webOS 1.2.0

Version information

* Version: webOS 1.2.0
* Release date: 28 September 2009

New applications

NONE

Feature changes to existing applications

Amazon MP3

*

Songs can now be purchased from Amazon MP3 over a phone network connection. A Wi-Fi connection is no longer required.

App Catalog

* In preparation for e-commerce in the App Catalog, to purchase apps, you can enter credit card information by selecting Preferences & Accounts from the application menu in App Catalog. Credit card information is stored with the Palm profile, not on the phone. You can choose whether you need to enter their Palm profile password each time you make a purchase, or for the first purchase in any four-hour window.
* If you want to reinstall a purchased application you previously deleted, you can open App Catalog, search for the application, tap the app name, and tap Download again for free. You do not need to pay for the application again.
* A new Share button enables you to send a link to the app page in an email or text message. You can select whether to enter comments anonymously, using your first and last name, or using your first initial and last name.
* You must accept an end-user license agreement to purchase apps.

Backup

*

Web browser bookmarks are now backed up to your Palm profile. After a restart or partial/full erase, the bookmark is restored in Web when you go to the web page.

Bluetooth

* If you are on the phone, get in a car with a previously paired car kit, and turn on the car, a notification appears asking whether you want to continue talking directly into the phone, or transfer the call to the car kit. Previously, the call was automatically transferred to the car kit.
* The types of car kits to which contacts can be transferred has been increased. You can transfer contacts to Toyota and Lexus car kits.
* You can make a Bluetooth connection to a computer even if the computer’s Bluetooth device name field is blank.

Calendar

* On the event details screen, the Map Location application menu item is now called Event Location and has two submenu options: Show On Map, which displays the location in Google Maps, and Get Directions, which provides directions from the current location in Google Maps.
* The options for changing a calendar’s display color and choosing whether to show or hide a calendar in All Calendars view are now accessed by opening the application menu > Preferences & Accounts > Calendar View Options, or by tapping the Calendar View Options list item in the list where you switch between All Calendars and an individual calendar.
* If you tap Snooze on a calendar event notification, the notification no longer reappears after the event end time.
* If a calendar note contains a phone number, you can tap the number to dial it.
* In Day view, you can press and hold the orange key/Option and tap an event to delete the event. Options displayed include deleting just this event or deleting the whole series for recurring events.
* Calendar now recognizes the 7th day of a given month as the first Monday/Tuesday/etc. of that month, not the second. If you choose a repeat option for an event on the 7th, the list correctly shows the option Monthly on 1st [day]. Previously, the repeat list for an event on the 7th of the month showed the option Monthly on 2nd [day].
* Untimed events included in calendar data migration from your desktop now appear on the correct date in Calendar.
* If you create an all-day event and then switch the phone’s time zone, the event continues to display correctly.
* When you select a month for a birthday, the month displays correctly.
* Responses to meeting invitations are correctly sent back to the organizer. If the organizer of an event requests not to receive responses, responses are not sent to the organizer.

Clock

*

The volume of alarms set in clock matches the ringtone volume, not the system sounds volume.

Contacts

* On a contact details screen, a Send Contact option is available on the application menu, with options to send the contact to a car kit or send it as a vCard attachment to an email or multimedia message.
* On a contact details screen, a Copy All option is now available on the Edit submenu in the application menu. Selecting this option copies the entire contents of the contact entry as plain text.
* LinkedIn is now available as an online account in Contacts. As with Facebook, a LinkedIn account set up on the phone enables you to download contacts from that account. LinkedIn contacts cannot be created or edited in Contacts.
* If a contact contains an instant messaging (IM) address, the contact is linked to the IM account buddy entry.

Email

* You can search for messages in any email folder simply by opening the folder and typing. Search returns any matches found in the subject, From, To, or CC field.
* If a message contains an inline image, you can act on the image by pressing and holding the orange key/Option and tapping the image. For all images, an option appears to share the image as an attachment to an email message. If the image is in JPG, BMP, or PNG format, a second option appears to copy the image to the Photos app.
* Support for paragraph text selection, copy, and paste is now available in Email. A yellow highlight appears to indicate paragraph selection.
* If you have multiple Exchange accounts, you can now use Exchange policies on all these accounts; previously this was restricted to one account. Additionally, IT administrators no longer have to deselect “allow non-provisionable devices” on the Exchange server in order for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync policies to work on the phone.
* If you change synchronization of email in a POP account to Manual, the account no longer continues to sync email automatically.
* When addressing a message, searching for a linked contact whose contact entry does not contain a complete last name (such as John S.) now returns the contact match correctly.
* When you accept a meeting invitation, the response is now correctly sent.
* Forwarded messages now correctly display the original message text with the formatting maintained.
* When you save an attached file—for example, a Word file attachment saved to Doc View—the file appears with the correct name in the application.
* An error message appears if you cannot send a message from an Exchange account because the account mailbox is full.
* The Email application always enforces EAS security policies—such as entering a password—when you try to access your Exchange account in Email.

Media Sync

*

Media sync now allows for synchronizing photos without requiring the full-resolution originals. This provides faster display of high-quality full screen images and enables you to store more photos on the phone.

Memos

* Tapping text in a memo moves the cursor to the point that was tapped.
* When you send a memo using the Email Memo menu option, the memo formatting is maintained in the copied memo.

Messaging

* When you are in a conversation with an IM buddy, the buddy’s online status and custom message are displayed on the conversation screen.
* In Conversations view, a Copy All option is now available on the Edit submenu in the application menu. Selecting this option copies the entire contents of the conversation as plain text.
* When addressing a message, searching for a linked contact whose contact entry does not contain a complete last name (such as John S.) now returns the contact match correctly.
* If a contact contains an instant messaging (IM) address, the contact is linked to the IM account buddy entry.
* You can receive vCard contact entries as part of a multimedia message.

Music

* If playback of an audio file is paused or interrupted, when you resume playback, playback resumes at the point where it was paused. This applies to audio files for which the Genre field is defined as podcast, speech, spoken word, netcast, or audiobook only.
* You can use music playback controls on the dashboard even if the screen is locked.
* If the ringer switch is turned off, music playback is not interrupted by an incoming call.

Phone

* You can now turn carrier data services on or off in the Phone application by opening the application menu > Preferences > Data Usage > tap on/off.
* Default ringtone volume has been increased.
* Adjusting the volume of a call now works even if the screen is off. Reducing the volume level to zero sets the call volume to zero.
* Contact entries in the call log now show both the phone number and type.

Photos

*

The Photos app can now display photos in JPG, BMP, and PNG format.

Sprint Navigation

*

Sprint Navigation now pulls Google contacts from the phone, as well as Exchange and Palm profile contacts.

System

* You can open either the application or connection menu by dragging down from the upper corner of the phone onto the screen, as well as tapping the upper corner of the screen.
* When you press and hold the orange key/Option and drag onscreen, the cursor now moves one word at a time instead of one character at time in Email, Memos, and other apps. The cursor still moves one character at a time in the Web address bar and Messaging body text entry field.
* Notifications, including incoming phone calls, now show above the onscreen lock icon, so they can be seen when the keyboard is locked.
* Notification sounds play softly when you are on a call, regardless of the system sounds setting.
* If you copy text from an application and open the Launcher, you can paste the text to start a universal search.
* Universal search contact matches include an Add Reminder option that allows you to add a reminder to the contact.
* In universal search, pressing the orange key/Option + a letter key now searches on the letter key’s alternate character (for example, 5 for F), not on the letter key.
* In universal search, you can enter keywords to search for applications. For example, entering “addresses” returns Contacts, “SMS” returns Messaging, and “pictures” returns Photos.

Tasks

* Tasks that are assigned a category now retain the category when they synchronize between the phone and your desktop. Other information including start date, status, reminder setting, and privacy setting is also retained.
* A new Hide Completed menu option is available. If you select this option and mark a task as completed, the task disappears from the current view.
* A menu in the upper-right corner of the screen showing all tasks enables you to sort tasks by due date or priority. You can also manually reorder the tasks.

Web

* The browser now supports downloading files from a web page. To download a file, tap the file name.
* The browser now supports paragraph selection, cut, copy, and paste on web page text. A yellow highlight appears to indicate paragraph selection.
* You can press and hold the orange key/Option and tap a link or image. Options displayed include opening the item in a new card, sharing the link or image via email, or copying the URL. For images in JPG, BMP, or PNG format, an additional option to copy the image to the Photo app is displayed.
* If you tap on a text field, the page zooms to a level at which it is easy to read the text being entered.
* If you copy text in the address bar or in the body text of a web page, a notification appears stating that the text was copied.
* You can accept self-signed certificates through the browser.

Security

This release addresses several security issues with Palm webOS software.

^^^ Good info. All we need now is SMS & MMS forwarding, video recording ability & actual IM apps to be where it needs to be. These are very nice updates though.

there's a tweak for SMS and MMS forwarding... we just have to wait until WebOS Quick Install gets updated for 1.2. I was using it for awhile before the 1.2 OS update.

Also someone is working on making the built-in instant messenger having the ability to hold all the instant messengers like windows live, facebook, etc...

thumb_350_Plugins.png

I finally decided to use the built-in messenger for AIM and Googlechat... and I just linked all the screen names to a contact to solve that problem of it putting all the SNs in your contact book.

sooo on the front of the cracked screen....

Seems like a decent number of Pres are getting the crached screen. It seems to be a defect in the structual integrity of the screen.....

So I called Sprint at a sprint store....was on hold for a very long time. Talked to one chick who couldnt help me, got her employee info, asked for her manager's name and to speak with her....

Evidenty when Sprint gave ma a discount for the warranty taking it from 7 to 4 dollars....They didnt keep both policies (stolen/lost covereage and damage coverage.)

As a result the store told me I could pay 100 dollar deductible or drive to St. Louis to the corporate office and get it for free (St. Louis is an hour away) I say hell naw to that and tell her to just credit my account and give me the other insurance for the additional four dollars per month. She agrees.

They are next daying me a new pre....should arrive today.:dance:

Palm Pre's New Strategy: Forget iTunes, Hello Wireless Amazon Downloads

When the Palm Pre debuted, one of its most useful features was its ability to sync with Apple's iTunes software. Unfortunately, how it went about doing this was a little bit underhanded: it pretended to be an iPhone. The most recent version of the hack - yes, there were several - was made possible by Palm's use of Apple's USB hardware vendor code provided by the USB Implementers Forum, an industry standards group. The Pre simply used Apple's code so that iTunes would see the Pre as an Apple device. Apple of course, was not happy, and purposefully broke this functionality in subsequent iTunes software updates. Palm responded by complaining to the Forum, but the group took Apple's side.

Now, finally, the Apple/Palm war seems to have ended. With the latest update to Palm Pre's webOS software, the company has come up with a new tactic altogether: forget about iTunes, use Amazon instead.
Palm vs. Apple

The back-and-forth between Apple and Palm was getting ugly. A cat and mouse game transpired involving hacks, crippling updates from Apple, and then re-hacks from Palm which did nothing for either company's image. Some felt that Apple had every right to protect their software from being used with other devices - after all, if something went wrong with Pre syncing, consumers could easily blame Apple's software for the troubles. They may even call in for support, not understanding that Apple wouldn't be able to handle issues arising from the use of a competitor's hardware.

Others, however, felt that Apple should open up. With their dominance over the entire digital media player industry, keeping their proprietary software a closed system was a way to make sure that no up-and-comers could ever have a shot at becoming a popular alternative to the iPod or iPhone. Palm, of course, felt this way, too. They complained to the USB-IF saying that consumers should have a right to decide how they use the media they purchase. That is, if they bought content from iTunes, they should be able to sync it to the Pre.

The USB-IF did not agree, though. They sent letters to both companies explaining that Palm's use of Apple's USB vendor code actually violated the group's rules and would need to end. Clearly, Palm lost this round, too - but don't count them out just yet.
Palm Releases webOS 1.2

Yesterday, Palm released an update of the Pre software, webOS. While most of the reporting surrounding the new OS involved the important update which brings paid applications to the Pre's App Catalog, another under-reported feature is actually just as (if not more) important. The Pre now lets you download over-the-air from Amazon's MP3 Store.

According to the Official Palm Blog, the Amazon integration now works over both WAN or Wi-Fi, meaning that you don't need to be hooked up to a PC via USB to purchase music on your Pre. You can do so directly from the device, just like Apple iPod Touch and iPhone users can do through Apple's mobile iTunes Store. Although the iTunes experience overall may have been the preferable option for many users, Amazon at least provides a viable alternative for Pre owners. Amazon's online catalog may still be a few million short of that of Apple's, but often their prices are much more affordable thanks to daily deals and albums that start at $4.99.

While Palm hasn't officially responded to the USB-IF's letter - despite being told they had to do so within a week - it seems that they have, without actually saying so, made their decision. The latest update's release notes do not mention iTunes syncing, and, as many expected, it has not been re-enabled.

It looks like Palm Pre has given up the fight for good, now betting entirely on Amazon. The company's original plan to sync with iTunes was a calculated risk and one which now leaves consumers holding the short end of the stick. How many Pre owners bought the Pre because it synced with iTunes? How many are angry or disappointed because it doesn't now? It may have been better if Palm never went this route to begin with and worked on making the Amazon integration the key selling point from day one. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20. However, their decision may end up having a major impact on the company's future, considering they've essentially bet the farm on webOS, ending support for devices running both the original Palm OS and Windows Mobile. Will giving up on iTunes impact device sales for the struggling company? Or will extricating themselves from this nasty war with Apple end up being the best thing they could have done?

Last time I tried that tweak, my text messaging app wouldn't open. We'll see what happens this time after the update.

webOS 1.2.1 lands, fixes Exchange and iTunes
webOS-121.jpg

Less than a week after webOS 1.2.0 landed, Palm has started pushing out webOS 1.2.1 to Palm Pre owners nationwide. As rumored, webOS 1.2.1 fixes iTunes sync support, as well as fixing the seriously borked Exchange support that webOS 1.2 brought. The whole update weighs in at 38 MB and is available for download now through the Updates app on your phone. Palm's official (and brief) changelog is posted after the break.

Thanks to everybody that sent this in!

WebOS Quick Install v2.7 with webOS 1.2.1 Support Released
thumb_350_wosqi3.jpg

After almost a week of delays, the much-requested WebOS 1.2.1-compatible release of WebOS Quick Install is finally released. And boy what an update (and I say that completely unbiased *wink*).

This update included a lot of code rewrites and changing the patching system one last time, with the patching system integrated through the program. Just take a look at this change log:

v2.7 - October 4, 09
- Added reset flag support
- Updated Sprint/Bell WebOSDoctor URLs
- Added Patch integration into Device Management
- Fixed issue where uninstalled apps would still appear in Device Management
- Redesigned Tweaks into a tabbed interface
- Completely reimplemented virtual keyboard config support
- Added patch repository support to Tweaks
- Completely redid the internal patcher coding
- Patch format now compatible with Preware
- Greatly improved Ipkg Feed app info window
- Fixed bug affecting custom ipkg feeds
- Added PreYourMind and Canuck Software feeds
- Updated theming to support new patch-compatible format
- Added support for .patch and .diff files in the main screen

So not only are all the old tweaks back, but there's a whole new online patch repository to get more from. Better yet, all applied tweaks/patches are completely interoperable with Preware's patches!

And for those who like crafting their own patches, WebOS Quick Install now support plain .patch and .diff files, without needing any special packing. Quick and easy testing.

So if you just wanna check out what tweaks you can get from v2.7, or you've been one of the many eagerly awaiting this update, feel free to stop on by the WebOS Quick Install forum thread.

Preware gains patching abilities, LED notifications in the mix
thumb_450_notification-light.JPG

Our man jp22382 has pointed out that webOS Internals.org now has its own patches IPKG feed that lets you install webOS patches over the air with minimal fuss, including the LED notifications that Palm didn’t turn on for us in webOS 1.2. To get the patches you’ll have to follow these steps:

* In Preware (installed via webOS Quick Install), select Available Applications and drop down to the IPKG category.
* Select autopatch-feed.
* Click install.
* Close and relaunch Preware.

You’ll now have a new feed in Preware that will provide dozens more patches. Right now not all patches have been updated for compatibility with webOS 1.2, so you should reference webOS Internals’ compatibility table to ensure that what you want to install won’t bork your Pre. You can also see dbSooner's list in our forums as well. Developers are quickly testing and updating patches so that they’ll work with 1.2, and so far most favorites (battery percentage, launcher pages, etc) have already received the 1.2 blessing.

* To install the LED notifications patch, in Preware click on Available Patches, then Screen Lock.
* Select Enables LED Notifications.
* Click install. You’ll have to approve a warning because the patch must run a script to install.

Once you’ve installed the patch, exit Preware and restart your phone - you’ll have to restart the phone every time you want to enable/disable a new patch, though you can install/uninstall multiple patches and restart once to enable/disable them all. To do this, open Device Info (available in Universal Search under ‘reset’), scroll down and click on Reset Options, and then click on Restart. Your phone will turn off and back on.

Once back you’re up and running, open Screen & Lock, scroll down to Notifications and flip “Blink Notifications” from off to on. From here on out, whenever you miss a notification, your phone will blink incessantly but softly until you give it the attention it craves. Sadly, as of yet there is no way to exclude/include apps that can cause the lights to blink, so it’s all or nothing.

Adobe Flash 10.1 Announced and Demo'd on the Pre
We've known since February that the WebOS and Palm Pre would be getting Adobe Flash by the end of 2009. Well, it's October and although we've heard things we still on track, the lack of news certainly did seem a bit troubling... until today.

Today Adobe made their big Flash Player 10.1 announcement, mostly confirming what we already knew:

Adobe Systems Incorporated today unveiled Adobe Flash Player 10.1 software for smartphones, smartbooks, netbooks, PCs and other Internet-connected devices, allowing content created using the Adobe Flash Platform to reach users wherever they are. A public developer beta of the browser-based runtime is expected to be available for Windows® Mobile, Palm® webOS and desktop operating systems including Windows, Macintosh and Linux later this year.

Certainly encouraging talk there; it's nice to see the WebOS mentioned specifically. What's even more interesting is the press release then continues going on, mentioning how Flash 10.1 is able to utilize the GPU for better performance. Whether that means this means the WebOS version will use the GPU is not mentioned, but that'd certainly be a good way to make flash less CPU-intensive.

In addition, Adobe has posted a video demonstration of Flash 10.1 on the Pre. It's definitely worth a watch. Seems to support the WebOS pretty well. We previously heard device orientation and multi-touch is supported, but now we know Flash is integrated to save its state before switching to card view, saving processing power (and thus battery power) and giving an overall better user experience.

Although this demonstration only showed pretty basic examples of flash usage, it's still pretty exiting and could have far reaching future implications. If flash were done successfully, with GPU support, it certainly wouldn't be too difficult to make flash-based WebOS apps.

Also, if you're a developer and want to be notified by email when the public beta of Flash 10.1 is ready for the WebOS, Adobe has set up a form here.

Does anyone know if the problem with space allocated for apps has been resolved? There are a good number of apps available from both the app store & homebrew inventory so it would suck to not be able to install some because of a lack of available space.

The App Space Limit (and What To Do About It)

pre-memory-error.jpg

With more than 100 apps now available for download from the webOS App Catalog and some 200 odd apps from the PreCentral Homebrew Gallery, more and more Pre users are running into a frustrating error: Sorry, Not Enough Memory. “What do you mean, not enough memory?” you promptly asked the phone. “You have 8 GB of storage, I have 50 apps. This doesn't add up.”

You're right, it doesn't add up. There has been a lot of confusion about how this is limited and we’re going to do our best to explain the situation. First off, there is no numerical limit on how many apps you can install, so don’t fret that you’ve hit some magical barrier. The problem comes with how Palm decided to protect applications from copying by end users, and that was to put them in a hidden partition that doesn’t show when you mount the Pre as a USB drive on your computer. The problem with partitions is that they are a set size and difficult to resize, which means that once Palm set the size of the partitions on the Pre, those were the partitions we were stuck with.

We'll take a closer look at the limit and also explain what needs to be done to fix it (hint: you can try to hack it, but what we need is a fix from Palm)

VuiVision brings streaming live TV to Pre

So lets say you really want to watch The Office when it airs, but you can’t get to a TV because you’re on the bus. Set your DVR and watch it when you get home, right? Well, you could do that, or you could watch it right now. VuiVision.com, which is currently in public alpha testing, offers streaming live television over the invisible tubes that connect your phone to the internet. And by streaming live television, we mean you can get the currently broadcasting shows from NBC, CBS, and ABC. Amusingly, the streaming works fine on the Pre but doesn’t work on the iPhone. As this is alpha stage testing, it’s not exactly perfect (for example, for a while I was getting NBC when I tried to watch CBS), but it is free and live TV. On your phone. Cool, eh?

What new stuff is out there for the pre?

I havent done shit to my pre yet. I dl that "drop file here to install" program but I am afraid to use it in fear of it messing up my tether. I could reinstall my tether easily but dont feel like it. What apps are out there that are worth risking a download for. My tether is the best app out right now. Anything out there that even comes close?

Is there away to erase these bullshit apps like nascar?

Is there away to make the phone answer by sliding open the phone?
