question for UFC fans - NOT mma in general, only UFC

I give matchmaker Joe Silva props for creating some interesting match-ups though ... the card for UFC FIGHT NIGHT (Saturday, February 7th, 2009 on SPIKE) looks pretty solid too.

Yeah, but Bob Sapp has NO skills.

i acknowledged that. i typed "lack of merit" aside.

but it still has great appeal to fans (and non-fans alike). most recently, there was that match between fedor and that korean dude (7'2" 350 lbs.). it's a huge draw.

really?

this is probably where my lack of knowledge about UFC leaves me at a disadvantage in these discussions.

i don't watch any of those UFC reality shows, so i don't know any of the "up and coming" fighters.

but i was reviewing the PRIDE and UFC DVDs on netflix and A LOT of the UFC DVDs don't have even ONE match i'm interested in watching.

:(

That match was in Japan. Bob Sapp is huge in Japan. Marketing in Japan isn't gonna transfer here that well.
MMA fans in the US wont buy into a guy light on skill unless he has some badass persona aka Kimbo

--

On the issue of matchups - the UFC is pretty much cherry picking the best athletes from the other organizations so future dvds you see might have names you recognize and want to watch

Hong Man Choi and Fedor's PPV didn't do so well. The only way you can do David vs Goliath matches is if the Goliath has considerably less skill that the David.

Find a way to download UFC 91 and 92, probably the best Back to Back cards the UFC has ever done. Great fights all around, no bullshit.

Try to watch tomorrow. As BJ takes on GSP. I won't be laying down any money on that card until I see the weighins. If BJ still has his cutness, I'm going with him. If he looks flabby, I'm going with GSP.

sokoudjou is one dimensional. but he has great power. so is Houston Alexander. (remember how everyone was on Keith Jardine's nuts and houston annihlated him?) fighters today, MUST remember one fact. this is mma. MIXED martial arts. if you fail to mix up your defense and offense, you will be lost out there in the ring or octogan. look at the two guys i mentioned. they are one dimensional. and i love houston. look at chuck, "i can't hold a proper boxing stance" liddell. i dont think i've even seen him throw a kick before thats even landed properly. and yet people keep rooting for him and hoping he wins.

if you call yourself a fighter then you wouldnt dare limit yourself to just one discipline. look at GSP. this is a guy who didn't even HAVE wrestling until he started mma. now he dominates the wrestlers with collegiate backgrounds. he can strike, submit etc. he is a complete fighter. i still think matt hughes is one of the most complete. this new kid jon jones. (did ya'll see him?????) he has potential to be unstoppable. (needs to work his cardio first though) and of course, the best in the world, fedor emelenianenko. that manhas defeated everyone put in front of him.

That last UFC Fight Night was entertaining as hell for a free card. Especially the Danzig/Neer fight. The main event was pretty good to.

Thats the thing about UFC, even if there aren't headliners fighting the cards are usually still entertaining as hell. That is why MMA is kicking boxings ass, but thats for another thread.

But I cosign teribel, guys are starting to be much much more well rounded as before. I think alot of the reason is b/c they sport is growing and guys are able to practice these diciplines in the US, and not just getting training but TOP NOTCH training here in the US. Of course some guys still go overseas to train with elite camps i.e. BJJ camps in brazil.

But if you just like the standup and just train that facet of the game, you better have some great ass takedown defense to make sure things stay on the feet, like Chuck Liddell.

very true. nowadays everyone is getting well trained and you can't just expect to throw some hands and rely on take down defense. hahaha. you see how well chuck is doin these days. lol when he fights shogun he's gonna get owned. providing rua has had enough time to get back to the old PRIDE version of himself. because the way he fought against Coleman was jaw dropping. that was not shogun. If Liddell fights the old Shogun, he better just think bout becoming a trainer.
