This thread was just what I needed....I have working experience as a Database Analyst and I would like to get into the field of database administration. A friend of mine has the Microsoft Certified DBA certification (MCDBA) for sql server 2005. I was wondering should this be a good place to start or should I go the Oracle 10g route and get their certification. Not sure as to which one would have me at more of a advantage in the workforce. Could someone give me some type of advice?...Thanks!

I live in Seattle, Land of Microsoft and start-ups. It really depends on what you want to do? Want to work for Fortune 500 companies or start-ups? I wouldn't get Oracle cert unless you have a need for it. Oracle is getting used less and less in the corporate environment due to high cost of Oracle software and open-source solutions’ effectiveness.

MS certs are helpful, ( BTW, do you know that MCDBA is getting phased out and the new cert standard will be MCITP: Database Administrator?) , but not necessary, unless you don’t have a college degree. If so, then I would advice going back to school.

But my best advice will be lean towards more into software development, especially RIA and mobile apps. I’ve worked as a Senior SDE for Microsoft, MySpace, Washington Mutual (now JP Morgan Chase), Amazon and several start-ups, and the way I see it is that databases are going into the cloud and the need for local admins will be less and less. Why mess around with load balancers, replication, etc., when you access the power of the Amazon EC2 and SimpleDB or Google BigTable for literally pennies on the dollar? Look at these prices:

First of all, I want to be clear that I specifically used the words “less and less” meaning that the demand of local DBA will decline in the future. I don’t mean that they will be completely phased out, because these professionals will always be needed. Local admins & network engineers will be in the same boat. Dependence will decrease over time. Of course this my opinion, highly educated and almost always right opinion, but opinion nonetheless.

I don’t know where you live but ‘round here “cloud computing” is a serious buzz word. I’ve traveled to conferences in SF, NY & Chicago and its pretty serious there, too. If you search around, all the big boys devote huge resources into it:

You can easily see why. It’s cost effective. No more dealing with server hardware, hard drives, RAID config, failure rate, etc. Simply, just pay for what you use.

Also, there is also push for SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) products. That will further reduce the need for local servers.
Thus, I would advise anyone to get into the software developer game. SDE will always be in demand. In fact there are more jobs then SDEs, that’s why HB-1 visas are so important to tech companies. They help fulfill the demand, but more is needed.

I did some search in Atlanta Craigslist and found about:
10,000 jobs on software development
900 jobs on network engineers (40 jobs for Cisco)
300 jobs on IT/admins/A+

It’s about the same ratio everywhere. You can see this ratio on Joel on Software Job Board.

That VMWare cert has taken precedence since I don't have to pay for it and can study at the job, as long as I do my sh*t.

I recently attended an IBM seminar, I can tell you that cloud computing is getting alot of push, but there are many issues still address such as privacy and where does your data is stored in terms of compliance act.

Software development can be split into two main branches, desktop/platform and web.

Platform programming is when you target specific hardware/OS, such as Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Mainframe, mobile apps (Palm, WinMobile, iPhone/iPad, BlackBerry, etc) and game machines (Xbox 360, PlayStation, Nintendo).

Web programming is obviously programming for the web. BTW, web programming itself can be split into two sub-categories: open-source and .NET platforms.

My advice is choose where your "desire" lies, meaning what do you want to program? Games? Mobile apps? Cutting edge websites?

As to answer your question on what is the easiest to learn, its web development. Mostly because it deals with scripting languages and there is no need for compiling. I can give you more specific advise, but you need to answer some questions.

1) Are you wanting to be a “cowboy coder” or be part of a team?

Im in Oracle 11g and Linux cert class now. My county will pay for 1 more cert class up to 5k. Do you think I should do PL/SQL or VMWARE or any suggestions. I allready have A+, N+. I want to get into the computer field

Another piece of info for those that didnt know. If you are unemployed your county will pay up to 5k for you to take a cert class.
