MERGED - iPhone

Re: Apple Is Discriminating Against Africa!!! Refuses to sell the iPhone there...

Divine? Has Jobs mentioned any of this when you two have pillow talk? Or does he throw you some paper towels, tell you to clean up and get out.

Sent from my HTC Hero using Tapatalk

u know they don't talk. Divine just assumes the position then leaves when jobs is done. not a word between them.

Verizon iPhone in January, claims Bloomberg
from Engadget by Nilay Patel

Stop us if you've heard this one before: Bloomberg says Verizon will get the iPhone... sometime in January. Yep, it's another fuzzy rumor sourced from "two people familiar with the plans," and while we really do believe Big Red will eventually get the iPhone in our lifetimes, at this point we're beyond cynical about pieces like this -- chatter about a Verizon iPhone now regularly reaches deafening levels before crashing down in yet another cloud of AT&T-exclusive dust. However, if you must insist on living an impossible dream, this latest rumor does at least line up with the piece from the Wall Street Journal in March claiming that CDMA iPhone would begin production in September, giving Apple plenty of time to ramp up for a January launch.

Of course, we have to wonder if it's the smartest move to announce the hotly-anticipated Verizon iPhone right after the holiday buying season, and we can't imagine all those iPhone 4 buyers who were just enticed into signing new two-year AT&T contracts are going to be happy to discover they could have waited and escaped the Blue, but we'll have to wait and see -- Apple just told us that they "don't comment on rumors and speculation" when we pinged them and asked for comment. Fingers crossed, we suppose.

Video Clearly Shows Antenna Defect on iPhone 4 Web Browser

http://vimeo.com/12864890

The iPhone 4's antenna problem continues. People around the world keep experiencing it. So many that a class action suit is already in the works. This video proves that a simple touch affects web page loading, stopping it completely.

As you can clearly see here, this problem is not just about the iPhone 4 not displaying full bars, but it's about real data loss. It's pretty simple: Leaving the phone on the table loads the web page at full speed. Touching the problematic area, pauses the loading of the web page.

We have already experienced this problem ourselves many times, with mail and voice call drops and voice degradation, but this video is pretty damning evidence about how it works. Since it's a design problem—and the antenna is all around the phone, making it hard to avoid unless you have a bumper or force your hand position—it will affect everyone at some point, unless you are really close to a cell tower.

While the iPhone 4 is a great phone, this problem affects at least 40% of the iPhone buyers—according to most web polls—and as high as 93% of users according to a recent UK-based poll. Those who bought iPhone 4s here in Gizmodo are experiencing signal loss, although they are keeping it despite this problem. Joel Johnson, Brian Barrett, and myself would avoid it until the fix the problem.

Apple hasn't yet provided with a fix except recommending to "hold the iPhone in a different way" or "buy a case."

If you are affected by the problem, you can sign the petition to ask Apple for free bumpers. :smh::smh::smh:

Yesterday, we posted a video showing an iPhone shopper talking to an EVO 4G salesman. That video was a little one-sided, depicting the iPhone buyer as a mindless drone who wanted the iPhone no matter what features the EVO offered. Today comes a video from the other side.

In this video, also made by tinywatchproductions using Xtranormal text-to-speed software, an owner of an EVO 4G walks into an Apple Store to try and get his phone fixed. “But this has a 4th G, the iPhone 4 is missing a ‘G’.” Just as before, the language here gets a bit NSFW.

AT&T Opens Its Doors for iPhone 4 Walk-Ins, Lines Start Forming
from IntoMobile - Cell Phone News, Information, and Analysis by Marc Flores
att-iphone-4-line.jpg

If you didn’t pre-order an Apple iPhone 4, or you tried and tried but had no luck at all, this must have been the longest wait of your life. After all, you had to sit around and watch your pals as they video chatted with each other or Apple employees through FaceTime and oggled those high-definition displays. Today, you can finally waltz right into an AT&T retail store and pick one up without a reservation. Well, it’s more like waltz over to the outside of an AT&T retail store, stand outside along with others who are queued up for an iPhone and maybe grab one after just a few hours of waiting.

Considering the fact that 1.7 million iPhones were sold over the weekend, I’m hoping that was some sort of indicator for Apple to ship plenty of iPhones for each location. Of course it doesn’t always work that way, but I was trying to give those of you who didn’t get there at 7 a.m. this morning a little bit of hope.

Hulu Plus on iPhone and iPad Impressions: Hello, Future of Television

hulu-plus-intro-thumb-640xauto-15112.jpg

Why pay for cable to watch stuff only on my television when I can stream most of the TV I care about to my computer, iPhone and iPad for $10/month? That's what I'm thinking after using the awesome Hulu app.

Here's some of our lightning impressions of Hulu Plus on the iPhone and iPad:

• Oh, I wish the Netflix app on iPad felt this smooth. It's a real app on the iPhone, not a hacky web page that pushes content into iOS's native h.264 stream player.

• On an iPhone 4, videos look pretty good over 3G. Not great. But pretty good. More than good enough. Over Wi-Fi, they look marginally better. On an iPad, Joel says it's "roughly on par with the 480p streams on the web."

• Ads. Yes, there are ads. Yes, even though you're paying $10 a month. Yes, they're more annoying on a phone, since they're still 30 seconds, and occur at roughly the same intervals as they do with the normal free Hulu. (Plus on app consoles like the iPad and Xbox, you can't just switch over to another window while you wait.)

Clicking a button on the top right takes you to a web page for the ad using the in-app browser.

• Subscriptions to particular series are nice. Every time there's a new episode of 30 Rock it'll push it into your queue. (It may even send you a status update. We haven't tested that yet.) The queue is helpful, since browsing on here is slightly more annoying than on a computer, and it's linked to your Hulu account.

• Movies, oddly, are buried under the 'More' tab on the iPhone. (There's a proper tab for them on iPad.) But did I just start streaming High Fidelity over 3G? Yes I did.

• When you return the app it asks you if you'd like to resume watching what you were last watching. Lovely.

• There's a built-in search that works just as you'd expect.

• The standard Hulu player interface remains intact (which is nice), minus the thumbnail previews when you're scrubbing through a clip.

• On the iPad, it feels more or less just like Hulu.com. A clean, simple design has always been one of Hulu's strengths; that's a plus. On iPhone, it's more like an app, and there's a bit of a struggle to pack all of Hulu into such a small screen. Though it works, mostly. For instance, there isn't a great way to skim through episodes yet other than by air date, recently added or popular. When you get to the Buffy show page, you have to scroll through all 143 episodes, or go back to the search tab to find the one you want. The show splash pages are pretty, though.

• Which is all to say, this is powerful stuff. Hulu won't kill cable today or even tomorrow, but you can see how it will. The app's slick, and it's the full, undiluted Hulu experience. Hulu's library of TV shows and movies is only going to grow, and instead of paying for a service that pipes content to a screen or two simply in my house, I'm suddenly streaming tons of TV and movies to every screen I use—TV (through Xbox 360), computer, iPad and iPhone. (You can also see why Apple was supposedly negotiating hard to make this happen for iTunes.)

Combined with Netflix, Hulu Plus forms like the Voltron of video. And the only thing that can kill it are the TV and movies studios that created it. Hopefully they won't.

Re: Apple Is Discriminating Against Africa!!! Refuses to sell the iPhone there...

bottom line nobody really needs the iphone. it's not stopping anybody from doing jack shit not to have it.
You right, but I just don't understand why Apple would leave any money on the table. Africa has several of the world's fastest growing economies. Why not sell there and get the brand established in new markets?

Re: Apple Is Discriminating Against Africa!!! Refuses to sell the iPhone there...

There is bullshit in this article... Africa has 950 million people. How can more than half of them have cellphones when half of the population is under 15?

Re: MERGED - IPhone 4

Leaked: Apple’s internal iPhone 4 antenna troubleshooting procedures

1. Keep all of the positioning statements in the BN handy – your tone when delivering this information is important.
a. The iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. Our testing shows that iPhone 4’s overall antenna performance is better than iPhone 3GS.
b. Gripping almost any mobile phone in certain places will reduce its reception. This is true of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and many other phones we have tested. It is a fact of life in the wireless world.
c. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 3GS, avoid covering the bottom-right side with your hand.
d. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 4, avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band.
e. The use of a case or Bumper that is made out of rubber or plastic may improve wireless performance by keeping your hand from directly covering these areas.
2. Do not perform warranty service. Use the positioning above for any customer questions or concerns.
3. Don’t forget YOU STILL NEED to probe and troubleshoot. If a customer calls about their reception while the phone is sitting on a table (not being held) it is not the metal band.
4. ONLY escalate if the issue exists when the phone is not held AND you cannot resolve it.
5. We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers – DON’T promise a free bumper to customers.

Seems like no software fix is coming and apple feels there is no problem...sad lol

Not sure what divine is saying, because I got that plugin that allowed me to drop him on ignore...

But there are probably a lot of reasons that a company as control-oriented as Apple would not allow their product in Africa. High-risk, low reward for apple.
