where does ice cube rank in the best MC's list

I don't really like putting numbers on or ranking MC's. Was Cube the best rapper? Probably not but his impact was great and that's what matters. Pac wasn't the best rapper but he's usually ranked int he top 5 because of his impact.

No Particular Order....

I go by what I hear as a person who focuses foremost on lyricism...

That's fair and i respect your opinion. But the problem is that your definition of "lyricism", doesn't include story telling ability, gravity of truth, reflection of the world, etc.

I say this cause you said you don't have Biggie in your top five and place Black Thought in the same discussion (which tells me a lot about your listening tastes).

I just say this, listen to Death Certificate(my fav) again but especially listen to how the album is arranged (life and death side) and especially listen to My Summer Vacation.

My 2 cents.

Yes Sir.... Cube has killed all of his callobos up until 2007...

The song with Kool G Rap & Scarface called 2 to the Head.
Cube had the best and last verse...

icecube.jpg

and many others we will add as the argument progresses.
Wrote for NWA.. The first intelligent gangster. Killed all his callabos with
whoever was on there. Wrote some of the coldest stories of alltime.

More substance than many of the nyggaz yall like, diverse and hes been
in the game forever and still can kick ass.
Top 5 easy.

don't really matter Cube is the second richest rapper second only to Will Smith. Fuck what you heard.

Top 5:yes:...he never had a wack album imo.

plus-how many rappers right now could star in a movie, bang out a hit record at any moment and no one would be surprised, and rip shows damn-near nightly throughout the year(big and small)? Snoop is the only other one that I can even think of off-hand, and his acting sux...

Cube's last album was straight FIRE...he is waaay more lyrical and politically charged than 90% of other rappers...not to mention, HE'S BEEN DOING IT CONSISTENTLY FOR 25 YEARS!

NWA dropped in 86....Kane in 88, Kool G rap dropped in 1990...Slick Rick dropped the show in 85...but other than that...I can keep naming Mc's

Cube influenced a WHOLE COAST...but definitely not the east...
Before heads come in with that West Coast Gangsta shit influencing the East Coast....Kool G...was the main cat who came on that killer shit on the East....

So In essence....Wtf are YOU talking about....?

WTF are you talking about. You new York Ninjas was wearing polka dots, rapping about blue cheese and Hawaiian Sofie when the west was gangster.:lol:

NWA/ICE CUBE > all of New York Rap cause we fathered the new breed.:lol::lol:

BTW Bird in the Hand is one of the greatest Rap records of all time. Fuck the haters

Of all time i would say top 10. But he is down the list during this era of rap music, even tho that last album was banging.

The fuck? Lets not talk some frestyle bs saying "kill him on the mic" I dare you to find a better relevant line than "rather be judge by twelve than carried by six". People still use that saying today.

I can honestly say I cannot name 9 emcees that is singlehandedly better than cube. the facts are he is in the Top 10 discussion, period.

This and . . .

Only rapper I know of that's supported by the same people he used to diss on records: Whites and Jews.

And as for as lyrics: you cats need to stop follow that 20+ year old Rakim format. Ice Cube lyrics are so graphic, he's basically a rapping screenwriter. For example, if you've seen his video (can't the name but Mack 10 made his debut on it) "That's What I gotta Do", every bar reflects a scene in the story as it develops. Stella story writing skills. Serious character development in his lyrics. All that polysyllabic rhyming and varied rhyme schemes and other rapping parlor tricks looks amazing UNTIL the rapper writes with substance. The last time I heard fancy rhyming with a smooth short story was "A story to tell" by none other...

This.

Two groups (WSC and NWA) = Hall of Fame.
Solo career = Hall of Fame.

Latest LPs are both solid releases. Especially LNCL.

Do you mean "Bird in the Hand" is one of the greatest rap recording, or Death Certificate (the album from which the song "Bird in the Hand" stems) is one of the greatest Rap records of all time?

You're correct with either. Death Certificate is #1 on my Greatest Rap Albums of all time list. This is the album that predicted and in some cases fueled the riots.

Top 20 because of his little Don Mega stint. Without that about 5 year run there he'd be top 15.

Can you blame him?

Even he can see through that Frankenstein Monster labeled NWA.
Remember Him and Dre tried to change up their style but no one was buying it. Their brand ingrained in them unlike Snoop, they can't play just any role. Damn, Snoop can record with the Care Bears and not risk his fan base.

Ok, so it seems that an MC getting smashed by another somehow diminishes his overall body of work or his accomplishments? Yes, Common may have scored one of the best diss tracks in history on Cube, I agree.
I find this an interesting post because I thought the same question myself about a year ago. Maybe the question should be "Is Cube one of the greatest Hip-Hop writers of all time?". I say this because you have to consider that he single handedly put the West on the map by writing ALL of NWA's lyrics, then his own, THEN movie scripts and reality TV show(s). That's pretty hefty considering that all the great MC's back in the day did some ghost writing here or there but none did it to that magnitude and completely changed the culture to shift from one focus to another ie East to West.

everyone in ny was not rocking polka dots back then just like not everyone in cali was rocking a jheri curl with some stiff ass khakis and some chucks.

kool g rap was on the gangster tip way before ice cube went solo, even when nwa out. nwa was just one of the first to cross over with gangster rap.

Okay, I can see that most definitely. Folks should only press Rakim for his delivery and his sonic "mechanics" of rhyming. Although he's not the first to do it, but definitely the most innovative with it.

somewhere in the 4 - 10 range...He's one of the greatest...

And i'm from Brooklyn

I am from nyc

/end thread

C/S....The only reason I read through these replies is cause Cube is one of my top 3 favs. He got classics, &

some classic verse's!!!

If certain rappers can be top off two albums Cube should be there also from 1988/89 -1992 Cube was your favorite rapper's rapper. I'm from the East Coast I remember how Cube getting love from east coast rappers because of his lyrics. People are trying to focus on his music from 94 -06 when he more focused on his movie career but his last two CDs shows he can still get it in.

Common is going down that same lane of where you're going to have to forget their last part of their career and just try to remember what they used to be.

88-92 he was top five for me. Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Chuck D, KRS One, Ice Cube

Now I'd say 15-20, because you still have to consider the last 15 years of mediocrity, gimmicks and bullshit. Just like I can't consider Common one of my favorite rappers anymore.

yeah Top Ten easy...alot of hits and career never went down
cube never sold out imo.
I still got that raw footage in heavy rotation.

Jack in the box. In my Ipod before I shoot ball. shit goes hard:dance:

I said CUBE.. not NWA you lil snotty nose bastard. Cude didn't gain his due respect til he went solo. Cube dropped in mid 1990

NWA dropped in 86....Kane in 88, Kool G rap dropped in 1990...Slick Rick dropped the show in 85...but other than that...I can keep naming Mc's

Top 5........... for Steady Mobbin', Once Upon A Time In The Projects, Nigga You Love To Hate, Gangsta Gangsta, My Summer Vacation, Fuck The Police, etc.....

#1. Ice Cube released 4 consecutive rock solid albums between 1990 and 1993. Most old school rappers can't claim that.

Oh, and Common is a faggot. That hypocrite became the very thing he dissed Ice Cube of being back in the day.

Of course Common is a hypocrite... But he still made Ice Cube look like a fool.

Westside Slaughterhouse:I Used to Love HER::U Didn't Care:Stan

An ignorant reply taking offense at a classic rap storytelling effort and then the instigator getting ripped apart by the rapper he attacked.
