Official Apple Tablet (general tablet market) thread. Constantly updated

NEVER BEEN A FAN BOY OF ANYONE BUT I MUST SAY THIS, WHEN I SWITCHED FROM PC TO MAC, I TOO BECAME A BELIEVER NOT A FANBOY BUT A BELIEVER!, WHEN I GOT THE IPHONE AND THE APPS ABILITY, I WAS A BELIEVER! BUT "MIND U ,I HAD "TREO650" B4 THAT SO I KNEW TOUCH SCREEN AND SUCH BUT THE APPS WORKED BETTER AND WHERE 1000% CHEAPER ON THE IPHONE THAN THE TREO AND MY USER EXPERIENCE WAS SUPERIOR,(TREO REALLY BLEW A CHANCE TO IMPROVE AND TAKE THE WORLD INTO NEW SMARTPHONE TERRITORY BUT I GUESS THEY WERE SLOW TO CHANGE, THATS WHERE APPLE CAME IN AND STOLE MOST OF THE TREO IDEAS AND MADE THE IPHONE !! :smh::smh: BUT I STIIL DONT GET WHY MACS HAVE TO COST SO MUCH!! ,THATS ONE PART OF MAC I DONT BELIEVE IN , I ALWAYS BUY MY MAC USED, ITS BETTR VALUE IN MY VIEW , NOW.... ,THIS TABLET THING?...MEHHH.. I DONT KNOW, I BELIEVE BUT I BELIEVE ITS ALL A HYPE :smh:, REASON?

1: WHY WOULD I WANT A SCREEN THAT CANT STAND ON ITS OWN TO PLAY GAMES?
1B:WHO HOLDS THE SCREEN UP WHILE WE PLAY THE GAMES WHY NOT JUST PLAY IT ON THE TV ON COMPUTER SCREEN?
2: WHY WOULD I WANT TO MAKE A CALL ON THIS THING?
3: THE SIZE WHILE NOT BAD IS STILL ONLY GOOD FOR READING KINDLE FORMAT BOOKS BUT NOT AT $300/$400+
4:NOTEBOOKS ARE COMFORTABLE TO READ FROM AND USE BUT HOW DO WE GO ABOUT USING THIS THING, IF I PLACE IT ON MY LAP I HAVE TO BEND MY NECK DOWNWARDS TO USE IT "CAN SOMEONE SAY "NECKPAIN"

IDK .. IDK BUT MAYBE FANCOUNTRY CAN REDEEM IT AND SHOW ME SOMETHING ITS REALLY GOOD FOR :confused:

good points.

assist.

This is not an iPad app (yet), but it's just a sample of what could be built by 3rd-party developers...

This is more of what I was expecting to see today if they would have made an interface like this it would be a killer

 @ cats doing everything in their power to justify why the iPad is not good. I have a solution... don't buy it..

This is more of what I was expecting to see today if they would have made an interface like this it would be a killer

yeah. i've seen Bumptop before. very cool.

keep in mind. Apple likes to keep it simple. Bumptop is far from intuitive. there is a learning curve to it which makes it gen pop unfriendly. crawl, before you walk, walk before you run.

but parents who will want their kids to have a 'portable' device that can play video games AND do something 'productive' may be interested.

Right now, people have a gaming console.
And they have a computer / laptop.

it's still early in the game. the device just dropped today.
I think the issue is that people look at it say...'it doesn't do x,y,z, or it's a tablet PC, or it's just a big phone, or whatever."

but future software / content will help sell units.

in 2 years, when you can play video games, or tele-conference, or do a bunch of different things on it... prolly be the market leader of 'crossover' devices.

apple can't invent everything.
this gives software developers a new platform to create new stuff.

This tampon is no way a great gaming device. Pleae dont even mention it. My iphone is for toy games. Real games must have easy controls, not screen tilting.

DISCLAIMER...NO HATE HERE FROM ME JUST POSTING WHAT i'VE BEEN COMING ACROSS

500x_nothanksipad.jpg

A lot of people are psyched about the iPad. Not me! My god, am I underwhelmed by it. It has some absolutely backbreaking failures that will make buying one the last thing I would want to do. Updated

Big, Ugly Bezel
Have you seen the bezel on this thing?! It's huge! I know you don't want to accidentally input a command when your thumb is holding it, but come on.

No Multitasking
This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.

No Cameras
No front facing camera is one thing. But no back facing camera either? Why the hell not? I can't imagine what the downside was for including at least one camera. Could this thing not handle video iChat?

Touch Keyboard
So much for Apple revolutionizing tablet inputs; this is the same big, ugly touchscreen keyboard we've seen on other tablets, and unless you're lying on the couch with your knees propping it up, it'll be awkward to use.

No HDMI Out
Want to watch those nice HD videos you downloaded from iTunes on your TV? Too damned bad! If you were truly loyal, you'd just buy an AppleTV already.

The Name iPad
Get ready for Maxi pad jokes, and lots of 'em!

No Flash
No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.

Adapters, Adapters, Adapters
So much for those smooth lines. If you want to plug anything into this, such as a digital camera, you need all sorts of ugly adapters. You need an adapter for USB for god's sake.

Update: Why stop at 8? Here are more things we are discovering that suck about the iPad.

It's Not Widescreen
Widescreen movies look lousy on this thing thanks to its 4:3 screen, according to Blam, who checked out some of Star Trek on one. It's like owning a 4:3 TV all over again!

Doesn't Support T-Mobile 3G
Sure, it's "unlocked." But it won't work on T-Mobile, and it uses microSIMs that literally no one else uses.

Pretty much... I love my iPhone, but this tablet is crap. All the hype and this is all Apple comes up with?

This tampon is no way a great gaming device. Pleae dont even mention it. My iphone is for toy games. Real games must have easy controls, not screen tilting.

I guess other companies can build (3rd-party) gaming controllers.
Just plug it in. (or use a wireless 3rd-party controller :dunno:)

That BumpTop software, takes out a lot of steps that reduces the time to do something so simple. I'm diggin this, good find!:yes:

Adobe: Flash Apps Will Run On The iPad, Even Full Screen At Some Point

While Apple is being lamented here and there for not supporting Flash on its shiny new iPad – boy does Cupertino have a strong dislike for the platform – Adobe has already responded to the news on the official Flash Platform blog.

The blog post, unambiguously titled “Building iPad Applications with Flash”, is mostly just to remind people of the company’s Packager for iPhone product, which will enable developers to make Flash apps function on the iPhone / iPod Touch through a work-around whereby Flash apps can be easily converted into iPhone apps using Creative Suite 5 (CS5).

We’ve written before that this could turn 2010 into the year when approximately 2 million Flash developers could potentially start cooking up stuff for the iPhone en masse. You can now add the iPad to that, it seems.

The company notes:

We announced the Packager for iPhone at MAX 2009 which will allow Flash developers to create native iPhone applications and will be available in the upcoming version of Flash Pro CS5. This technology enables developers to create applications for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad (though applications will not initially take direct advantage of iPad’s new screen resolution). It is our intent to make it possible for Flash developers to build applications that can take advantage of the increased screen size and resolution of the iPad.

For that latter part, Adobe points to this article by Christian Cantrell, Product Manager and Application Developer on the AIR team. The article goes in depth about how developers can build apps using Flash with authoring with multiple screen sizes and resolutions in mind.

You won’t be able to fire up, say, Hulu through your browser on the iPhone or iPad any time soon, but Adobe appears determined to show the world that Flash has its place on Apple’s products one way or the other.

And it’s also sending a message to Flash developers that they can and should stick to the platform rather than look at other ways to join the App Store goldrush.

Not good enough for these haters.. someone will say "But it can't use Flash without using the CS5" :dunno:

Pretty much... I love my iPhone, but this tablet is crap. All the hype and this is all Apple comes up with?

It's an ebook reader. That was all this was going to be. Fanboys made it into something more than it is. As an ebook reader, it's not bad. it can do more like surf the web and do email but it's not a macbook replacement. Not even close and that makes it a fail on the part of Apple inc.

ctually i have sold some photgraphs to some publications. i have done the photographer thing. it helped me in the ad world when i was in it.

all that shit u mentioned requires multitasking.
i have shown clients/potential clients work in one set the lack of multitasking means i would have to close one thing open another and do the same thing.
clients don't give a shit about how fancy my tools are they want a solid creation. its all well and good if u want to be flashy but u need substance.
i have checked the videos on this especially the ones on engadget with their hands on. other than the turning pages thing i'm not impressed. it requires extra hand movements just to close an app...apple tried to get so fancy they over did the simple shit.
why would i in the medium of presentation waste time like that?
rule of thumb for me:

for every second you lose you lose a minute for every minute you lose an hour for every hour you're fired.

all this finger moving and two hand stuff is nice but for what?

i can save files to a folder launch the needed programs load from that folder and on the spot if the client wanted a picture fixed fire up a photo editor and fix it all without closing my main program.

on this i'd have to close my main program or my secondary program.

this device pure and simple is apple's display of arrogance. its a big ipod that u cannot use without support of another surface whether it be your arm or a table or a chair etc etc in the videos some of the movements required two hands. so how does it have an advantage over a netbook? it doesn't.

its runs iphone os 3.2 can you even develop programming language into that? i have been thinking about getting back into linux and programming in general this device would be useless to me if i did. its pretty much a bigger ipod with extra bells and whistles but it does nothing else beyond what a regular ipod or iphone does and it does less than a netbook, laptop, mac book, imac does. plus its on a 1ghz processor in a time when processors are made faster hell if i wanted i can overclock my droid to 1.3 ghz.

and don't say jail breaking i've read the horror stories on here and elsewhere of iphone users have issues with it and after they did it. if i were showing to a client and i had to jail break to show something and the system fucked up i'm at a loss. Thats y a device i pay for has to do everything i need it to do out the box without me having to tweak it b/c apple thinks its ok as is.

so save your dumb ass apple arrogance and dumb ass opinions for someone else. this is just me on a messageboard behind a screen name. what i do professionally is not on display so u have no ability to comment on my views of anything.

Are you a photographer ( rhetorical question - because i know by your limited view you are NOT)? How much do you spend a small portfolio (8x10).. including all the prints.. and updating them every couple of weeks/months with new prints? How long does it take... $500 seems like a bargin when I can update my portfolio on-the-fly.. as well have have "multiple" virtual portfolios on the same device for different clients?

So basically it might work but it might not. It won't be supported by apple so it won't run as well. And the main stuff i'd want to use on hulu or oviguide is pretty much far away...

Your right.. I guess I was looking for something more. In Apples defense, they never gave us any expectation on how or what the tablet would look like. Most of us set our expectation a little to high i guess... LOL

i disagree they are marketing it as media tool, the cool new thing its flashy its smooth its apple. but it again restricts end users like me. apple became popular b/c of the art community their applications are 2nd to none but then they applied that artist mindset to everything...fine but not every artist/writer works the same way.

i can sit down and just write without going online other times i am online, or i am loading a dictionary or other reference with this i would have too close one open one close one repeat repeat repeat...its not efficient and it slows productivity. i could care less about the bells and whistles nice to look at but its about as useful as a pretty bitch who can't fuck.

i use apps on my droid but other than occasionally writing something in evernote or writing a word document i don't use my mobile phone to do work.

this device is supposed to bridge the gap but its too much of a mobile phone without the phone ability. it uses a mobile phone os in place a real os but its not a mobile phone. all the hype behind this and all they delivered was a big ipod. thats it. it won't make me give up my netbook or even my future nook hell my droid does more than this. the screen is only 9.7 inches...htc is dropping a 4.3inch mobile phone in the next few months. my netbook has a bigger screen and the new netbooks can run hd and flash quality videos.

this is an apple product to show off apple's arrogance not a device to help productivity. it will sell b/c society is based on fanboyism but this is a fail. Its newton 2 just shined up real good.

creed,

i write professionally as well and i know what you mean. but understand, Apple has yet to market this device as anything. they presented it today, but all the speculation as far as what it can, will do and for who has been pure speculation by people like us and the media.

whether through mobileme or through an app and the usb slot, all of your content/files will be available. there are several apps that allow you to load files onto the flash drive and you bess believe that there will be mobile apps that allow you to edit/work with all of them (ms office).

there will be several 3rd party accessories that will fill usability needs not address by Apple (stands).

iPhone OS 4 is shaping up to be a big one. everyone beefed about the lack of cut/paste when the iphone dropped and apple got to it. and as a blackberry user as well, the iphone cut and paste shits on RIM's. multi-tasking will be address. i bet the biggest issue is battery drain.

apple is clearly focused on multi-touch. it's a relatively new field in the consumer market. they are understandably building off of the iphone. the next step is multitouch on the iMacs.

re:apple and mobile. you have to define mobile. there is mobile communications (iphone), mobile gaming (PSP, ipod touch, DS), and mobile computing (netbooks, laptops). clearly they have product in each category. they seem to be on the right path to me. name another company that has done such a good job on the consumer level using multitouch on several different platforms?

Interesting how not many people are talking about the fact the Apple designed their own processor! This is HUGE! Will this show up in the next iPhone?? Seems FAST!

Looks interesting, but I'll prolly fuck w/ it when it hits 2nd /3rd gen or whenever they add a cam.

Big question mark is the new processor.

Interesting how not many people are talking about the fact the Apple designed their own processor! This is HUGE! Will this show up in the next iPhone?? Seems FAST!

This is what I want to know more about. If it's a new processor then none of the current apps will work that are coded around the current ARM cortex architecture without some kind of translator type software.

I don't remember PA Semiconductor having anything ARM like in their pipeline.

Not to mention that the PA Semiconductor purchase was recent. PA Semiconductor is fabless. It would be highly unlikely to bring a new processor to the market this soon. Not impossible but unlikely.

So..... I'm willing to bet that this processor is leased ARM architecture under an Apple badge. If this is true then the "4" in A4 could be the much rumored ARM 9 quad. At 1mhz a core this would be a beast for this device.

We need more info.

That's because it was actually P.A. Semi designs, that really made the chip. Back in 2007, they made chips that were 300% more efficient than others(AMD & INTEL). At that point they were about to have them as their new chip supplier, but went with Intel instead. Guess the real showdown will be what will the Atom be able to do and if really all the hype, will Apple use it or stay in house?

True..nor was it supposed to be.. Why would Apple need to replace the MacBook?

Sounds like you were snapping your neck saying that shit. The point was, they weren't divine. And this isn't personal attack directed at you so I wish the fuck you would quit talking so damn defensive.
It's a fail because it doesn't replace the MacBook? Your logic is not very logical.

It is a fail because Apple inc, much like you appear to be tone deaf. For years this story has been building and going off in a hundred directions but at no time did Apple Inc do a course correction. Talk about this ipad didn't just begin. it has been around since 2002.

Apple Inc went straight up deceptive and allowed this shit to build up and they had to know if they could not deliver on this idea they allowed to fester in the press, most would be disappointed.

And they are.

Apple inc didn't give a fuck because they know if Apple says it, it's base will back them up, regardless of what. Check the blogs. Check youtube, hell check MacRumors if you want. No USB, no OLED screen, no SD support, no stripped down OSX, all the stuff that was talked about didn't materialize and most are disappointed with what this turned out to be.

This is not to say plastic won't flip to get it but it is a monster let down especially to those who drink Apple koolaid by the quart.

Between it and a Kindle, I'd chose the ipad. I was expecting it to be more. it turned out to be much less.

On April 23, 2008, Apple announced that they had acquired P.A. Semi. While Apple's previous relationship with P.A Semi (see above) would indicate that Apple could use their processors, P.A. Semi manufactures only Power Architecture processors, which Apple does not currently use. At present Apple only uses ARM and x86 processors. On June 11, 2008 – during the annual Worldwide Developer's Conference – it was widely reported that Steve Jobs has said that the acquisition is meant to add the talent of P.A. Semi's engineers to Apple's workforce, and help them build custom chips for the iPod and iPhone.

[8] P.A. Semi has said that they are willing to supply their PWRficient PA6T-1682M chip on an end-of-life basis, if the Power Architecture license that P.A. Semi holds from IBM can be transferred to the acquiring company.[9]

Intellectual property from P.A. Semi was used to create the Apple A4 processor used in the Apple iPad.

I was looking forward to this and held off getting an ebook reader waiting to see what Apple dropped. My impression: this isn't 2007. There is no way I'm buying this joint when I now know Apple is going to drop the "real" iPad in a year or two with all the missing features. People in the presentation room were befuddled....they were all waiting for "one more thing" and some killer feature. Nothing. The presentation didn't even feel complete.

But I guess cats will always fall for the okey-doke. The stuff they left out is so obvious it's an insult to their fans...this planned obsolescence is played, though everyone does it to some extent. This might do the few things it's designed to do well, but I'm waiting for the third generation.

c/s. As a reader, it'll most likely dominate. In that arena it should. its color and has Internet support. Beyond that, no.

My brother just called me and I had to listen to him slurp the Apple Kool-Aid for about 30 minutes. It was easier for me to let him finish his drink than to interupt!

I will be paying some out of work folks to get in line to get Ipads and then flip them on eBay.

Will The iPad Change The Way We Consume Porn?

500x_stoyatablet.jpg
Internet-enabled computers managed to transform the way we consume porn—as did smartphones like the iPhone a few years later. Now, with the iPad, Apple's released a whole new class of device: how will it effect adult entertainment?
Well, if you ask us, it probably won't—or at least, not in the way its predecessors did. While there's no doubt that the iPad is a hugely transformative device that will shape the way we consume a great deal of media, when it comes to porn...well, it just doesn't quite cut it.
As we see it, there are two main problems with the device:
Content: The iPad is set up to download media from three sources: the app store, the iTunes store, and the iBooks store. Awesome, sure—unless you like porn. As Apple has shown, time and time again, they're just not to keen on letting adult entertainment into their universe. And since there's no DVD drive on this baby, you can forget about watching porn that way. If you want to consume anything dirty, you have two options:
1) Go to a porn website using Safari (and forget about sites using Flash-based streaming video).
2) Load a dirty movie into iTunes (that you got from some place other than the iTunes store), and load it on to your iPad that way.
Not the worst options, of course—after all, those are the same ways one gets porn onto the iPhone. But that brings us to the second issue.
It's not discreet: The iPad has—rightly—been described as a very big iPhone...and that's exactly the problem. The main reason why the iPhone has had such a successful career in porn is because it's tiny. As a small, portable device, the iPhone allows you to browse porn discreetly, wherever you may be: at home, at the office, out on the town...and do we really have to explain the benefits of being able to comfortably hold it with one hand?
The iPad, on the other hand, though more manageable than a laptop, is hardly a discreet device. No one's going to believe you're bringing it to the bathroom "to do some reading"—and can you imagine the strain you'll get from holding it in one hand as you lie in bed? And don't even get us started on what would happen if you tried to browse porn on it in public...
Steve Jobs described the iPad as a device that fills the gap between computers and smartphones. And it's true. But in occupying that central position, the iPad's a device that's neither here nor there. Too limited in content to be a portable porn library, and too big and bulky for secret porn watching, it's pretty much the worst of both worlds...at least for the porn connoisseurs of the world.

Without a true OS (not that IPOD bullshit) and the lack of flash make this something I'm not interested in at all.

NO FUCKING FLASH???!!! WTF???:eek::eek::eek:

I'm not too much worried about lack of HDMI out, I've got too many gadgets in my house that already do this, I really don't need one more thing connected to my tv.

I'm going to wait for the HP SLATE...it has windows 7, plays flash (hello Hulu) and I can load CBR reader on it and read free comics......

I just don't think this thing has anything I want right now. Then they want to charge for adapters??? typical Apple...:smh::smh:
