~ Comics New releases ~

Didn't know it was thus limited. You do raise a good point. Marvel never did give a fuck about black readers. Guess no reason to think that might change now....:smh:

ty

He was kind of popular in the 70's. His Problem was that he is just a black version of Hank Pym. And what happened to his nephew that was going to avenge his death?

Blue Marvel showed up in a comic last week I can't remember which on it was. I think it was What If WWH or Secret Invasion.

Blue Marvel Sucked because he was too much of a goody two shoes. If I were him, I would have kicked more White peoples asses than Magneto.

And that's why Marvel keeps black folks out they staff, with the exception of a few passers by that seem to toe the line. Black Panther ain't never had a problem with politics at home until it became plausible by actions shown on the news (Rawanda type stories, African unrest). Now, they forcing art to imitate life. That being the case, these latest stories could have come out years ago, but it wasn't widely reported or cared about in white media.

Because that has been the Gladiator's job for the last few decades.

Kallark, last of his kind, eye beams, flight, invulnerable, nigh unstoppable strength, Mohawk, his bitch Lilandra, turns into a wuss when he doubts himself.

Clark, last of his kind (until retconned numerous times), heat & xray vision, flight, invulnerable, nigh unstoppable strength, S-curl, his bitch Lois, turns into a bitch near puke colored rocks.

Now this is Sentry's job

"Where is the WOMAN??"

You can never expect Marvel or DC to ever do 'minority' stories well. Not saying they never have. They have 'tried.' The thing is that when stories do come out that cater to that audience...the support for it is low.

Support is low because of the retailers. Minorities reading/watching/enjoying fiction based on white people is an everyday thing. The problem is that white people aren't trying to check for stories based on non-white characters since they "can't relate". Now they can relate to asgardian gods and aliens from krypton, but a dark skinned human is asking wayyyyy too much.

So these comic companies may start a book about a black hero. The actual comic stores order extremely low since they figure "why the fuck would my white customers want to read about some ****** in a spandex". This was Milestone's problem. That shit was critically acclaimed, won comic awards out the ass, had the GOAT Alan Moore big it up, but the retailers refused to stock the shit. The issues that they did buy almost ALWAYS sold out, but they wouldn't increase their orders.

Shit, look at The Crew. The book was canceled by issue four. Retailers order the first 3-4 months of a comic before the issue even hits the stands. If they're in cancelation territory by the 4th issue than that means it was basically canceled before the first reader got his hands on it.

But let's say the book actually makes it to the market base, now you have to deal with white fans who will go out of their way to make excuses to not buy minority books. Black Panther being a genius, rich, and a great fighter is unrealistic to the same people who read Batman. How the fuck does that make sense?

On the comicbook resources message board, someone asked if people would buy an all black fantastic four type of book. One of the first replies said, "Well, they would need to create a reason as to why only these black superheroes teamed up together". But when the FF, Avengers, JLA, Teen Titans, Thunderbolts , etc keep shit lily white no one says shit.

"They don't really care about us"

"They don't really care about us"

I hear you but at the same time I use to own a comic store in the traditional format. Meaning I had a comic stand in the streets and a main brick and mortar store. I ordered by 2 methods. I had my regulars whom I store books for why they collected. These are the cats that use to pre-pay for their orders but these vet collectors. In other words, they would take a issue of previews (purchase or look at the book in the store) then order by what came out.

Now, retailers don't want to get stiffed so the other method for the walkers (people walking in regularly or not). I would bulk up on top sellers Batman, Superman, X-Men, Spider-Man, Wolverine...everything would be considered a sitter (books that sold over time).

I think some of real problem is that most ppl don't know about Previews but know about Wizard.

But if you want to supports stories you want you got to get with previews and tell the retailer to pick it up.

So yeah part of it is writer/publishers getting freaked out on the race issue, the other is money and lack of knowledge of how the business works.

Man, I remember telling cats when Milestones came out that were into it..."Check Previews - Let me know which books you want I will stock them for you."

"Nah, I don't got time to do all of that." They would stay and chat about a storyline with other patrons...then next month

"Yo, you did get that latest issues of Icon?"....:hmm:

To an extent those statement are true. I went to an all white high school and our teacher made us do an experiment to and we figured out Whites are more accepting of immigrants than they are of Black Americans. And it basically came down to skin color not nessessarly racism.

Basically you never see a white family of 4 eat out at a soul food resturant. But you see them go to every other ethnic eatery.

That's why every black sit-com has the white best friend or neighbor, Same reason they made Spawn's best friend white for the feature film. If you have an all black cast then you have a "black" movie. Whites will not go see it.

Another thing is that most writers that write "black" comics (one shots or series) feel that they have to be political or fight the power in some way.

Sometimes you just feel like reading a kick, bam, pow old school style entertaining comic.

Yeah, I know that element of the business regarding why most retailers order the way they do, but it's still indicative of the problem. Like you said, you don't want to get stuck holding non-returnable issues, but the assumption in the minds of most retailers is that I won't be able to push a minority lead product.

If I want to read about a black character I have to go pre-order it, but if the character's white I can relax and know that it'll be on the shelf. Something's definitely wrong with that. It is what it is, and I don't see it changing anytime soon, but it'll always irk me.

The funny thing about that is that 9 times out of 10 it's the white writers who try to make the black character all militant and whatnot. I'll read that shit and think "I just want to see Mr. Terrific son the shit outta Darkseid, save that white guilt for the next election".

I give the independent titles a pass for this simply because none of them get any burn. I'm primarily talking about the Big 4 (Marvel, DC, Dark Horse & Image). Walking Dead is actually one of the very few comics that actually increases in readership every month.

I always thought Mr. Terrific would be an ideal Marvel character.

Storywise I think he could work in Marvel, but fan reaction to him would probably be worst than the Amadeus Cho backlash. Mr. Terrific was supposed to be the smartest man in DC but got bumped to #3 under Batman and Lex Luthor. Marvel's more known for super smart characters and the fans aren't going to have him put over Reed, Banner, Iron Man, Pym, etc. Most people don't even acknowledge that Black Panther is on par with them.
