The word "Negro" in and of itself isn't racist and Reid's comments were impolitic but they weren't racist. Nothing "tomish" about being honest and not falling for the trap set by people who either are racist or support people that are racist.

Context and intent are important and Reid's comments, in context and with his intent in mind, weren't racist. Someone else can feel differently but if just using the word makes him racist, I say they're wrong.

This is true. The term "Black" was not used as a respectful term universally until 1968. The Black Panthers made it an issue, James Brown made it popular. In fact if you can find actual Malcolm X videos, he described us and himself has Negro, Field Negro and House Negro. My light skinned Grandmother, during the 1960s refused to refer to herself as 'Black'. She was content with being called 'colored'. She was from the pre depression generation. Prior to the 1920s Black folk describe themselves as Africans even though at that time there were very few Black people in the US that did not have at least 150 years of family lineage in the United States. It’s much ado about nothing.
