but parents who will want their kids to have a 'portable' device that can play video games AND do something 'productive' may be interested.
Right now, people have a gaming console.
And they have a computer / laptop.
it's still early in the game. the device just dropped today.
I think the issue is that people look at it say...'it doesn't do x,y,z, or it's a tablet PC, or it's just a big phone, or whatever."
but future software / content will help sell units.
in 2 years, when you can play video games, or tele-conference, or do a bunch of different things on it... prolly be the market leader of 'crossover' devices.
apple can't invent everything.
this gives software developers a new platform to create new stuff.
That's where it got twisted. I was talking about the cheaper iPad. You brought up the iPhone, and I was saying that you obviosly have the larger iphone, and that the larger iPad costs 600 bucks.

I agree with you here....
One should take notice at one very big thing here. While the Iphone had overwhelmingly positive response...the response for this iPad has been overwhelmingly negative thus far. The thing is getting slammed on major tech blogs ...blogs that usually gush over any and all thing Apple.....
My take on that is this...while the device may have some cool potential qualities about it...people think Apple came up short overall. Why? because all they did was just enlarge the iPod Touch/Iphone and slapped a new name on it

I just wish it had a webcam, OSX, a couple of USB or firewire/e-sata ports and a slot to add a micro sd card.

Just like I'm waiting for the iPhone to be on another network before i get one, and I'll still have to jail break it for skype.

no need and frankly don;t have the time....just go to techcrunch, gizmodo, engadget..hell engadget facebook topic on it alone and you can see the consensus from everyday people, and twitter (iTampon Is the #2 Trending Topic on Twitter)
the bottom line here is most are NOT impressed
personally I wouldn't mind having one for the e-book factor alone
- not for **small** children, who break stuff easily. Agreed.
My point is that the device can do a number of things, whereas people look at this and say... it's a 'gaming' console, or a Tablet PC, or a Laptop, or a SmartPhone, etc.... but it doesn't have x,y,z.
So it's disappointing if they look at it that way.
But consider 3rd-party developers from each of those industries creating apps for this device, not just web sites. (Plus newspapers, magazines, book publishers, movie studios, record labels, etc.)
There is alot of potential there.
Just my opinion.
bullshit, it comes with wifi but if you want to use 3g yu have to pay $100 more? So if you buy the wifi version and want 3g later you are fucked. ITs basically a big iphone, that you cant install regular osx apps on. They say it plays video but I guess if you want it to play anything besides mov and mp4 you gonna have to jailbreak it

Don’t you worry about the iPad lacking an SD card slot and USB port. Apple has you covered with adapters! How nice of Lord Jobs. Instead of building in two industry standards, users are forced to buy extra items with their new iPad. It’s not like the these standards are large and would take away from the oh-so-important design.
But it really is ridiculous that the iPad doesn’t have an SD card slot built-in. USB port, fine. Apple is sticking with its massive dock connector, but an SD card slot — or microSD card slot — would actually open the iPad to some niche markets.
Just think about photographers. The SD card slot would allow them to quickly and efficiently preview their shots on a large screen. The USB port would even allow them to control some DSLRs directly from the iPad with the right app. But nope, can’t do it without an adapter. Even then, they would only be able to use one at a time because of the single dock connector.
So it seems that the iPad is designed to milk every last penny out of buyers. You see, having a flush-mounted SD card slot would allow consumers to get away with buying the 16GB model and increasing the storage themselves. That’s clearly not in Apple’s financial favor, but it’s not like anyone expected Apple to look out for the buyer anyway. This is a dealbreaker for me.

A lot of people are psyched about the iPad. Not me! My god, am I underwhelmed by it. It has some absolutely backbreaking failures that will make buying one the last thing I would want to do. Updated
Big, Ugly Bezel
Have you seen the bezel on this thing?! It's huge! I know you don't want to accidentally input a command when your thumb is holding it, but come on.
No Multitasking
This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.
No Cameras
No front facing camera is one thing. But no back facing camera either? Why the hell not? I can't imagine what the downside was for including at least one camera. Could this thing not handle video iChat?
Touch Keyboard
So much for Apple revolutionizing tablet inputs; this is the same big, ugly touchscreen keyboard we've seen on other tablets, and unless you're lying on the couch with your knees propping it up, it'll be awkward to use.
No HDMI Out
Want to watch those nice HD videos you downloaded from iTunes on your TV? Too damned bad! If you were truly loyal, you'd just buy an AppleTV already.

No Flash
No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.
Adapters, Adapters, Adapters
So much for those smooth lines. If you want to plug anything into this, such as a digital camera, you need all sorts of ugly adapters. You need an adapter for USB for god's sake.
Update: Why stop at 8? Here are more things we are discovering that suck about the iPad.

Widescreen movies look lousy on this thing thanks to its 4:3 screen, according to Blam, who checked out some of Star Trek on one. It's like owning a 4:3 TV all over again!

Sure, it's "unlocked." But it won't work on T-Mobile, and it uses microSIMs that literally no one else uses.

Apple’s new tablet may be just the ticket for serious photographers. Like all things Apple, it’s cool, well-designed, pretty and yes, expensive if you order the top-of-the-line model, although the entry-level product is very competitively priced and in my opinion, downright affordable.
What the Apple Tablet Will Mean to Photographers
But imagine how hot for you the photo buyers will be when you waltz into their offices with the new tablet and ask, “Care to look at my portfolio?”
The portable portfolio will get an amazing jump-start because of the new tablet, and all the competition that follows it.
And there are more possible practical uses of the tablet. For some, it may be all the laptop they need. Photographers might be able to use the tablet as a portable field monitor for stills or video. Imaging shooting tethered to a tablet!
If all the new Apple tablet did was offer us a cool new way to display our portfolios, I’d be happy. But there’s something much more important to talk about here.
The tablet will save the newspaper, magazine and book publishing businesses. All of these industries have been having tough times. Lots of newspapers and magazines have folded. So have several book publishing houses. One big reason is that printing presses, paper and postage stamps are all more expensive than ever. And the electronic delivery systems are preferred by at least one major segment of the population – young people.
With new outlets for photography that will flow from the movement away from print to things like tablets, photographers will start to see more jobs and it’s possible that at the very least, the blood letting we’ve seen in some news rooms and other places where photo journalists used to be employed will stop.
These are early days yet. We need to wait and see how the device actually works in the real world. There will no doubt be many future iterations of this product. But I am betting that this leads to good news for photographers.

I know, I have it, but you have to jailbreak it to use 3g and not wifi. That way I don't use any cellular minutes.
i have yet to see a plus from this device
I'm a writer. I always have a word processor open on my laptop or netbook. I also surf the net researching. The fact that this doesn't multitask and I don't believe I'll be able to sideload content I already have makes this a fail, i have 100's gigs of media and i don't feel or want to have to jailbreak it just to load my media. the books for this are already more expensive. i could careless about millions of apps. writing is my job.
i had hoped this device could do 3 things.
1. be a ereader with me able to load my own content other ebooks, comics, digital world wide newspapers.
2. provide me a medium where i can write on the go without having to find space on a flat surface so i can write and save my work in any extension i use word or the open word format. unless pages lets that happen its a fail also.
3. a real os that is not dependent on apps to work right. this isn't osx its iphone 4.0...
if i were still in advertising this would be a go b/c it will help with clients but i'm not in advertising anymore and even if i were i'd stick to powerpoint or the program in open office. 16 gigs is not a lot of space for someone like me who is content heavy. i literally have thousands of reference media.
i'm not a mobile gamer beyond chess and emulators. i can do those on my droid and my droid can last the rest of the day. i have a xbox 360 and i'm getting a wii...
its a nice devices for people who want to watch movies on the bed or on the train or something. its great for creative types. i'd be interested if it can hacked to run linux i'd cop one just to do on the go linux learning in a dedicated mobile lab.
ultimately this will sell but it fail b/c its not being marketed as anything but a kiddle replacement, a portable media replacement and b/c its apple.
but it will fail b/c it doesn't address users like me who don't want a bigger mobile phone we want a mobile device that allows us to be productive as we see fit without dependence on apps.
i'm sure other tablet companies are paying attention this...the ipad is very media centric but it cannot mult-task. i'm gonna wait and either cop a win 7 tablet or a ChromeOS tablet. They will do all the things the ipad does and provide a user like me with the tools i need without having to end one project just to open another then go back.

apple is losing their touch and become to tied to the iphone model and now they are trying to apply it to every playform. ppl will get tired of that and move to the next hot thing. apple is becoming stale and resting on their apps and media coverage while not inventing something truly groundbreaking. they could have killed the netbook and the kindle today. all they did was stunt the growth until those companies drop color ereaders and companies drop slates/tablets that do the same thing and make them upgradeable to the user. this comes out in 60 days followed by the iphone 4g a couple months later? why would anyone buy this when they can get an iphone that comes with constant 3g?

if mac's just work or if iphone's just work why should an end user who wants this to just work have to jailbreak? isn't what apple users say? the products just work...yet for iphone and this u have to jail break for it to just work how u want. Isn't that why u jailbroke your iphone?
if i pay 500 for a device i will be damned if i have to tinker with its code to get it to do what i want and i shouldn't have too.

No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.
Adapters, Adapters, Adapters
So much for those smooth lines. If you want to plug anything into this, such as a digital camera, you need all sorts of ugly adapters. You need an adapter for USB for god's sake.
Update: Why stop at 8? Here are more things we are discovering that suck about the iPad.
It's Not Widescreen
Widescreen movies look lousy on this thing thanks to its 4:3 screen, according to Blam, who checked out some of Star Trek on one. It's like owning a 4:3 TV all over again!
Doesn't Support T-Mobile 3G
Sure, it's "unlocked." But it won't work on T-Mobile, and it uses microSIMs that literally no one else uses.

Are you a photographer ( rhetorical question - because i know by your limited view you are NOT)? How much do you spend a small portfolio (8x10).. including all the prints.. and updating them every couple of weeks/months with new prints? How long does it take... $500 seems like a bargin when I can update my portfolio on-the-fly.. as well have have "multiple" virtual portfolios on the same device for different clients?

Steve Jobs intrigued me in his slow, showman-like presentation Wednesday when he said the $499-and-up iPad is "so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone." The comparison to an iPhone makes sense, given the minimalist silver-and-black style of the iPad.
The first thing I wanted to do when I held it was browse the Web and check out the iPad's on-screen keyboard. My favorite Web sites looked great on its crisp screen, which is 9.7 inches on the diagonal — while the iPhone is just 3.5 inches. When you hold the iPad with the wider side down, in landscape mode, it's nearly big enough for touch typing — an improvement over the way that the iPhone's cramped keyboard sometimes causes errors.

i write professionally as well and i know what you mean. but understand, Apple has yet to market this device as anything. they presented it today, but all the speculation as far as what it can, will do and for who has been pure speculation by people like us and the media.
whether through mobileme or through an app and the usb slot, all of your content/files will be available. there are several apps that allow you to load files onto the flash drive and you bess believe that there will be mobile apps that allow you to edit/work with all of them (ms office).
there will be several 3rd party accessories that will fill usability needs not address by Apple (stands).
iPhone OS 4 is shaping up to be a big one. everyone beefed about the lack of cut/paste when the iphone dropped and apple got to it. and as a blackberry user as well, the iphone cut and paste shits on RIM's. multi-tasking will be address. i bet the biggest issue is battery drain.
apple is clearly focused on multi-touch. it's a relatively new field in the consumer market. they are understandably building off of the iphone. the next step is multitouch on the iMacs.
re:apple and mobile. you have to define mobile. there is mobile communications (iphone), mobile gaming (PSP, ipod touch, DS), and mobile computing (netbooks, laptops). clearly they have product in each category. they seem to be on the right path to me. name another company that has done such a good job on the consumer level using multitouch on several different platforms?
