A Shreveport man, seeking to avenge someone beating up his little brother, fired into a group of teenagers riding bikes, missing the intended target but killing another young man, the Caddo Parish grand jury has charged.
Murder victim Isaih Ellis, 17, had nothing to do with breaking the little brother's jaw, prosecutors said.
Tamontrell Thornton, 19, of Shreveport, was indicted for first-degree murder. The grand jury concluded the most serious charge applied because shots were fired at several people.
Caddo prosecutors said Thornton's younger brother had his jaw broken March 3 during a fight he started. He told his older brother, who went to retaliate for what happened, found the teen who hurt his brother in a group of four bicycle riders on West Canal Boulevard and started shooting, Assistant District Attorney Ed Blewer said.
Ellis was shot in the back. The intended target was not hit, Blewer said.
Thornton is held at Caddo Correctional Center under $150,000 bond. Arraignment is scheduled for May 22 in Caddo District Court.
