I'm slowly rebuilding my collection from scans and the local comic store (getting my nephew into reading) but my problem is I rarely meet people who read or can suggest anything good to pick up. Right now I'm reading a lot of old stuff 100 bullets, Ex-machina, Sandman, Irredeemable. Any suggestions?? What's everybody else reading??

I've been collecting a lot of Graphic Novels from the UK, Japan and America.

These are the current comics I am collecting monthly:

The Walking Dead. - I will be dropping this book after this last story arc completes.

28 Days Later. - Solid book.

Farscape. - If you are not a fan of the TV series then you probably won't like it...as a fan this book is awesome...but it really need to speed up some of the side stories.

These will probably be the last comics that I collect monthly. Complete TPB are where it's at for me.

Miniseries

Superior

Here are some of the TPBs I recently purchases for $1.50 each.

X-Men Forever Volume 2 - The Secret History Of The Sentinels

Ikigami The Ultimate Limit

Aliens Omnibus Volume 1

The Amazon

Ditto. Just looking for random Graphic Novels that catch me. Feel like I've been reading comics for so long that just about anything mainstream is boring.
One of my fave activities is finding a new comic shop and looking through their foreign or indie trades and finding lost gems there.

1. Walking Dead: Like you, I think after this next Walking Dead story arc (upcoming TPB vol 13), I'm gonna call it a wrap. Kirkman seems to be out of steam and recycling ideas. It was a helluva run, though. One of the most fun series I've read in years.

2. The Luna Bros: The Sword, GIrls. Pretty much anything these guys do, I get excited about. Their minimalist style feels like animation without falling too much into independent abstract, and The Sword was a VERY fun ride. GIRLS is a must-read, though.

3. I've only enjoyed two manga series, but on occasion, I'll re-read the entire Lone Wolf and Cub run, as well as an awesome 80's sci-fi series that Del Rey Book reprinted called Parasite. Great, great stuff.

4. Elfquest: Vol. 1. Every year since I've had this TP ( i got from the library (1991? 1990?), I re-read it. It's comic comfort food. This is possibly one of the most well crafted comics I've ever read. I still get chocked up at the same highs and lows. Keeping inline with the OP question, I just re-read this three nights ago.

5. Speaking of re-reading, I'm going through another pass of Essential X-Men volume 3-8. Seriously, the creative Marvel eras of Jim Shooter, Chris Claremont, John Byrne, Louise Simonson, Paul Smith....second to NONE in comics (DC had Wolfman/Perez on Titans, but that was equal, not better) . We're not talking nostalgia or rose-colored lenses here. These X-Men stories are still amazing today. I just happened to re-read classic Avengers stuff recently because I'm pitching a script to the cartoon. I hated the books as a kid, and my hopes were that in reading them with a different perspective, I'd see the Avengers in a totally new light. This muddled Michael Corvac shit is HORRIBLE. I've been wanting to read this legendary cosmic story for YEARS, and it's a chore.

Bluntly: Nobody was fucking with X-Men and Spider-Man during the 80's. This is Marvel at its absolute best, and I can honestly say that Marvel hasn't put out quality like this since they launched the ULTIMATES line. Thought balloons, a tool that has been completely abandoned by modern creators, are just blowing my mind with how intimate a reader can get with a character. GREAT comics.

6. Solar: Man of The Atom TPB[/B]. It's a slim little TPB put out by Valiant comics during the mid to late 90s. Like Elfquest, I read it every year. One of best self-contained superhero epics I've ever read. Read that last night.

7. NEMESIS: if you can find the scans on the boards, it's a breezy little exercise in violence that is entertaining enough to check out. This is Mark Millar playing more like WANTED than Kick ASS, and with Steve McNiven, the book looks fantastic. Gory. Unapologetic. Possibly not even 'good' as it holds absolutely zero value beyond slick guilty pleasure, but worth a look nonetheless if you dig the spectacle that is Mark Millar.

^ We share a lot of same taste.

My daughter is now reading and drawing from Elfquest. It's one of those books that, for me when I read it...I remember it like it was a movie or a TV special as a kid. Special places in my heart for that series.

John Bryne quote someone else once and said 'That Marvel has been coasting on their first 20 years of success.' For me personally, the X-Men stopped right after Xtinction Agenda...everything else after that is nonsense and never took place. That's why I have a kick out of reading Marvel's 'Forever' because since it's not 616 I know they are going to make the characters progress. I wonder if they will allow Bryne to do FF Forever...

I do a lot of search online for digital comics and read the free stuff some other guys put out. Some of it really groundbreaking but since they have no company attached to it...very few people will know about it...which makes it even more and more of a awesome thing to find on your own.

Kirkman - to me at least - has not lost STEAM but I think he is stretching himself thin by working on so many books + a TV show. TWD is too popular for me right now. Like too many people are into it and now it's a dead book because selling it back is no longer happening. Also, him reissuing the back issues in this TWD Weekly shit...pissed me off.

That is BADASS that your daughter is aware of ElfQuest. Way to pass quality down to the next gen. I def think that Elfquest is timeless. Part of me is kind of glad that the cartoon never happened. Elfquest remains one of those things unmolested by popular culture. Bone, ElfQuest, Finder, A Distant Soil... all of those indy gems...

Man, that's tough for me. I was the BIGGEST Claremont Cheerleader in the world and waited for the dude's return to X-Men like a masterless puppy. As far as I was concerned, X-Men died the minute he left the book at issue 3 of the new series (with Jim Lee). By the time he'd come back, he'd lost a lot of what I personally liked about his writing, and it wasn't for another few years before I realized that Claremont works best collaboratively with his co-plotter/artist. Seems that too often when the legendary dudes make a comeback, it's underwhelming. I've tried to read a few issues of X-Men Forever, X-Men: The End, and Extreme X-Men, and I just couldn't connect anymore. My X-men years was finally appeased and ended with that second X-Men movie. It was like a Claremont book come to life. Other than, perhaps, the very short run Brubaker had on the book, I haven't even had an INKLING of a desire to try it out again. Marvel, in general, is a universe of strangers to me now.

Anyway, to the point: as much as I'd love to romanticize a John Byrne FF Forever, or Walt Simonson Thor, there's something to be said for the fire and perspective of youth. Would a revisit appeal to a fanbase? Absolutely. I'm just not sure that i could read it.

I'm down for any and all recommendations. The only convention i get a kick out of going to anymore is Small Press Expo/APE due to the amazing underground indy spirit that throbs through the place like a pulse. There are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many amazing comics that come out self-published or via more adventurous retailers, that its heartbreaking that many of them won't ever develop a financial fan base. If you know of some quality books, I'll gladly read them. I'll admit that I'm a snob, however. Although I'm not the biggest stickler on art (I'm more of a story guy), Sometimes crude art is an automatic 3 strikes for me. Hell, sometimes awesome art might make me push through a mediocre story. And by crude, I mean, "Dude has a lot of heart telling this story...BUT is that a sock or a leg?" Yeah. Read too many of those.

Kirkman is awesome, this is true. When i do get a jones for a superhero book, Invincible is pretty much all one can ask for. It's totally uncomplicated by the demands of some extended universe and editorial mandate, which I love. Kirkman oversees all, not unlike the way the old X-Men crew had the breathing room to expand their universe in the 80's (or The Ultimate Line did in the beginning). I would LOVE to be wrong about Walking Dead, though. It's pretty much the only TPB that I consistently COLLECT. I'd given up monthlies years ago, and it's nice to have at least ONE reason to go to the funnybook store every 4 months or so....

I just started reading comics/graphic novels thanks to the Walking Dead series.

I highly recommend Y: The last man. Someone recommended it in the Walking dead thread as a comic to read to pass the time until the next issue was released and that entire series was FIRE

Excellent writing, story, characters, and concept.

5 stars

Aaaaaaaaaaah, can't believe I forgot to mention Gantz. :smh:

that is pretty much an automatic read and right up there with The Walking Dead for me.

Right now, I'm reading .cbr files of "SHADE: THE CHANGING MAN" Veritgo series.

I have the original series by Steve Ditko. But never ventured into the VERTIGO "reboot" by Peter Milligan and Chris Bachalo.

I keep wondering what would Steve Ditko think?
I don't think even his mind could come up with the weird shit Milligan has.

A lot of good suggestions in here. Definitely found some new titles imma start checking for. Does anyone know of any series that compliment Criminal by Ed Brubaker?? This thread needs to keep going.

A lot of that comic was taken from the 60's to 70's Detective comics and magazines. NOT DC's Detective comics but an actual magazine. Some of their stories were comics and some were short stories and others were 'ripped from the headlines.' There is this huge book that covers them all. I forget the name but I see it all the time in Strand's book store.

Scalped and Point Blank are also in the same vein.

Also there are a TON of french books that are fucking AWESOME crime stories.

If you do a search I recommended 'Miss: Better Living Through Crime' along with others when someone asked for some alternative books to get into.

Right now I can only think of series similar to Sleeper by Brubakers. The Last Days Of American Crime is a must read if you like Brubaker. Also check out Luke Cage Noir and the series X-Factor Madrox by marvel. They were actually pretty decent as well. 100 bullets was also a great read except in the end.....

Right now monthly I'm reading X-Factor, Invincible, and JL Generation lost.....

Must read TPB powers, The Sandman series, Fear Agent and Truth Red, White, and Black.

Oh my bad man...don't even go searching for it...I thought you had it on the cpu

All of The Marvel TPB are available at the local library if you can find them online or don't want to DL them.

Sometimes you can even buy them for under $2.00 off of the library.

If it's that serious take a blow dryer to the books and burn the 'germs' that may be on them.

I bought a box of 300 comics for $3.00 from this flea market near Montifore Hospital, years ago. It was mixed with TMNT, Heavy Metal, TPBs from various companies and a lot of indie books. I took a blow dryer to them just in case. Kept a lot of the books sold a few for a total $930.50.

I'm not tryna catch AIDS from no comic book!!!!!!!!!!!

A new ongoing book that I started reading and find myself enjoying is SPAWN. Jumped on from 213 from a conversation with a fellow writer and so far it's been pretty good.

could u please post some links of spawn on the spawn thread.

Another name I would like to drop is The Killer & Crossed: Family Values.

Yeah, Crossed is crazy. The new series is good too.

Theres a 6 part series called Severed, i would recommend this. The last issue should be out soon.

The iPad 2 has gotten me back in the habit of reading comics so I reserved about 8 gigs exclusively for comics (amazing how fast you can fill up 64 gigs).

I just finished all the Bloodshot comics (great series) so now I'm reading the following:

Invincible (pretty good, but I don't LOVE it like many here do)

House of M storyline (loving it so far)

Batwing (loving it so far)

Batwoman (loving it so far)

Claymore (reading this completely in Japanese, great so far)
