Here's the catch:
Say you could be the General Manager of 1 Professional Sports team - what would you do different this season/off-season to help your team improve.
Obviously, this thread is targeted towards teams who are losing or lost in their regular season but I expect other teams doing ok (i.e. Dallas Cowboys fans to voice their GM choices as well).
Personally, I'd love to be the GM for the Mets this offseason.
All I've been hearing about in NYC are the Yankees making moves since the last few years. Going back to them getting CC, Burnett, and Tex, to now getting Granderson and pitcher Vasquez... while my Mets are sitting with their dick in their hands.
They haven't even aggressively gone after Jason Bay or Matt Holliday while the Phillies just got Doc Holliday so you know our division is going to be near impossible to win next year.
The Mets need pitching more than anything. After J Santana and K Rod and a few young pitchers - the pitching staff is just basura - at least they were this year.
The Red Sox signed pLackey and the Cards got B Penny - 2 pitchers I thought were good to go after in free agency. shit, the Yankees traded for Vasquez and resigned Pettit... making them have IMO one of the best pitching rosters.
Here is what I'd do if I was GM instead of Omar:
1) Sign 2 pitchers: Get Jarrod Washburn and Erik Bedard. If not Bedard, then Ben Sheets. Pitching helps get teams into the playoffs. Spend some money on them. We are a NYC team and we have money.
2) Sign Jason Bay! Don't let him get away to the Sox or Cards. Give him 70 million for 4 years with 3 guaranteed. He's young and will be an All Star for at least 3 more years. I like him more than Holliday because him having faced a tougher AL East divison of pitchers will be ready to face Doc Holliday of the Phillies.
3) Don't sign Johnny Damon. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES sign this dude. He had a good year but he is OLD and not worth spending money. Also DO NOT sign Vlad Guerrero.
4) Get a status update on all the current roster players.
Find out how healthy Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, and David Wright as well as Jeff Francouer.
We have good players. We just need them healty.
5) Finds ways to eliminate useless payroll costs by the end of this 2010 year so that we can go after Joe Mauer/Cliff Lee/V-Mart in Winter 2010.
