Man one of the friendliest most genuine people you ever want to meet, and a funk legend has passed on. Most of you have heard his famous guitar licks.

The heart is heavy man... RIP big brotha

Legendary Funk guitarist and Cincinnati native Phelps “Catfish” Collins succumbed to cancer today at the age of 66. Collins (along his younger brother Bootsy) was an architect of Funk as a member of James Brown’s JB’s, Parliament/Funkadelic (fellow P-Funk guitarist Gary Shider passed away just a couple of months ago) and Bootsy’s Rubber Band and was responsible for some of the greatest Funk guitar riffs every laid down.
Collins’ guitar work can be heard on some of the biggest songs in the entire Funk cannon, including Brown’s “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” and Parliament’s “Flash Light,” two songs Rolling Stone put in its list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” And Hip Hop music might sound a little different if it weren’t for Catfish — songs he played on were sampled on Hip Hop tracks by Snoop Dogg, Black Eye Peas, A Tribe Called Quest, Digital Underground, Big Daddy Kane, 2Pac, Biz Markie, Kurtis Blow, Hammer, Grandmaster Flash and tons of others. In more recent years, Catfish played on songs by Deee-Lite and fellow Cincinnatian Freekbass and he was a contributor to the soundtrack for the 2007 hit comedy Superbad. Catfish will forever be remembered as one of the greatest Funk guitarists in the history of music.

Catfish with his baby brother Bootsey holding down the guitars for the God father..

It's really sad that some of the most talented Black people who ever lived are dying almost literally everyday and there are almost no younger Black people around to pick up the torch.

The talentless nobodies around today like Rick Ross or Gucci Man aren't even worthy of a fraction of the props or respect that people who've died this year like Teddy Pendergrass,Marvin Isley,Lena Horne,Al Goodman or "Catfish" Collins deserve.

R.I.P.

This I agree with whole heartedly. Maybe we can be the change we wish to see.

His contributions are respected and may he rest in peace.

RIP

I used to jam to him and Bootsy. :(

I heard of Bootsy but not him. R.i.p.

All of the Bootsy Collins records you can think of, that's Catfish playing guitar. In PFunk, it's difficult to know all the time, but Catfish had a distinctive style - reminiscient of real old school guys like Wes Montgomery.

Waves of depression are coming over me. I didn't know the man, but this is making me more and more sad to think about...
