD card choose the ROM select install and 5 minutes you will be up and running. In XDA they always have pinned up on how to root your phone, so read and read.
After that theme and play with it and read some more, eventually you will be a grandmaster
there is an app called photovault and videovault. although, you should backup your pics regularly. i had it and it messed up my pics, but my bro has the same phone and same program and it didn't mess up his pics.
i used this before and it wasnt so great. try FileCopy, its much better.
I don't want to root I just want to customize the screen is I got psyched plus fancy widget desktop visualizer and in gonna get Weatherbug elite.
