Hip-hop fans with an affinity for wax are mourning the end of an era - the closing of Fat Beats record stores.

The intimate West Village shop, one of the last in the city that specializes in selling hip-hop vinyl, is closing its doors, the company announced Wednesday.

"The business is down. The rent is up," said store manager Eric (DJ Eclipse) Winn, 40. "We've slowly lost all of the retail end of the company. ... Between the Internet and Serato [a digital DJ program] that's what hurt the vinyl sales."

Inside the store, known as "The Last Stop for Hip-Hop," customers were devastated.

"Damn, I didn't know," said DJ Kase, 29, of Jersey City, a longtime customer at the Sixth Ave. store.

"The Internet messed it all up. This was like a cornerstone for hip-hop. This is where you get your [stuff]," he said.

He recalled when he saw Outkast inside the store and picked up Raekwon's album "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..."

"It's something about putting your hands on wax and digging through records. It's something the Internet can't do for you," the deejay said. "I have a true love for vinyls."

Jorge Berrios, 34, of South Ozone Park, Queens, spent $13 on three vinyls - "Player's Anthem" by Junior M.A.F.I.A., "Candy Rain" by Soul for Real and Zhigge's "Rakin' in the Dough."

"You have no idea how sad I am," Berrios told the store owner. "It's almost like my second home."

The store was a haven for rap fans, and a top promotional stop for artists. The Fugees, Common and Kool G Rap were among the artists whose autographed photos covered the walls.

Veteran hip-hop producer DJ Spinna was deeply saddened by the closing of the store that boosted his career.

"It was definitely a landmark for the underground movement of the '90s," he said. "Young people who've never touched wax probably don't know what the closing of a store like this means."

In past years, once popular music stores like Tower Records, HMV and the Virgin Megastore have also been shuttered.

"It just means that we're heading to a place where music won't exist in a physical form anymore," the producer said.

The final day for the New York store, which first opened on W. Ninth St. in 1994, will be Sept. 4. The Los Angeles store will close on Sept. 18.

"We're losing stores that sell vinyl because of downloads and stuff like that," said veteran DJ Clark Kent. "It's a shame that deejays lose this place."

I read about this yesterday. Damn shame. :smh:

I remember spending countless hours in that place picking up wax from relative unknowns, all the while to be greeted downstairs by a fleeting hoard of more unknowns pushing their albums or mixtapes on the street.

Those were the days.

One last pilgrimage up there to satisfy the vinyl purist in me.

peace

:puke::smh::(:(
Copped my WuTang manual book from over there.
Knew it was & would come down to this with all that seraot and net shit but Damn....
TowerRecords has been closed but THIS is a fucking landmark:(
Knew some kats that work with and up in there.
Birkina's on Houston is still open but not for the vinyl and lps.
Just dont put no iPod shop there or some shit:hmm:
BlessTheDead

How u going to feel bad...the internet has been the major source for music for years now. They should of changed their business model. I spent hours upon hours in record shops in NYC...discoroma, vinylmania, A-1, Rock n Soul, but every dj that didn't convert to CDJ's was rocking Serato. Buying music whenever you want, and not going to the record store to find out the hottest track is sold out has it's perks. All the record stores in the city that catered to dj's are gone for the most part. No dj misses lugging around crates and crates of music, or misses saying," I have that song but it's at home."

The writing was on the wall 7 years ago when serato introduced Scratch Live. Sorry they gone, but few will miss.

Damn.
Fat Beats! Fuck man. There goes an important part of Hip-Hop history.
Crate diggers looking for classic Hip-Hop wax too. Gone.

I hope they have some kind of blow party or concert or something.

Wow, I remember going up in this spot countless times with my ex to peruse the vinyl with him...

Such a damn shame... :smh:

Will vinyl also one day go away? Will there come a point when there is no market for vinyls? Maybe cats, including DJs, will strictly start using c.ds and the internet only...:dunno:

Damn! I remember goin there to cop "phat caps" back in the day and I was surprised to see they had one in Amsterdam. We're not far of from the day when younger kats won't even know what a record is.

funny that with all these hiphop millionaires, nobody seems to be interested in preserving the culture.

why is the hiphop musuem taking so long to get going?

why is fatbeats closing?

why are most of the old school legends dead broke?

Beat street - closed
Music factory - closed
Albee square mall - demolished

Damn :smh:

Cats need to jump some of the gimmick MC's in the game that waste a lot of money on cars and chains to save FAT BEATS. e.g:

Vinyl market is for collectors now, as for most working dj's lugging all those crates is dead. Clubs are mo=ving away from CD based turntables, or integrating Serato or Traktor Pro into their systems. As for CD DJ's that come with a book of CD's....their time has come and gone. I see the day when laptops are a thing of the past too...the art is always evolving. Vinyl had it's time, and as much as I love my 12's...not having to worry about a bad needle or the record skipping, pops...the record warping when doing an outside party,,,it goes on and on.

I now use the Numark NS7, and I find i'm using it more and more.

Here is what i am talking about... What is a dude doing with a chain that's 900 carats... :smh:

I'm using vinyl that controls the MP3's on my laptop...it's the only way to go. I have my big set up with my 12's, but the Numark NS7 is the truth..great for BBQ's. Don't need to worry about needles, wind, idiot bumping into the turntables...just getting down to business

It was inevitable that they were gonna close. Record stores are like ghost towns now.
Back in the day (pre-serato) the record shop was more than just a place to buy vinyl. Djs could go there and talk about music, get put up on new shit, network with other djs, learn tricks....the internet can't replace that.

true, I used to hang out at Dancetraxx on the lower east side in Manhattan...Phil used to rock the latest cuts, and you would just point to the cuts that you liked. But some of the dj forums are pretty good, and recording shopping in your shorts..sipping some coffee, or while getting in a quick game of COD is nice

why is the hiphop musuem taking so long to get going?

Because KRS wants to get paid.

why is fatbeats closing?

Because there's no longer a viable market for Vinyls. They didn't adapt, they have to close. It happens.

why are most of the old school legends dead broke?

Because they got raped early and/or squandered their money.

I hope they change their business model from bricks and mortar, to a online retail website. Im sure people still will buy the records.

M

Let's see if anyone from the Forbes Hip Hop list will step up.

why would someone step up to pour money into a dead business?

If people don't buy records, you can't keep it open just for the fuck of it.

Vinyl for some reason, got romanticized, an lives on past it's usefulness.

Peopl forget that it's the MUSIC, not what format it's on that matters. I don't give a shit if I gotta lug some shit around to hear it.

I don't know whats worst... fat beats closing or niggas giving this thread 5 stars.
