Gizmodo: Outdoor Green Screen Use On TV Is Insane

i knew they did shit like that for the SNOW STORMS and BLIZZARDS but I had no idea they weren't on real city streets.

Still think BIN LADEN is REAL?

Still think 9-11 really happened? (Ok.. im pushin it with this one )

Nothing new. It's crazy how much computers have changed so much in the world. As an artist I get away with things that in the 90's required me to actually go to the art store and buy materials.

knew they did things like this but not to the extant they show here. love to land a job doing the fx

not bad, you dont really notice it because you're paying attention to the characters but if you look at the backgrounds they are a little blurry, cool trick though

you can tell by looking at the edges of the actors. if the edge/outline of an actor is sharp or hard, green screen. lazy compositing.

i used to work in special efx and did shit like this for 4 years. i can tell most of the time. gotta soften those edges.

i wonder how many people are in prison over technology like this and photoshop

its crazy how fat technology has come

5 star thread!

99% of these have no hard edges dude.... i know exactly what you mean though.. but this is HQ shit...

You're always gonna have a hard time. My boy is in effects for Lucas and says the same thing.

i had no idea that the tech with green screens improved so much- i guess thats the point

why havent costs gone down for not having to shoot on location? are they pushing the money elsewhere?

the scene with the Ugly Betty chick. that shit was super apparent.

i watch TV and i'll see edges. when i worked on this shit, we had a PaintBox system where we would fucking rotoscope shit. :smh:. i spent weeks working on a couple of seconds of video. that's where i learned how to feather edges. still have nightmares about that shit.

one of the dudes i worked with got an offer from ILM. packed up and moved out to San Fran. dude is still there and that was offer 12 years ago. i had to get out of that industry. shit was fuckin up they way i was looking at the world. :smh:

So what happens when a clever editor w/ this tech decides he wants to use found footage to say...make it look like Obama had a meeting with Hamas? You KNOW that only 10% of the people who see THAT on the web will bother to check is veracity....
....

This ain't shit compared to something I saw on Science of the Movies last year. They had some AI boosted photoshop shit that would paint a six pack over a beer belly and it looked real. They turned a chick who had just had a baby into a damn bikini model! These cats were moving around and flexing and the computer adapted to all that shit.

first of all, we would edit in a dark ass suite by yourself for at least 8 hours and sometimes 12-14 hours a day.

then, you would spend a week working on one scene which could be less than 1 second long (30 frames). so you would see the same shit over and over and over again.

then, cause you were working on special effects, you developed an eye for what's real and what's fake and computer graphics and special effects. i couldn't enjoy tv or movies anymore because i'd try to figure out what work was done, what was real/fake, or how to do a better effect.

lastly, the deadlines were super-intense cause working post production, you were the last leg. it was all on you.

after 4 1/2 years, i left the business. some of my co-workers stuck it out at the agency and then opened up their own shop and have done really well for themselves. i had to give it up and focus on my creative aspirations. i have ZERO regrets. the pay can be great. their is always work out there, but it's a thankless, stressful job.

This shit is amazing. Now that Spartacus shit on Starz on the other hand is some of the worst shit I have ever seen. That shit is fake in almost every aspect.

:smh::smh::smh:

Good thread. I guess that's how they did this video? Figured it was fake cause all the store signs are reversed.
