Why do the Japanese draw themselves as white?

Ya'll are so ignorant.

The Manga style of art is from the 60's in Japan. The Japanese artists felt that Japanese society was too xenophobic and self-worshipping. So those artists (they were like Japanese version of hippies) started drawing characters to look the opposite of Japanese. They wanted to influence younger generations not be so close minded as their parents. Since Japanese people have slanted eyes, they drew people with big eyes. Since Japanese people have short legs, they drew people with long legs. Since Japanese people have black hair, they drew people with all colors of hair. If you notice with a lot of manga, the characters aren't usually Japanese or influenced by Japanese culture. They are aliens, supernatural, or from the West (including China). Most of the really popular Japanese Mangas have characters that are the most different (like Berserk, Fist of the North, etc). They simply wanted to show Japanese children that the world was bigger than Japan. The art style just happened to get popular and is now associated with all Japanese cartoons/comics.

Adolf C. done stole the show

This topic seems to pop up every year with the same usual misconceptions and misinterpretations that come up, so I'm going to keep it brief this time.

Basically, folks need to LIVE in Japan to get a better sense of things (not just VISIT, I mean LIVE in Japan). Otherwise, this question is asked with the presumption already made, "Well, no matter what anyone says Goku doesn't look like a Japanese person I've ever seen so therefore all Japanese people see themselves or IDEALIZE being white." Case in point...

Great signature, btw

To anyone who actually knows Japanese people, this couldn't be further from the truth in most cases (not to say that there aren't brainwashed zombies here, but that can be said for EVERY country, so I digress).

How cartoons look and are drawn, MOST of the time, is not meant to be snapshot of reality as far as appearances of the characters are concerned (which is VERY MUCH unlike the philosophy behind how most cartoons are drawn in the US). I'll leave it at that.
I hope you are part japanese cause they got you GOOD

If you have seen the HBO mini series The Pacific the American soldiers would regularly call the Japanese soldiers yellow monkeys.

The propaganda is still going strong today. They just replaced the club with a basketball, how sweet.

That's why he is a media darling...he asks "how high"

I'd be REALLY surprised if he can read at a 12th grade level:smh:

I always though those cartoon characters were made to exploit a European revering market as far as generating currency is concerned.

Unlike most here, who are going by surface details and not actually knowing/spoken to, many Japanese people at all. I actually live in Japan and have gone through many experiences with Japanese in THEIR culture (not the outside looking in perspective, like 90%+ of the posters in this thread). I'm much more informed on this matter, but as I stated before, this topic comes up every year with the same conclusion each time regardless of what anyone else says. That conclusion being...

"Well, Sailor Moon doesn't look like any Japanese person I've ever seen, so therefore the Japanese collective sees themselves as white (or IDEALIZES being white). It's as simple as that.

So if actually speaking to Japanese people on this matter, done research about it as portion for my University paper back in the day (having gone to school in the US and Japan), having seen and dealt with discrimination in Japan (With some help with my wife, I've had some of those "black sambo" figurines taken down from display in a couple shops), having gone through many great experiences with Japanese people, somehow means that they've "got me" on this matter then you're better off going by this quote.

"All that education done rendered you an idiot."

Amazingly, none of what you said has answered question. Being loquacious isn't going to suffice. So humor me if you will, according to your research, why do the Japanese paint their heroes in the Anime as white Caucasians? (In terms of features) And you mean to tell me the Japanese have no inferiority complex whatsoever?

Yo man I've trying to say that it's all BULLSHIT, them motherfuckas are color struck, there are even some groups that try to emulate and look Black (african-american) and probably know more about hip-hop and black culture than we do... over tannin their skin, poutin out their lips... dressin like run dmc rejects n shit, wild bizzaro type shit goin on over there in japan

motherfuckers dont know a lick of english but can recite every lyric from a Wu catalog

You mean just like we got groups over here dressing like they just stepped out of the Bleach universe, snacking on pocky, trying to sound like their favorite anime character with atrocious Japanese and throws it into english conversations as it's a sign of superiority and knowledge. Every last one of them would cut off a foot if they could live over there because it's so much better than here yet in reality they probably would get ridiculed worse then they are in their home country.

All you just pointed out was what happened in the US last decade. People see all the glorifying violence and danger in videos and think its the truth because in reality they don't know a single Black person. As I mentioned before chances are they haven't actually met someone Black before, especially if they aren't from a major city.

Everyone has country/style groupies and most of them are way off with reality. Thankfully most of them grow out of it.

Why do they often draw a giant bead of sweat when they are working on something. or show a giant nosebleed when they are attracted to someone? Most of anime is over-exaggeration to make sure the point is across. Would be kind of hard to pull off if they drew all "beady eyes and dark hair" like you want.

What the original guy said makes sense. what you see as default varies where

I don't need to live in Japan be married to a Japanese woman and talk to Japanese people to see that Naruto's hair is Blond...and that there are NO naturally blond Japanese

I have watched COUNTLESS anime...and the LEAD characters or "good looking" ones 90% of the time have NON-JAPANESE or white NORDIC features

If I took the drawings into the street and asked "what" ethnic back ground is this person what do you think a non-Japanese person would say?? :hmm::hmm:

Give it up ...put the cape away...the emperor has no clothes...:lol:

I can believe this to be the case.

Sometimes the truth is somewhere in the middle.

i responded to that topic the same whay ima respond here:

SOME manga artists draw JAPANESE PEOPLE like Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) or Hiroaki Samura (Blade of the Immortal). the people in these two examples have Japanese features (eyes, hair, builds, etc) and i LOVE the art in these works.

most of the rest of that stuff features very VERY white characters.

now i'm not gonna say WHY they do it, but to PRETEND those folks aren't white is just silly.

i read a book called Manga! Manga! back in 1983 which said the big eye craze in Anime started with Betty Boop...and the manga artists' attempts to adopt AMERICANIZED standards in their work.

folks need to stop fooling themselves and deal with the truth.

What's even weirder is that Saiyans had tails and turned into monkeys during full moons. And according to their background, they're a warrior race that became enslaved to an alien race of lizards or some shit... and when you piss them off they turn from tom cruise to brad pitt... japs are weirdos period... don't try to make sense of their bullshit man, just let it slide...

Good quote Klint because this is what it boils down to.:yes::yes::yes:

I'll try to explain a little.

I took three years of Japanese. Two different teachers from japan and one Japanese-American teacher.

Now me personally. Starting at the very first anime I watched as a child (sailor moon and dragon ball) I can honestly say I've never thought that any of the characters looked like white people.
Never thought a thing of it until some one asked me one day why the japanese always draws there characters as white...my response( and it still is my response) was that they didn't look or even act white to me.

The argument is ridiculous...

Well let me address things like FMA and similar anime. Just like the poster above me said about having it be modeled after germany. I've usually only experienced flat out white looking or flat out japanese/asian or african looking anime characters when it has some type of connection to actual history...seriously check it out it's damn true. Either that or when they specifically state that they're influenced by caucasian culture/history like in Claymore and full metal alchemist and other animes.

Naruto...I was reading Naruto well before it hit the states in the U.S. jump magazine. Naruto is a flat out Japanese comic/manga it's about japan with Japanese people with Japanese and Asian folk lore slammed into it. The character design is what makes it dynamic to read and Naruto having blond hair blue eyes rocking an orange jump suit is absurd ( the creater points this out himself in an interview) it was meant as a joke (a brightly colored ninja assassin )and served more as a dynamic color scheme than anything. Orange blue and yellow makes for a pleasing and dynamic combination of colors fit for a hero and is easy on the eyes. Naurtos jump suit is orange and all of his accessories, weapons and even his most power full ability is colored some shade of blue.

Now the point I'm trying to make here is that it's true that the Japanese don't see their anime/manga characters as white and when they say that they see them as Japanese they mean nationality or culturally wise not by their facial features...almost all manga and anime takes place in japan built around japanese culture.

The way they draw them is so unrealistic that it's impossible to say what race they are. Multi colored gravity defying hair, skin, and eyes including purple, pink, red, orange and bright ass yellow eyes etc...

This same conversation and question, along with a lot of other questions dealing with stereotypes, were discussed in class.

It was explained by our teachers that the Japanese view their art work, their main stream culture and even their language as "cute".

The japansese get a kick out of drawing absurd characters that don't actually look like they could exist they like loud, flashy, electro, weird shit. We all know that. That's what it boils down to it's unrealistic not meant to be taken as some type of deep solid fact about the Japanese people. It's entertainment.

No self hate involved and I agree with deltronz about you having to really have to study and take a look at modern Japanese culture to fully understand. On top of that Japanese peoples skin is not fucking yellow lol just like our skin isn't actually colored black. Japanese people are some of the most pale people you'll meet.

I'd say that japan and it's people like a balance between the new western culture and their traditional culture. They like the best of both worlds and they're quite proud of their history and traditions.

This is true Buk they also (like most artist) were inspired and influenced by Disney.

But I don't think it's them aiming for their art work to look white. It's just a style nothing more nothing less.

Sorry, I have no idea what you typed beyond this point. I had to stop here since you've already stated something that is no more true than to say there are no naturally red haired black people (I don't have red hair, but my uncle does naturally). And in case you're wondering, YES I have met a Japanese person with naturally blonde hair. And YES, his parents were both Japanese. What's interesting to note is that has nothing to do with why Naruto has blonde hair. Just stating some facts.

Again, look beyond yourself a bit when examining this issue, or else your conclusion will continue to be as simple as...

"Well, Tetsu from Akira has bigger eyes than any Japanese person I've ever seen, so therefore Japanese people see themselves as white people."

Hahhahahaha I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees it...all dude has said in a nutshell despite the long drawn out bullshit is I live in Japan so I must know the answer but I won't tell you LOL

I always though those cartoon characters were made to exploit a European revering market as far as generating currency is concerned.

Shit that could be a factor too...I remember somebody posted a black male cartoonist but he is doing an animated show/book about some white girl on some Sex In The City shit...dude made it clear tho he was doing it for the $$$

We all know that Black people are the most genetically diverse group of people on earth.

I've met many black people with naturally red, or brown hair and different colored eyes.

Not to mention there are plenty of pictures online including this site of black people wearing naturally blond afro's

There are some asian people with naturally blond hair and light eyes.

It's rare but the genetics are there.

I still disagree about the characters not looking white but I see some sense in what you posted in the red...@ least you took the time to explain a valid point rather than just say "hey I took 3 years of Japanese and you guys are wrong and that's all I'm gonna say" type shit...

Thanks.

Just to clear up the portion you highlighted.

I was trying to express that the characters they draw regardless of their hair and eye color and if it makes them look like white.
To the Japanese it doesn't matter because they view those features as something to experiment with and not as something to indicate race because if that were the case Masashi Kishimoto would have drawn Naruto with more Asian features. Like I mentioned before he's been quoted as saying that his characters are japanese and his story is japanese. The character design is just that...character design. A style he likes to draw in.

All your posts sound like you are dancing around the issue ... you have yet to answer the question directly ... IMO you are biased and not being truthful ... maybe being a black man in Japan you dont want to admit there is someone they view on a higher scale ... I dont know ... but we dont need to live there to know that some have issues cuz many people in many places have issues with this and the Japanese are no exception

Interesting response but you are way the fuck off. Why the fuck do alot of these characters have white skin. They worship the white man.

Pretty much ... I dont understand why posters are in here acting like self hate issues dont go beyond blacks ... damn near every other race has issues with this ... the white man has mind fucked everyone into believing "white is right" and the effects of that are everywhere ... people need to wake the fuck up

"Because to them white is the Default Human Being."

This quote is really fucked up and speaks volumes

He is very biased when it comes to anything Japanese related ... he puts them on a very high scale over everyone else and acts like they have no wrongs when they are just as and in some cases worse than other places

I was told years ago that they wanted the characters to "look white" or American because of the "cool factor" so they overemphasized the "eyes" by making them rounder.

YES they are drawing WHITE PEOPLE. Don't fool yourselves and make bullshit excuses for the bullshit behavior of their artists.

Any excuse given other than that is fucking bullshit.

As a child when I first started drawing comics I drew "white characters" mainly because that's what I was exposed to as a child "reading comics". It wasn't until I got older and became more conscious (we all go through that except for Halo for some reason) that I started to learn to draw black people more. By the time I was adult I never created or drew characters that weren't black. Japanese are in love with White culture just like they fell in love with rock and roll.

They believe it makes their characters more exotic to feature them as white. That's it and that's all.

I think you've skimmed my other posts instead of reading all of them in this thread. I already stated I've faced discrimination here (and even went the extra steps to have shop owners take down the "black sambo" figurines whenever I saw them up. I was able to get nearly all I approached to take them down after breaking down the history a bit (which in all cases they were unaware of and oddly didn't get why they were offensive).

Considering I have faced some discrimination while I've lived/worked here, I don't get why I would all the sudden feel the need to be untruthful when it comes to Japanese culture. One thing I have noticed it has become a running gag almost to post a monthly "Oh those crazy Japs!! Look at this stupid shit!" type of posts. Some I comment on, most I don't.

On this issue, however, it's mostly Western misconceptions of what is going through the mind of Japanese people that are permeating these responses.

You say I don't answer the question directly, and you are right. I'm not. Why? As I stated in my original post in this thread I've already explained the reasoning behind this issue last year when it was brought up. It was quickly dismissed. So I'm not going to go over it all over again. Besides, someone else already did in this thread, so that should suffice.

You used the "Because to them white is the Default Human Being," as if that's how most Japanese people feel. That's really inaccurate. There are those who think that way, but the overwhelming majority don't.

I will say this, I agree with what you stated about self-hate. It exists in all races (I never stated I thought it only existed in black people, can you find where I did?). Japanese are no exception (as I said in my original post when I mentioned the "brainwashed zombies"). Self-hate, however, isn't the reasoning for why many cartoon characters in Japan look the way they do. Many in here are so convinced that's the reason. Back in the day, one of my friends in college while in Japan said she wished she was white. If given the chance, she'd hop into the body of a white girl. Does she suffer from self-hate? I'd say so.

Basically...dude is predictable like that...if you say anything that doesn't praise Japanese culture this nigga will come to the rescue...this is def not his 1st time carrying on like this...

Now you're making up nonsense. I've been pretty consistent with all races of people on here (more often than not, going against those who were quick to throw blacks under a bus). I'm far more "pro-black" than anything else. But hey, if making things up makes you feel better, more power to you.

Exactly!!!

But I edited that post though (before I saw you quoted it)cuz he is still a cool poster IMO and I didn't want to offend him ... but what's done is done now lmaoooooo

I appreciate the back-handed compliment, but the part in bold is complete bullshit. Again, why would I put the Japanese on "a very high scale over everyone else," but then openly admit that I've faced discrimination since I've been here? Makes no sense. For people so "high scale over everyone else," it is astonishing that you will still see Minstrel show type of black figurines in certain places.

Furthermore, I'm curious, can you cite a specific case where I've said something even remotely close to the Japanese being superior human beings? Master race? Or something to that effect?

My main thing when it comes to Japan is that many things are misunderstood by Americans (and vice-versa, the Japanese misunderstand many things about Americans). Having lived a 3rd of my life in Japan I have the unique experience of getting a closer sense of balance than some people want or care to get.

this means he is delusional.

I can't change what you believe.

But you just posted the source of the style of art that is anime and manga.

From U.S. animation where they get the shape of the eyes from (think Disney or Warner Brothers) from their own traditional art which looks a lot like black and white manga.

Usually people base their argument on seeing the big eyes and hair color not natural to Asian people.

They associate big blue eyes and blond hair with white folk.

But it makes no sense to say that Japanese people are praising white feautres in their art because in the same scene you'll see another character with purple hair and orange eyes and possibly a darker skin tone...

Because manga is typically drawn/printed in black-and white. Look at 'regular' Asian features, then think of the hundreds/thousands of manga series that have been created. It might be hard to tell the difference between one character from another, and from one book to another. Hence different colored hair and eyes. It's all stylized pulp entertainment anyway that usually doesn't aim for realism.

They believe it makes their characters more exotic to feature them as white. That's it and that's all.

Dray' you're American though...born and raised, yes?

Our culture is way different than Japanese culture.

We got to experience way more different cultures all in one place and with that the extreme racism and the brain washing that comes along with it.

Japan didn't have to suffer the same white elitism on the scale we have to so I wouldn't say that they're praising the white is right type of philosophy.

For along time they were pretty much isolated and didn't experience any of the different people or cultures of the world and when they did get a chance to see modern western art especially American animation most of the animation they watched featured animal Characters not humans...

Agree 1000% this isn't even an isolated attack on Japanese...MANY people are color struck...imo even some dark hair dark eyed white folks...hell look at Hollywood...run by white people (majority not blond)...you will hardly find a blond hair and blue eyed VILLAIN/Negative Dipiction in a big budget movie...MAYBE if they have a European or Russian accent, MAYBE
Basically...dude is predictable like that...if you say anything that doesn't praise Japanese culture this nigga will come to the rescue...this is def not his 1st time carrying on like this...

Yeah he did this the last time. :smh:
Exactly!!!

But I edited that post though (before I saw you quoted it)cuz he is still a cool poster IMO and I didn't want to offend him ... but what's done is done now lmaoooooo

He is very biased when it comes to anything Japanese related ... he puts them on a very high scale over everyone else and acts like they have no wrongs when they are just as and in some cases worse than other places

c/s again...that's funny I ALSO edited my first response, cause he is a positive brother for the most part that has been respectful in the posts I have seen and he does contribute

But we all (def including myself) are irrational or unreasonable about SOMETHING imo so it's nothing wrong if this is his "thing" he is a bit biased about ... which I can totally understand being that he is a japanese transplant at this point

went the extra steps to have shop owners take down the "black sambo" figurines whenever I saw them up. I was able to get nearly all I approached to take them down after breaking down the history a bit

GOOD!!!!

Considering I have faced some discrimination while I've lived/worked here, I don't get why I would all the sudden feel the need to be untruthful when it comes to Japanese culture.

From the posts I have read you seem to always make it sound so peachy

This is my first time reading you say anything about being discriminated against

I figured you would have had to have experienced some discrimination down there

On this issue, however, it's mostly Western misconceptions of what is going through the mind of Japanese people that are permeating these responses.

The thing is that actions speak louder than words ... no one is expecting them to come right out and say "we have self hate issues" ... but their actions are showing it

You used the "Because to them white is the Default Human Being," as if that's how most Japanese people feel. That's really inaccurate. There are those who think that way, but the overwhelming majority don't.

Oh I dont think they all feel like that at all ... but I mos def think its more than you are stating, from what I see

I will say this, I agree with what you stated about self-hate. It exists in all races (I never stated I thought it only existed in black people, can you find where I did?).

I was speaking in general, that wasn't directed at you

Japanese are no exception (as I said in my original post when I mentioned the "brainwashed zombies"). Self-hate, however, isn't the reasoning for why many cartoon characters in Japan look the way they do. Many in here are so convinced that's the reason.

Like I said earlier actions speak louder than words and they may say it isn't an issue but IMO it is ... people need to stop frontin (not you specifically) like the Europeans haven't influenced and mind fucked the world as much as they have

I appreciate the back-handed compliment

LMAO I didn't mean it like that but whatever

Furthermore, I'm curious, can you cite a specific case where I've said something even remotely close to the Japanese being superior human beings? Master race? Or something to that effect?

I have never seen you post those exact words ... its a feel I get from your posts in these sorts of threads ... and obviously I'm not the only one who got that vibe so its out there

But you mos def have a thang for Japanese broads and their culture which is odd to me but to each his own ... I really wasn't trying to disrespect you but I do feel you are 100% biased ... I think you are as biased to Japanese women/culture as Halo is to white womenculture ... again not trying to disrespect you cuz you aren't a basher or asshole like him but it is what it is

What are Japanese? are those people? what the hell do they look like? them and Hispanics who are these people you speak of?

Oh I remember I fucked one that look like one of those Japanese people but she was something else. With that said, I normally pay little actually, not even little no attention to Asians or Hispanics. Asians do random shit like run into shit and trip over shit when I walk pass them I guess it's to get attention or well maybe because(I dress like a mixture between Rob Dyrdek and Lil Wayne) so maybe they think I am going to rob them. :dunno:

Hispanics, they do shit for attention like look at me out of the corner of their eyes I guess to prove that they are tough but the last one that did that shit I almost murder him... like literally murder him.:lol::lol:

Bottom line, those people don't exists to me white people wouldn't either but due to years of murder and stealing you have to deal with them and their fucked up global system.

EXACTLY!!!

Why do you think there are so many blonde dyed white women out there ... the beauty standard is one even some of THEM cant reach which is a whole new level of fucked up lmaoooo

c/s again...that's funny I ALSO edited my first response, cause he is a positive brother for the most part that has been respectful in the posts I have seen and he does [/B]contribute

Yeah I agree with all you posted ... we are all a little biased about something that is close to us, including myself

Basically...was just about to say this...

Ok so its not just me who noticed it lmaoooo

I always though those cartoon characters were made to exploit a European revering market as far as generating currency is concerned.

Believe it or not, the idea of Anime and Manga being written and developed for the world audience is a recent thing. It wasn't until the bubble in the early 2000s when US companies were bidding millions for just about anything they developed and was footing the bill for new episodes of popular shows that were all but forgotten in Japan that they realized what they had. Then the bubble burst...

Nowadays, expecting everything to go for millions overseas is the problem. They still think the material is worth a premium, when it's gone back to how it was in the 90s where universal stories go overseas and things 'very Japanese' largely stay in Japan or the otaku circuit.
