Apple expects to sell 10 million tablet computers in 2010

I agree price will make all the difference...with apple laptops being what it is there is opportunity...but I don't see the draw here

Isn't this just a touch screen laptop that is wired into cell towers?

Doesn't matter as long as El Jobso lives it will sell.

not necessarily true. look at the Apple TV. so far it's been a flop.

good luck with that man.... yeah..this has a chance to open up opportunities for small publishers and writers..

thanks fam. actually my agent pitches the big publishers. Penguin, Random House, etc. the time for the coffee table book isn't right now, so i'm working on the 2nd book.

not necessarily true. look at Apple TV. big flop so far.

yep... every company has there share of flops.. interesting that the Apple Tablet is going to be a reincarnation of a previous Apple product.. The Newton..

Apple really has given very little attention to the Apple TV

I hope they make it easy for current iphone customers. Maybe pop out the sim card and use the other one.

yeah i heard about this. a product is only as good as the content.

the interesting thing about the TV subscription is that it's CBS and Disney interested, the 2 major networks that aren't on HULU, the king TV online portal right now. but with Comcast talking about charging for HULU, it will have an interesting effect on the whole TV Online On-Demand viewing.

big questions are what is HULU's pay plan and what networks will join Apple TV and how much will it cost since you are asking for people to pay for hardware and then a subscription?

Its a big iphone with a 3g chip in it that will allow skype like calling. 3g will be gone within 3 yrs. Apple is pimping its base again. This product will be outdated within 3 yrs. The base wont care it has an apple logo n they'll b online at 2am waiting 4 a 10am opening.

It will be out dated but it's not going any where anytime soon.

My question is whose network will the device use?

Divine is cool with me btw... but Ive never seen someone on here love a company as much as he loves Apple

I love Canon too. All my camera gear is Canon (see my sig). Oh, and Bose. I buy only bose speakers. My large screen TV's, I usually try to stick with Sony. Printers.. only buy Epson! I guess I like what I like :D

yeah man..i wasnt saying anything negative ...especially considering that you always give good reasons for it... but yeah...you love your products man

Good thread by the way.. I'll keep checking back for all the Apple haters  I love it...

The next few weeks are going to be extremely busy for gadget fans. Reports indicate that the Nexus One — also known as the Google Phone — may be officially unveiled on January 5, 2010 at a Google press event.

Android not striking your fancy? Well Apple will be holding their own media event on January 26, 2010 and some reports suggest that the illusive Apple tablet — perhaps named the iSlate — will be unveiled. Already we’re hearing predictions of 10 million units sold the first year for a product that doesn’t even officially exist yet!

With two potentially huge announcements from two high profile companies, we want to know, what product are Mashable readers most excited to see, the Google Nexus One or the Apple iSlate?

Take our poll and let us know! Also feel free to explain your choice in the comments!

Looking forward to seeing what they have in store.
I read somewhere maybe/wishful thinking a integrated
isight cam that could read hand gestures. like 4 finger swipe
page turns etc. I just see some ergonomic disadvantageous to
the device seems like it would be awkward holding a 10 inch
device and still be able to type. but i only got speculation
Im sure apple would have run many end user test.

It would be good to showcase prototypes of graphics, animation,
etc. LED screen on a device like this would look tight...
maybe adding the micro projector hardware inside this joint would be
nice to.

Ya know!!! I saw this and was amazed at first. I'm usually called an Apple hater to most on here because I think the Palm Pre is a better product than the IPhone. I'm not an Apple hater because I plan on buying a Mac eventually. Back to this tablet. I was a lil impressed, but I really don't see what the big fuss is about this product. It's too big for me. I still don't see this product superior to the Kindle, which I plan on getting. Plus I still like this product below and plan on getting one.

People aren't thinking outside the "box" so to speak enough when considering this tablet.

The implications for this device are endless. I think it will mostly be marketed toward people as an in between device (laptop and iPhone) that will take care of your entertainment needs (e-magazines, game apps, movies, apple-TV) but it will also take care of educational needs as well (reading, writing, recording, interface with powerpoint lectures from professors for students, etc.) while still being extra portable.

Imagine being in a presentation or lecture and having the speaker or lecturer's powerpoint uploaded as you enter the room. You can record the lecturer, have it translated into notes or integrated with the lecture presentation itself into a nice little document. It would act like a digital notebook for students...

This could also replace newspapers and magazines as well or just be another outlet for them to display their content.

This product has so many possibilities it's ridiculous. I also think it will be around $899. I can't see it going lower, but if they do then it will even get more of the e-reader market...

But couldnt you do this with a cheap $200 netbook from Asur

There are tablets out on the market now...and I actually dont own a netbook....so that is a serious question.

netbooks are tiny cramped keyboard paperweights, if you love having your thumbs finger fuck each other when you type, then netbooks are awesome

just kiddinig but they are uncomfortable to type with..

with a table think more easy access touch and go, similar to the iphone.. no one gets on an iphone and types a their novel but quick touch and go, read/watch etc and you good to go

Ive seen demos of tablets in action... but I have never used a netbook... but I was specifically talking about the functionality onslaught mentioned in terms of downloading lectures note on the fly..

in terms of the other multimedia uses... Im sure Apple is going to go above and beyond the other devices on the market especially in terms of great hardware and ease of use on the software..

Yeah, I'd like to cop this too, but i feel it's about 200-300 dollars more than it should be.

i got a Mac Mini connected to my HDTV used a media center.
i got a MBP 17" that is my workhorse machine.
i got MacBook Air that i do my basic work off of.
i got the original iPhone that i'm gonna jailbreak one of these days.
i got the 3GS iPhone that is my main phone.

i've actually asked myself what would i use a tablet for. IF the tablet matched the capabilities of the iPhone in regards to the wide array of apps available for it on that 10" screen? hell yeah!

if the iTunes Store expanded their content to books and magazines and newspapers that was custom created for the tablet? and i could still import and use literary content from other sites, sources and file formats? hell yeah!

if it still had the same OS as Snow Leopard and utilized some of the better iPhone OS features and it had the right input and output ports on it that allows me to connect to my TV and projector to another computer? hell yeah!

if i could use it as a touchpad and there was a stylus option with some real good handwriting recognition and text to speech and a video camera and a good wireless situation and a battery that lasts longer than 3 hours? hell yeah!

if that shit could do most of the shit i listed, i will order one day 1 and stop having to lug that 17" around all the time.

On a side note I hope Apple gets down to the bottom of the problems its been having with the iMacs because I will definitely buy one when I get the cash.

I actually still havent figured out the actual point of a tablet computer....not because I dont understand them. I have been following them for years.... I mean the purpose... why would the mass market consumer need a tablet. I can see the need for an mp3 player like an Ipod..or even a smartphone like an Iphone... but if you have a smart phone and laptop...why do you need a tablet.. i know they will have the touchscreen, ebook reader, etc.. but still

The mass market NEEDS whatever is doesn't already have. People needed the wheel, then they needed a chrome wheel, they they needed a Chrome wheel with low profile tires, then they needed a chrome wheel with low profile tires and rims that kept spinning when you stoped. You get the point.

I kinda feel you on this.. but I think Apple is pretty good at manufacturing need.

Thanks for the sports illustrated demo...still feels a bit too specialized imo...may still do 10Mill world wide....

What would put this over the top is seamless voice command imo, instead of clicking 'baseball' say "menu, baseball" "play swimsuit video" "turn page"
(and if you have an iPhone you know they have the capability to do it)

A bunch of "wow" but as far as being practical, it doesn't improve much except the way you interact with the internet (browser/gui)

Apple is going to need to get the programmers to translate the content and maximize it's usefulness (as usual)

If your like me and already have a mobile all-in one device and don't have an extra $800 laying around I say wait till the second generation, after that then they (programmers) will figure out how to make the product a god-send and apple will have reconfigured it to tailor to those programmers plus the bugs and issues will be smoothed out

But you never know :dunno:

Hmm, I wonder if it would make a nice electronic photo portfolio. That would be hot! A laptop is overkill, the iPhone is too small for that.. but a tablet would be perfect for a portable portfolio.

could be. if they actually got an OLED screen, absolutely.
great speakers would help.
curious what the input/output are going to be. probably headphones in and micro-DVI out.
and battery life. if they can get anywhere near what the MBP gets on one battery charge, it'll be a winner.
