You have to read DC (especially the silver age) with suspension of disbelief. They were geared mostly towards kids. While Marvel tried to do more mature (believable) stories.

Okay that cleared some things up about Prime I didn't get. But really

they had to tone his ass down. no one could get at him at that level.

Every time someone brings up Superman. They really need to bring up which era/writer.
The best Superman...meaning the one which people can relate to IMO is:
Superman: Secret Identity
This book shows the original intention of his character. To do what no man can and to do so out of the goodness of his heart. He has limits in this book...things he can not do, things he won't do and things he never thought about doing.
BTW - For those of you that like Superman-Prime - This is a "What if" about him.
