Forbes: Cowboys, Redskins Remain Most Valuable NFL Franchises

For the fourth consecutive year, the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins are the NFL's most valuable franchises, according to a report by Forbes. Despite league-wide team values falling by approximately 2 percent, the Cowboys' net worth rose from $1.65 billion to $1.8 billion in the past year, just ahead of Washington's $1.55 billion net worth.

The last time the Cowboys did not hold the title of NFL's most valuable franchise was 2006, when the Redskins sat atop the throne, followed by New England. Dallas placed third that year, at approximately $1.17 billion.

One of the conclusions made by Forbes in the latest version of their annual NFL report is that the league "is evolving into a tiered league, with the upper one-third defined by entrepreneurial owners whose teams typically play in big markets and stadiums that generate insane amounts of cash." It's no surprise, then, that the teams rounding out the top 10 below Dallas and Washington are, in order: New England, the Giants, Houston, the Jets, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago and Denver.

Even amongst that group, the Jets, Baltimore, Chicago and Denver all saw their franchise values decrease from 2009. The news was even worse at the other end of the spectrum. Jacksonville, currently the least-valuable franchise in the NFL, according to Forbes' report, saw an overall decline of 16 percent -- from $866 million in '09 to $725 million now. Oakland actually moved up a spot in the rankings, from No. 32 to 31, despite a five-percent drop ($797 million to $758 million).

Buffalo, St. Louis and Minnesota rounded out the bottom five, with the Bills and Rams suffering 12 and 15 percent losses in overall value over the past year, respectively.

The Packers landed 14th on Forbes' list. Green Bay is the only NFL franchise that releases its financial statements to the public. When the Packers did so this year, back in July, they showed a record $258 million in revenue in 2009-10, but a drop in operating profits from $20 million to $10 million.

damn the raiders have a storied tradition but a series of snafus + the turrrible stadium situation has just doomed them

jacksonville on the other hand, has no one to blame for themselves...they coulda drafted a local legend (tebow) and sold jerseys/seats for a guy that wouldn't even be starting (he's pumping denver's jersey sales through the roof)

ah well

The Cleveland Browns are worth $1.02B?!:lol:

And Jacksonville is worth less than Detroit?!:lol: The last time Detroit made the playoffs were in 1999, and the Jags were founded in 1995:lol:

considering what AL paid for the team he is still :dance::dance:. If they ever find a way to build a new stadium out there they will surely climb the list.

A surprise team to me in the top ten is the Texans

Man can someone explain to me why there isn't a team in LA? That's the only reason the Raiders aren't higher. Nobody wants to rock shit from damn Oakland.

LA colesium, as opposed to a new stadium. That's why Al davis moved them back. As for the rams, don't know.

Of course they are.

Daniel Snyder like James Dolan of the Knicks know how to market shitty franchises.

I knew my Giants would be right there.

The Rams moved because they couldn't get a new stadium, the Colisuem was renovated for the 84 Olympics and people felt that that was enough.

St. Louis on the other hand built them a new stadium.

of course them and the Jets are right there because of that new stadium and those SBL's they sold to the season ticket holders. Now the season ticker holders are mad because the teams have all of a sudden began selling more season tickets without the need to purchase an SBL.

I guess the only good thing about the seat builder license is if you ever decide to forfeit your season tickets you have the right to sell that license.

WTF???

You absolutely cannot be serious?!?

Dolan doesn't know how to market ish!!!

You call trying to re-hire Isiaih Thomas after that disaster of a first go round marketing?!?

Any 1st year PR rep could've told him that that wasn't the way to go!

Dolan is using the built-in fanbase that both the Knicks and the Rangers already had and is taking outright advantage of them, charging $1800 a seat courtside!!!

Snyder and Jones on the other hand have tried @ least to build winners on the field which brings in new fans which brings in $$$.

The Steinbrenner model works, spend money to field a winning team and own the network that broadcasts them.

When has Dolan EVER done ANYTHING near that?!?

And as it was just said, it's the new stadium with the PSLs that put the Giants and even more the Jets up so high.

The Jets shouldn't be in the same neighborhood as the G-men, longer history as one of the original franchises + 3 championships + larger fanbase, but they are due to sharing the new stadium.

21. New Orleans, $955 million

I can see the Saints being in the top 15 in a year or two.

Wait till the 9ers start making the playoffs for a couple seasons. They'll be in the top 15. Then once that new stadium pops off...top 10 ;)

The Knicks payroll is 12th in the league.

http://thehoopdoctors.com/online2/2009/08/2009-2010-team-payrolls/

And Dolan owns MSG Network (they broadcast the Knicks games)

Know your history bruh!

MSG Network was in place and operating looooooooong before the Dolan's bought the Garden from Paramount/ITT, try since 1969.

And a problem here is that they own the main cable system that it's on, Cablevision.

And the Knicks payroll under Isiaih Thomas was the HIGHEST in the league @ 130 million, remember the Knicks were one of the few NBA teams that consistently had to pay a luxury tax because they were so far over the cap with absolutely no play-off victories to show for it!

They are where they are now because of Don Walsh yet Dolan, in the worst PR move of all PR moves, tried to rehire Isiaih yet again!

And tell me if you heard that BS about Isiaih speaking to Amare' and possibly convincing him to sign with the Knicks and also talking to Lebron???

Turns out that in an interview with The New Yorker magazine Amare' said that he NEVER spoke to him, that he doesn't know him at all and that now there's a good chance that it was all of this confusion that possibly made LeBron RUN from the Knicks!

James Dolan is the son of someone who did big things and had the business handed to him.

He bought Nobody Beats The Wiz and we know how that turned out.

He even convinced the Cablevision board to stay out of the satellite business, which eventually became their biggest competitor!

Will NEVER happen because of location!

Who's gonna build a new stadium in New Orleans, especially since the Superdome was just fixed?

Jersey sales are only a small portion, a huge chunk of that money goes to the league, the players, and the players union.

Stadium revenue goes to the team.

The new Meadowlands Complex and Cowboys Stadium along with all new stadiums not only have double the amount of luxury boxes in them but more importantly, almost triple the amount of vendors inside the stadium.

The new Meadowlands Complex has about 5,000 more seats yet is fully DOUBLE the size of the old stadium, from 1 million square feet to 2 million.

Guess what all that new space is dedicated to?

When the Saints get a new stadium, they will move up on the list.

This is why Houston with their new Reliant Stadium is so high on the list.

And the Redskins have Fed Ex Field

Dude... no need for the , lol

I guess I should have included the part about playing in the same actual stadium. That at least kinda sorta differentiates the NYC teams from San Fran/Oakland. Chargers are in no way shape or form the same market as the northern Cali teams, right? I mean California is a huge state, so tell me how San Diego fans and bay area fans are sharing a market? Same goes for Houston and Dallas... they are minimum 3 or 4 hours away by car, so most definitely not the same market.

DMV and and Bay Area come close to the situation though, minus the same exact stadium part.

California teams are 20 minutes apart. (Raiders and 49ers). Chargers further down.
Texas.
DMV.

The Giants and Jet are heavily in debt and will be in trouble if there is a strike next year. They should of built a dome like the Cowboys so they supplement their income with other event. Besides the Super Bowl, they can draw the Final Four, Boxing match, BCS Bowl games, etc. Instead of having the stadium for 20-30 times a year, they can do it for 3x times that at a minimum

True indeed but they didn't make it a dome for two reasons...

1. Home field advantage.
The famed winds @ the Meadowlands + the cold in the winter.
Warm weather teams and teams that play in domes (Dallas) have problems playing there when the temperature drops.
2. Cost
To put a dome on the stadium would have added an additional 2~300 million $$$ to the cost of a stadium that alreadycost more than Cowboy stadium yet is not as "grand".
The reason for this is union (it just costs more to build things in the tri-state area) and location (a dome would have to be strong enough to withstand the weight of several tons of snow and ice, unlike Cowboy stadium).
