Some iPhone 4 users are reporting cellular reception problems when they hold the phone with their hands around the outer metal band of the device.

Users have been sending in videos to Gizmodo showing the signal bars dropping noticeably, sometimes from 5 to 1 bars, when they hold the metal ring around the iPhone 4. The stainless steel band, which is broken into three pieces with small gaps in between, are extensions of the antenna and help it boost wireless reception. Apple CEO Steve Jobs touted the antenna design as an innovative way to improve reception.

It appears the problem happens when a user's hand connects the different metal sections together, somehow killing the phone's ability to receive a cellular signal. One respondent said it happens specifically when you hold both the left and bottom panels at the same time.

i'm going to let my contract run out. but sprint is even shittier service in my area..


tmobile is my best option but i checked their site.. damn they have shitty phones..

hopefully there will be better options or apple will fix their issues come feb 2011

i'm sure the iphone will be fixed in a month of 2..definitely by time shopping season starts in early november.

the shit that kills me is how steve jobs handled the obvious fuckup. telling users to hold it differently was a straightup "fuck you" to every and any loyal apple user who waits in lines, pre orders and buys into the whole apple hype.

I can definitely see how people would be pissed, I don't understand how that got past the R&D department.

The rest of the phone works so well that most people are gonna wait it out or just buy a cover, as good as this phone takes pictures and video, and the clarity of the display I would hate to give it up.

Yeah the phone is great but they knew about this. That's why they showed that bumper case at the keynote.

even funnier.. the hiccup at wwdc where he had wi fi problems were probably do to this same issue

In theory it could just be a baseband issue as it's been rumored since some 3g and 3gs phones have shown similar issues under certain circumstances, especially since some people have reported no service but still able to make and receive calls and data. Just have to see if they will have a quick turnaround for a fix. Contrary to belief they won't just let people deal with it, it's national news. the only people claiming that can't stand Apple anyways.
