Fans of The Cosby Show in the 80s will remember the references in several episodes to Cliff Huckstable's bacon burger dog. His son on the show, Theo, was the biggest fan of this incredible edible creation:
• "Dad, I want a bacon burger dog!" - Theo Huckstable
• "Dad, do you think we could have a barbeque?" Theo asks, to which his dad replies, "I think maybe I'm sharp enough to whip up the best bacon burger dog I've ever made!"
• "Alright, a bacon burger dog!" - Theo Huckstable
What the heck is a Bacon Burger Dog and why did the Huckstable men like them so much? Well, when a hot dog is rolled up in a burger then wrapped in bacon then grilled to bacon burger dog perfection, it is the ultimate solution to that "Do I want a burger or a hot dog?" problem. Why not both in one neat package on National Hot Dog Day?
Bacon Burger Dogs (serves 4)
1 pound ground beef
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
4 hot dogs
8 slices bacon (not thick-cut bacon)
4 hoagie rolls (regular hot dog buns are not sturdy enough to hold true bacon burger dogs)
whatever condiments you like with burgers and hot dogs such as ketchup, mustard, relish, chopped onion, etc.
• Place the ground beef in a mixing bowl and add the salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce. Using your hands, toss the meat with the seasonings until well mixed.
• Divide the meat into 4 equal portions.
• Form each of the form meat portions into rectangular "burgers" that are each about 6 inches by 4 inches.
• Place 1 meat patty on a sheet of wax paper. Place the hot dog at one of the 2 longer edges of the burger. Using both hands, roll up the burger around the hot dog as shown in this brief video. (This video is somewhat amateurish; however, it perfectly demonstrates how to build a bacon burger dog.)

• Repeat with the remaining meat patties and hot dogs.
• As shown in the above video, wrap 2 slices of bacon in a sort of spiral around each burger dog, just slightly overlapping the edges of the bacon. (Note: it doesn't show this in the video but you can secure the edges of the bacon to the burgers dog with a toothpick to ensure the bacon will not come off the burger dog while grilling.)
• Cover burger dogs and place in the fridge until ready to cook.
• When ready to grill, preheat your BBQ to medium-high. Place the bacon burger dogs on the grill and cook for 15 - 20 minutes with the lid closed, turning them every few minutes to ensure even cooking all the way around the bacon burger dogs.
Serve on hoagie rolls will your favorite hamburger and hot dog condiments. Also, try Herb-grilled corn on the Cob and easy No-Bake Baked Beans for the perfect side dishes to your Bacon Burger Dogs.
And for a cool, refreshing summertime drink to serve with this Bacon Burger Dog meal, try Watermelon Agua Fresca or Pineapple Coconut Agua Fresca (with or without rum).
