Black Hair Can Grow- Tips and Inspiration

This thread was definitely an inspiration!

I have been natural 3 years but I get so frustrated with the texture and the shrinking in length with certain styles. I mostly get it done by someone who specializes in natural hair, but I hardly ever do it myself. I wear a lot of braids and sometimes twist outs.

I think my first venture will be the bantu knots. I really like those.

Thanks for the info

Hey Chi

I'm glad you are enjoying the thread! I want to try those bantu knots as well, they are really pretty. I am such a plain jane with my natural but in the new year I am going to be more adventurous with it. I haven't found a stylist here yet, do you have one in Chicago? Let me know where, I might check it out when I go back home.

Hope you had/ have a happy holiday!

Hey ID :)

Yes I actually have 2 stylists here in Chicago. They are both really good and patient with my hair.

My one stylist has a mobile service. It's so nice on those days when you don't feel like leaving the house. The other has a shop in her basement that she works from. I'll pm you the info!

I had a great holiday and I hope yours was the same!

Ok I'm back.

There's some good stuff here but I need some help. My hair is a mixture of my parents put together: the fineness of my fathers which looks like a white person's texture, but the fullness of my mothers - though not here texture, but you can't tell cause she got dreads. Anyhoo, according to how my hair is made it's hard for me to find a good natural, loose hairstyle that works...so if any of ya'll got hair like mine I'm open to any suggestions for what to do. I took my braids out today and washed it...this is waht it looks like:

Cool...I hope someone can help you find a style you like...

Mel I have fine hair but it is very densely packed (and I also have a big ass head lol) very curly and shrinks to about 40-50% of my actually length, so I think we might be working with similar types.

Basically I rarely wear my hair in its freshly washed curly state; it tangles to easily and gives me knots. After I wash and deep condition I separate my hair into 4-6 sections, put in a leave-in conditioner, twist and let them air dry.

After completely dry i take each section, use a styling cream and make neat twists (usually 4 per side and 8 in the back).. I sleep, wake up and untwist.. I retwist every night or every other night w/o combing.. Sometimes I switch up and braid, and other times ill loosely twist my hair roll them on flexi rods and take out for big loose curls. You can make your curls looser or tighter depending on the size/number of twists/braids.

Hope this helps, and your hair is gorgeous!

Thanks you two!

That sounds like something I can do. I'm not very high maintenance and with the kids I don't get the chance too...I'm thinking about buying some Gregg Juice and see if that will work as a good leave in. I know I do need some good shampoo though...

I don't have much time either, it usually takes me about 20-30 minutes to twist so you should be fine. I use Gregg juice to refresh my twists/braids in the mornings but on freshly washed hair I use SheaMoisture Shea Butter leave in conditioner-I swear by it!

Shampoos can be tricky..since I use only natural products in my hair-I use a sulfate-free shampoo.

It is called black soap shampoo from www.essentialbalms.com

I also use cleansers from www.myhoneychild.com -she has great all natural hair and scalp cleansers that are not drying.

Shampoo tip: apply to scalp only-rub and massage but do not lather, it will get down to your strands as you rinse. This prevents drying out hair and tangles.

I dont know if any of you have been to this forum...if you can past the drama and the cliqueishness you got some pretty good info on there.

Oh, Lord...I must resist the urge
The mister was just laughing at me for having UPS knocking on our door 3 times/week during the holidays because of Curlmart.

Hairstyle How To: Bun

 Thanks for this. I have hair over hair and doing braids and twists is starting to wear me out. Hopefully these buns will work and won't be too heavy on my head.

LOL my boyfriend just said I get something delivered to me every day... I think that was my hint.

I still might get that curl junkie hibiscus and banana deep fix conditioner- i love that stuff. I just bought some things from AfroVeda, going to try this weekend. Just FYI curl junkie (www.curljunkie.com) is having a sale too and launching some new products over the weekend so check it out if you dare lol.

I plan to do the bun through the winter months and when I see my clients. I think it's a sleek, professional look that is still sexy and will protect my ends from this brutal midwestern air.
