Read what I wrote an hour before this game. I said the game would depend on hustle. I said the Nigerians must not cede the midfield as South Africa did. All these things are true. Fuck the goal, it came from a corner, nothing you can do about it. What I do not like are the tactics of this coach, whose team is not hustling. Anyone who has watched Argentina knows that their MO is opportunism. You have to give them a taste of their own medicine. Challenge their defenders by attacking their ball possession, good things can come out of that. Nigeria gains nothing by letting the ball pass through their front line. Secondly, they need to make more passes in the midfield and use their superior foot speed. This game is not out of reach, and the coach will earn his pay in the second half..
On the goal, Argentina were up to their dirty tricks holding the Nigeria defender out of the way. This was not an accident, the play was designed that way I am sure...But what can you do, the ref missed the call.
Do you remember the atmosphere the Koreans made for their side in 2002? The crowd willed them into the semis....I hope the supporters of the Ivorians, Ghanaians et al. actually show up and create atmosphere at their matches....
