Who could resist the months of hype that paved the way for Apple's iPad debut last week? Apparently not Google, which has shown its interest in tablet computing with its browser-based Chrome OS.

On Monday, Glen Murphy, a user interface designer for Google's Chrome browser and the Chrome operating system based on it, pointed to image and video concepts of a Chrome OS-based tablet that went live two days before the iPad launch. Apparently nobody noticed initially, because only now did Murphy tweet, "Apparently our tablet mocks have been unearthed."

The site also shows the array of devices Google envisions for Chrome OS.

"While its primary focus is Netbooks, Chrome OS could eventually scale to a wide variety of devices. Each would have vastly different input methods, available screen space, and processing power," according to the Chromium form factors site. Chromium is the name of the open-source developer project that underlies the branded Chrome product.

It's possible that Chrome OS could be an easier sell on tablets than on Netbooks, the class of device on which Google said it plans to launch Chrome OS. Netbooks often are used as general-purpose PCs, so the browser-based philosophy of Chrome OS is a more jarring transition.

Today's tablets, in contrast, tend to focus more on a collection of specialized uses such as reading books, surfing the Net, and chores that only require light typing. With that approach, Chrome OS's break from the PC world could be less jarring. The tablet market isn't as big as the Netbook market, though.

The ideas are only mock-ups, but Google has established itself as a real if not dominant force in the computing industry. Its Android mobile phone operating system is increasingly influential, and its Chrome browser continues to steadily grow in usage.

The tablet mock-ups show a variety of Chrome OS tablet ideas, including a virtual keyboard taking up the bottom half of the screen or detached and floating as a separate window. Also included are a slideshow mode, an application launcher, sidebar-mounted browser tabs, and a pop-up contextual menu.

The video mock-up shows a much larger tablet, with hands resizing and moving windows through the multitouch interface, scrolling through text, and typing a search query.

It's all very rough at this stage, but none of it is too remote from a multitouch-enabled version of the Chrome OS. Google plans to debut Chrome OS in Netbooks later this year, and development of the open-source operating system is well under way.

Google didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about its plans for Chrome OS tablets.

Computing companies have been trying to make tablets for years, with little success. Apple hopes its design will change that with its iPad selling from $499 to $829. It's more of an iPhone with a large screen than a MacBook with no keyboard.

Google is taking a different approach with Chrome OS. Instead of programs running straight on the computer's hardware and its underlying Linux operating system, Chrome OS applications run directly in the browser. What's similar to the iPad, though, is that both have somewhat of an applications head start compared with a computing platform that's starting from scratch: the iPad can run existing iPhone apps, and Chrome OS can run existing Web applications such as Google Docs.

One thing that's changed since early tablet years is the arrival of e-book readers as a real phenomenon. Amazon's Kindle is the most notable example, but there are others, and Apple touted book reading with the iPad. Google, it should be noted, has a conduit to millions of books via its Google Books service.

Given that Apple chose to use a variation of its iPhone OS for the iPad, it's interesting but not terribly surprising that Google chose to use Chrome OS rather than its phone operating system, Android. In the big picture, Google clearly hopes the browser will be the foundation for applications, letting them run more easily on a multitude of devices.

Android uses a variation of Oracle's Java technology as a program foundation. Perhaps ironically, Java was launched with the motto for programmers of "write once, run anywhere," and it is that vision Google is trying to realize with Web applications.

Competition is always good for what matters most-the consumers!:yes:
Now, who's next to throw their hat in the ring?

:yes::yes:

But since Chrome OS is open source.. will be a lot of players.... manufacturers will adopt it like they have with Android on mobile devices..
This is the feature I do like, is the fact it's a full desktop OS. Reason why I like it? Is because I can just use my software that I use on my other PCs & laptops. Don't get me wrong, I like and understand apps on mobile devices, but I'm looking to use these new slates/tablets devices for home, so I really have no use fo apps per say. Apps, on all mobile platforms are great so far, regardless, if its Apple, Android, Symbian, WinMo, etc. and I expect them to get better on mobile devices.

WRONG!!!

Chrome OS is simply aggregating all of Google's Web Services into a browser based OS. Please know what you are talking about before you open your mouth. The only apps that will run in Chrome OS are Web Apps.

Nigga You are Dumb as Shit. Thats the only kind of Applications that will be running on Chrome OS.:lol::lol:

Just Web based Apps, see the browser tabs bitch?:lol::lol:

Google doesn't want you storing shit on your computer, they would rather you use the "cloud", thats exactly what dude said in the demo! So how great is that? You dont own your shit and cant access it unless you are connected in Googles "cloud", but Google can have access to it and turn it over to 5-0 at their leisure, YAY Google!!!

:lol: where are the Ipad evangelists ???

Over here laughing at you niggas cheering on a product that dont exist cuz you think it might challenge Apple. Knowing good and damn well that y'all don't even understand what Chrome OS is nor even understand that Chrome is Safari just with Google's custom Javascript engine; V8.

In other words, Google took Apple's sandboxed tab API (for you ignant niggas, that means if you have 4 browser tabs open and one of them is running a shitty designed web plugin like, oh, I dont know, FLASH! and it make the page slow, you can kill just that tab without affecting the rest of the browser) and is applying into an OS that runs just web based apps and only web based apps. Yeah, you niggas gonna love it!:lol::lol:

lmaooooooooo

this isnt competition

I think Google just likes fucking with Apple

Oh well, just have to wait on HP, Archos, Dell, & HTC. Still like that other companies are jumping in to push the level of getting things right to a higher level of perfection from all companies!:yes:

Okay designs I guess, but that's a crappy idea. I see no point in chrome. Google should stick to android and leave chrome alone

actually google will have some applications that won't just be cloud based on this. its a spin off of ubuntu so it will share the same libraries. with the added cloud based apps that google will design and invite other developers to design. since its open source you will be able to make it look how you want if u don't want to stick to just the tabs look. i've used ubuntu its a great os it just needs some polish and better developers it already supports most everything out with google adding their tech touch to it things should run smoother and give the open source community a greater voice.

think about it like this...in ubuntu a user can great os x in everyway and even enhance somethings. now add google's money and know-how and name.

get it?

Chrome OS, if done right and from the looks of how google is doing things it will be; will be a very good OS for users who want away from windows and mac os.

yup....steve jobs goes at them and says their bullshit...now android phones are starting to get multitouch...then these things get leaked....jobs may have just upped the ante in ways he never imagined.

its gonna be great.

Jobs got played by Eric Schmidt.... He sat on their board of directors and peeped all their plans.. by the time Apple booted him, it was too late... Google was going to move in this direction anyway in terms of creating their mobile software stack for smart phones, laptops, etc...but Im sure they got a real good glimpse of the future by Schmidt sitting on that board... Im sure that is why Jobs is really pissed... that he willingly let the enemy in...

Apple is going to win the short term battles (next 3-4 years) but they will probably lose the war again (how they did with microsoft) by allowing Google to dominate the OS market for smart mobile devices by providing an open source alternative through Chrome OS, Android, etc..

pretty much...apple only hold 10 percent of the os market anyway. google can take that based on name recognition and better products. jobs is arrogant he thinks his 10 percent market share can dictate the future of the web. google is involved in the building of web 2.0 apple is not. google is making little moves that people write off but they r heavy into the development of the future internet.

jobs thinks this is an os war. google is just fucking with apple now. if chrome shoots out a great success and gets the entire open source community down with them they just need to take a little away from windows to take over mac os' marketshare. hell google provides email service to a shitload of universities and business i read i doubt it will be hard to sell them on easy to manage virus free chrome os machines.

take away the iphone or mac os and what is apple?

take away chrome os and what is google?

thats where the power lies.

jobs shoulda not talked that shit.

Google is plannin to eat Apple's lunch for real.

Actually these muthafuckas wanna eat everyone's lunch. Fuckin with TelCos..... creating windfarms and shit.

The term data farm has always scared me, so I stopped using goog and switched to bing just to slow down that company.

Thats also incorrect. He believes the products Apple introduces have the capability to influence markets and industries to Apple's benefit (so far thats been true with iTunes, iPod, iPhone, etc.). Also that measly 10% is fucking up the rest of the computer industry (other manufacturers cant sell $1000+ computers anymore, and are stuck making cheap low quality products). Imagine if they grew to 20%. You can say goodbye to a lot of PC Manufacturers when that happens...

Google's success in the PC Market, would hurt Microsoft. Chrome offers nothing that appeals to most people who purchase Mac computers. Especially when it comes to software (wheres a Chrome alternative for Logic, Final Cut, iLife, or even Adobe CS, etc.)

Apple and Google are two entirely different companies. This comparison is ridiculous. Its like me saying you take away search and advertising from Google and let them rely on Chrome OS and the Nexus One... Google would cave in on itself. The money Google makes from Search and Advertising allows it take some risks and move into other markets. Same way Apple's success with the Mac and the iPhone allow it to move into other markets. Their are both powerful in their own right.

And as far as I'm concerned if it keeps competition healthy, Steve can talk all the shit he wants. I'm sure Eric is at Google behind closed doors running his mouth as well.

:hmm:

The Nexus 1 is better than the iphone tech wise as is the DROID. Apple's advantage is apps and its fanbase. The apps should equal out by end of the year and the fanbase as well. Google products other than DROID aren't marketed as well.

Toshiba's are better than Mac's and a lot of pc makers sell 1000 buck pc's...

itunes was nothing before the ipod. And even then creative mp3's players are better quality than ipod's. the pc market including the non-apple music suppliers are fragmented. apple's closed garden works in that regard.
Google is open but they r also bringing companies to the fore with them. HTC's profits sky rocketed off of the hero and the g1 and the mytouch. They brough motorola back from the dead. and are making phone makers abandon winmo for androids. google is shifting the mobile industry in ways apple can't.
Now it seems they will be bringing that approach to the computer market.

As for the alternatives to apple programs, chrome hasn't even been released and as i explained they are working with the ubuntu team and have access to a vast linux library with some programs that are better than apple's.. Google's approach is small...netbooks then tablets get into the market...thats why apple rushed the tampon they r trying to kill the netbook market before chrome can take it over.

jobs purchased lala b/c google wanted it. he purchased an ad firm to go against google. he's been playing with google for a minute when all google had was android. but he never said shit in public now he has and google is letting shit out. multi-touch, tablet leaks... google's heads can talk shit much as they want in private. apple cannot talk shit in public
remember steve jobs was forced out of apple in the 80's b/c of his attitude...dude talks too much shit and makes enemies..even within his own company...

he does these little bitch moves and pats himself on the back. google says nothing.

google without android is google an ad company a search engine company.

apple without the software is one loud mouth talking shit.

point is apple if they were so great should have more than 10 percent share. with everyone being fed up with m'soft they have remained at 10 percent.
the iphone is so great it can't overtake nokia for number one world wide even if jobs lies and says they have.

google in less than 2 years has started the conversation...people no longer look automatically at iphone or blackberry's...they aren't just choosing dumbphones they are looking at android devices....

now they are launching an alternative to windows with a huge library of programs but with no viruses like mac...maybe less polished but i doubt consumers care for look that much if they can get pc's laptops tablets that aren't expensive but run great quality applications from great pc makers.

google just needs to take from windows to overjump mac's 10 percent then mac will have the power to influence no one.

jobs knows it thats y his every move now is to counter google's past and future moves.

They dont make better products homie, thats the main problem

Google >>>

This should be cool... w/ Google Voice integration it will be great. Not sure Chrome OS is ready for prime time yet though...

Well I'll just say it like this, I can definitely back up my statements with actual facts and numbers (especially the $1000+ PC sales, last quarter 90% were Apple computers). Here's some Apple perspective for you since youre kinda bent on that 10% market share idea (which in all actuality means nothing). 10 years ago, Apple had a 2% market share. Their growth to a measly 10% has reeked havoc in the PC market, marginalized PC manufacturers in the sub $1000 price ranged, and allowed Apple to expand into other markets. As long as Apple continues to report profits every quarter (which they have for almost the last 10 years), they are winning.

I mean its coo that youre a fan of Google, I am as well, but the Google/Apple comparison just isnt there yet (I mean the CEO of Google was on the Apple board just a few months ago). Right now, they only compete in 1 market right now, smart phones (and they have yet to put a dent in the growth of the iPhone even with the multiple handsets out there). Microsoft is the major loser here because they are being attacked from multiple fronts by both Apple AND Google.

All moves Apple has made in regards to cloud computing is to allow their iTunes service to grow and evolve. In regards to Mobile Ads, it's to keep other ad companies (especially Google) from expanding their Ad business into their App Store. Apple created this market, and they want to hold onto it.

As far as Chrome... No matter how hopeful you may be, its not fucking with OSX for the simple fact "Its Not Trying To". Every movie you watch, commercial you see on TV, Album you listen to, Magazine you read, etc.. are most likely created on a Mac. You cant get that type of power from the cloud, and youre not gonna see Chrome installed on any computer targeting users who needs those type of capabilities (just go to Apple.com and check out Final Cut Pro and you'll see why I say Chrome aint fucking with OSX).

But beyond all that. Google is good at providing simple, non-flashy, lightweight solutions that are suited toward productivity, communication, and collaboration. Chrome will be no different, mark my words (and thats not a bad thing).

I had to correct you on this one, Avid>>>>> Final cut. If i'm not wrong, the industry uses avid more. You are a apple evangelist .

why is it Apple is like the only innovative tech company?

this tablet idea is hardly unique, techcrunch was talking about doing its own tablet a couple years ago. shit I was wanting a good tablet for at least 5 years, its BEEN doable.

Google is a lame follower with no creativity, just like Microsoft.

Dude, Apple's not even at 10% anymore. As a matter of fact they are LOSING market share. You talking about doubling their market share but doubling a single digit ain't finna break the PC companies.

Fall back with that nonsense. Even if they had 20% the other folks got 80%.
Men lie, women lie, NUMBERS DON'T.
