A letter from Ronald Reagan to Michael Jackson, dated February 1, 1984, five days after the singer’s hair was set afire by pyrotechnics during the filming of a Pepsi commercial. The letter was among belongings Jackson offered for sale at auction in April in an attempt to pay off an estimated $24 million in debts, including legal fees incurred during his trial for child molestation. Michael Jackson was at his very peak in 1984. A historically unrivaled popularity. A president would be foolish not to jump on that bandwagon.

2009 is a very different story in terms of Jackson's status in the world's view. He was hated/ridiculed as much as (if not more than) loved right before his death. All this '70s and '80s nostalgia and sympathy doesn't totally wash away the last 15-25 years in the president's or the public's mind.

Two days after his death there are a lot of people who are already tired of the 24/7 coverage and continuous tributes.
I look forward to watching the BET Awards show to see the various tributes and expressions of love and appreciation.
It is entirely possible to be a fan of MJ's music and talent and not be totally bent out of shape about his passing. :cool: But anyone who doesn't swing on Mike's nut sack will be the odd one out. :(
